Best video on oiling out on RUclips. Can’t believe it doesn’t have more views!!!
Thank you! 🙏🏼
The pastel colored pencil set I have does not seem to lay over the Sennelier soft pastels very well. What brand are you using for the finer details?
JFC, I admire your mindset to be able to paint the same subject over and over and over again, I would go insane.
Very helpful video. Is there a pastel set that you would recommend for figure drawing?
A Sennelier portrait set works great, and thank you!
@@marctrujillo711 Thank you!
great video. thanks!
You're welcome! Glad you liked it!
I'm shocked at how little of views and likes this vid and others of yours has. this is priceless info and great explanation. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much!
We truly only visual measure, in landscape I assure you
Are you referring to you and Rembrandt as ‘we’. Or to all of us as humans in the landscape or something else?
Very valuable info, thank you for sharing! Is the Winton and Le Franc a cobalt blue hue? Because I don't think they have real cobalt in those lines. I have Talens Van Gogh genuine coblalt blue and was please to see that it performed not that badly, given that it is very affordable.
I checked the labels and all of these said they were Pb 28, Cobalt Blue, but I think a few are not. Steve Sheehan, who I took a materials class from would go and look at the paint under an electron microscope to see if they were cobalt molecules, but I don't have one of those! And, thank you!
@@marctrujillo711 I probably wouldn't be able to tell it it had the real cobalt pigment in it or not, like I am sure great artists can. I would like an electron microscope, I just don't know where I would put it 😊
@@pjjmsn Right? It would be fun to look at all kinds of things with it! I wouldn't be able to recognize a cobaly molecule under on right now, anyway.
The lighting is so beautifully done. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you- I love this painting!
Hi Marc! Thank you for posting this video. I'm struggling to articulate how helpful your insights and expertise are - not just in this video but in every video on your channel. Thank you for your generosity of sharing your knowledge. Tremendously awesome! Thank you!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you find them helpful!
Maimeri Puro?
Top row second from left at the start of the video. One of the first ones I tested. A little slippery, but good stuff.
@@marctrujillo711 was just clarifying that the swatch was the Puro line and not the Artisti line. The Artisti line is also great. Quite affordable here where I live and it’s comes in 60mls!
My bad for not labeling it completely- I haven’t tested the other line.
@@marctrujillo711 no worries ❤️.
Honestly, I'm surprised at how well the cheaper brands did. I don't think I'd be disappointed in M. Graham, Gamblin, Lukas, or Utrecht (as an example). Charvin is a bit disappointing - do you know if this was their "fine" or "extra fine" oils?
Right? I made this chart for my students so they would have a good index of overall brand quality and was also pleased at how some of the other ones did. You do notice a difference in the very top tier, but happy to see you can get decent paint at an affordable price. on the chart I made for the whites I was surprised at how some of the cheaper brands did as well
@@marctrujillo711 Sometimes I feel a 80-90% of the price is branding, haha! Everyone knows Old Holland and they can demand Old Holland prices, you know?
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Love his landscapes.
Me too! This landscape painting of his literally changed my life
@@marctrujillo711 for me Rembrandts landscapes are the best.
Me too!
Is it OK to put an oil painting done on a high quality oil paper into a plein air frame (with no glass)? Hope to hear from you. Thanks for the video.
It is- I've mounted paintings on paper onto gaterboard and framed them like they were painted on panel and it works great
Most people do not understand this ,!!
It takes some work to understand!
You deserve more comments!
Thank you! I appreciate it!
I'm wondering why you didn't sample: Daler-Rowney (Artist's and Georgian), Langridge, Shin-Han, Isaru or Jackson's?
This was an expensive chart to make, my school helped me by finding part of it and I have continued to add other brands afterwards. There are more brands on the chart now, but they don't include any of the ones that you are asking about now that I've shown you how to do it, you can make your own and include those brands and let me know the results you get compared to some of the default high-quality brands like Old Holland.
@@marctrujillo711 My comment was in no way a criticism. I became hooked on Old Holland as soon as I discovered them, they are a non pareil among oil paints. It's just that I've never heard of Norma, Permalba, Grumbacher, Richeson Shiva, Le Franc, Soho, RGH, Vasari, Vernet, ART Spectrum or Blue Ridge. Daler-Rowney paints are widespread, of excellent quality, and I unequivocally recommend them.
