You crack me up! Totally wish you lived closer! I think we would be great friends! Here’s the thing. I can save you a lot of fuss and headache. I went plant crazy and have now over 300 plants lol. I started with soil. Had fungus gnats like crazy. Lots of time energy and money and headaches and all the things later I’m now doing mostly semi hydro. Look into it. Your collection is just beginning and this is the one thing I would have done over if I could have. So many less bugs. No soil. Less bugs for sure. Way easier. Promise you. If you choose to stick with soil there are ways to avoid the gnats but since most soils from the shoppes have them it’s always a battle. As for the Alocasia What your found was a corm. It’s essentially a good thing as that corm is a baby plant. Look into how to sprout corms. Super fun! Super rewarding! Alocasia are fussy. They don’t like to dry out to the bone but they don’t like “wet feet” this is when the soil remains too damp. This happens when the soil is too dense and doesn’t have proper drainage. This can be avoided by adding amendments to your soil such as perlite. Your alocasia will throw a fit and drop leaves when she is unhappy. There tricky to figure out. I could never keep them happy before I switched to semi hydro. I really think you should look into it. Check out the brand soil ninja and look for their semi hydro. Buy a bag. Repot all that stuff. And live a much less stressful life! Sorry for the long response I wanted to answer some of your concerns and it turned into a novel!

I would buy a bag of perlite. Any garden store will have it. Amazon too. Mix the perlite into your soil. This helps with aeration. You MUST make your soil airy. You can experience a lot of root rot issues if you don’t. Otherwise great job! You can also just plant your baby and then water him. It isn’t necessary to drench the soil first. Just water well after. Great job! Nice little roots! It’s exciting!

im rooting many plants right now to save money on annuals next year. currently my main interest ins a Kalanchoe “flapjack” pup i am rooting in water. i just threw it in soil at first but it was not doing well so i put it in water and it’s rooting nicely and perked up