I would put the Daler -Rowney on the chart- I've actually added some since I've uploaded this, but RUclips won't let me update or post a photo to include them. I tested all the brands that were readily available to me and also tested some that students and friends had and traded them Old Holland for whatever they gave me in exchange.@@alangeorgebarstow
I love your art so much!!!
Thank you so much! Cheers!
Would you recommend this palette for painting portraits? Great and insightful video!!
I got this palette from Delacroix, but Sargent used it as well, probably not for a full on finished portrait, but for studies.
i actually came to this video hoping to get tips how to recycle lab solvents lol
That sounds like a good video- now I'm curious as well!
@@marctrujillo711 i have been collecting my solvents over the years and seperating them, now im stuck with distilling about 30L and purifying them hehe, mostly ethanol tho
Thanks for sharing. I too adore this work of the Master, just one of many. Well done for having a go and you have inspired me!
Thank you- this painting is inspiring for sure- glad I could help!
Thanks for putting together such a helpful demo!
Why, thank you and glad you liked it!
Gorgous. Will definitely be trying this for my figure drawing class!
Great, thanks!
Thank you!
That was totally awesome it will force me through learning your technique 2 do!
Thank you!
Hello❤❤ how can I check proportions?
Measuring is worth taking up as a separate issue, basically, you need a frame of reference- head height is a pretty standard unit of measure to use to check the rest of the figure-ruclips.net/video/I3DQ76uwTXk/видео.html
This is a very good tip Tanks fot this. Love from Holland.
Thank you- I love Holland! Glad to help.
What is the ratio of gamsol to gamvar when the painting is only a week to a month old? How much do you dilute it?
I dilute it about 20%- that's what Gamblin said to do- it spreads the varnish molecules further apart and allows the painting to continue to dry while giving it a gloss.
I'm an artist and I've worked with pastels and I got to say 8 minutes in I'm impressed
Thank you!
I had no idea you could oil paint on gesso'd watercolor paper!
It works well!
Very interesting and well explained, I really enjoyed the explanation about the colors and their temperature. Good tips from an experienced artist. Thank you artist.
Thank you!
How many gsm paper you use for painting ?
It’s either 120 or 200 pound hot press.
who is Richer? is he the best artist for anatomy?
He was a French Academy artist- probably the best but he can be dry sometimes. You actually have a band of Richer that goes over your quadriceps - which is impressive that he got a part of the body named after him.
Flake White will darken out of sunlight. Did you put your whites board in the sun?
I did, a number of colors darken, as well as linseed oil. So I have periodically put both the white and blue charts in the sun. Thanks!
An extraordinarily useful video! This channel is a rare treasure
Thank you!
Great channel... really underrated
Thank you!
What is that earthy orange? Mars....???
It is Mars Orange- good eye!
Didn’t try Robert Doak?
RGH made Doak's paint for a while, although I'm sure Doak wouldn't admit it. They are about the same- good quality and pretty affordable.
You never tried Pebeo?
I can only get the XL paint, and they only have a "Cobalt Blue Imitation", so the comparison wouldn't be the same. Do they make a pure Cobalt with PB28?
Yay
What is the painted surface you are drawing over please? Looks like gouache.
Hello Sylak- the ground is acrylic- here's what it is exatly- ruclips.net/video/U5iJ6HV_h-E/видео.html
Just superb !
Many thanks!
Even though mixing the paint with some Zinc white is always a good indicator, the more vivid difference in the pigment volume would be to mix the same amount of paint with some neutral filler, like aluminum oxide. This is when you really see the difference. Also, many cheap brands use hues, which won’t show in your test. I can actually see Winton on your table looks decent, which in reality is not true. Besides the pigmentation, you should also consider lightfastness. It would also be a very good indication of the quality of paint if you’d make some mixes with reds and yellows. PY35 is a very obvious choice for your comparison.
I mixed with Titanium Zinc white. Winton is like melted crayons in a tube, you're right. I checked that every Cobalt Blue was labeled with PB28, although there is some variety within that and also some manufacturers are not honest about what is in the paint. Your other tests sound interesting, have you tried them? I'd be interested to see how they came out.
Thanks
Excelent , thanks
You are welcome!
FANTASTIC info. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you!
You have finally not given your preference. Which paint to buy?
For Cobalt Blue, I use Old Holland or Michael Harding.
what about getting 2 jars a 1 tube between them and you have say ether boils at like 30c with extract and other jar collection jar u put it in greenhouse and wait for the collection jar to fill and the jar with extract leaves behind whatever was dissolved and your recycled cleaned ether is now in other jar seperated from both will this work and it would be cleaner as its had chance to evaporate and no solids can be passed through staying the jar
I would not want to try and boil a solvent since they are flammable!
i meant with an electric hot plate obviously not gas with low boiling point solvents just boil a kettle and use the hot water to speed it up or let it slowly evaporate in a greenhouse it's just a good another good way to recycle solvents but more like for extracting certain stuff with a non polar and recycling it and the solids will stay in bottle 1 so u can do this alot for very cheap it's like a seawater extraction the solids(including minerals which is bad but good for no impurties) will be left in bottle 1 and deionized water in 2
@@marctrujillo711 if you would take a bottle and put tube and put in ur greenhouse all of the paint will be removed and you will have the clean solvent in the other bottle but you need a cold water bucket to condense it and stop this liquid evaporating and going back through like u could make a set up where it's somewhere hot and u got a hose that feeds through into a solvent storage bottle somewhere nice and cool with water this is bio distilling just slowly make the holes for the lids of the bottle until tube fits perfectly and cover with any good glue like jb weld and push the tube further in so the glue seals it good and it needs no electric u will get very clean solvent back but if letting the layers seperate works do and make sure u don't lose any to evaporation with lid as much as possible but if you struggle to get all of ur solvent back bio distilling might be better especially living in a hot country take and advantage and keep Recycling! love ur paintings tho amazing
@@DRAMAALERTNATION-gg9dc That makes sense, and thank you! Have you tried this to recycle solvents?
@@marctrujillo711 No im planning to recycle petroleum ether which boils at low tempature it's very flammable and searching for bio ways using sunlight outside i think it would work great for you to get good seal on 2 bottle so no air can escape let the glue set or epoxy even better then make sure ur seals are good and add ur recycling solvent and put that other bottle in some water to lower the tempature and wrap alumnium foil around the top of bottle number 1 but allow space for sunlight at the bottom where the solvent is or i am even planning to make a foil box to put around and keep all of that heat inside hoping petroleum ether will not take long at all as the such low boilng tempature but your could take a while so do that seperating thing and throw the gunk u can't seperate in it because that solvent probably has a boiling point similar to ethanol
This is so incredibly helpful! Thank you :)
Glad to hear it and thank you!
Very useful information! Can I ask you a question? Surely you have a lot of experience, please advise the paint that can be used directly from the tube, with minimal mixing with mediums. That is, the paint is as similar in consistency as possible to Daler Georgian. It suits me best. It reminds me of a cream that doesn't run off the canvas and can easily be mixed with a stiff brush. it can also be compared to shaving foam, but still denser. Maimeri Classico I find too oily and quite dense and thick. It is also desirable that the paint has a shine after drying. What other paints have a consistency similar to Georgian?
Sennelier is designed to be used from the tube without medium, but I haven't found the quality to be as good in their oil paints as it is in their pastels. Even though I have experience with different paints my own preference is for a thicker paint that's very strong like Old Holland. I like it for travel and for plein-air, since the stiffness of the pain keeps it from sliding around on the pallet if it's in a backpack. I mostly use that, Michael Harding and Blockx, Blockx is a lighter viscosity paint as well and you might like to try it. Schmincke Mussini is designed to stay glossy when dry, you might like that as well, although it may be thicker than you like.
@@marctrujillo711 Thank you for your answer. What is your opinion about Lefranc and Maimeri puro ? And do you have any favorite colors that are definitely better from this particular manufacturer (although this question is probably already from the field of professional secrets).
