Being a Crip is easy to understand when you think about the place they originally came from. Los Angeles back in the Crack Epidemic in the 1980's and 1990's was a very dangerous place to live, and many of the young people were from single mother families and who didn't know their fathers and had little discipline and encouragement and positive role models. The schools failed them and the police were the enemy and they were stereotyped by the rest of society as dangerous predators or lazy and unwilling to work so they had few ambitions and they knew that they could easily end up murdered, paralyzed and in a wheelchair, in prison for decades or being poor for the rest of their lives. Joining the Crips made sense and you had loyalty and friendship with people who were from the same background as you and who you trusted in return, they helped you make money selling drugs and helped from being victimized by the other gangs and the police and a lot of real Crips treat their fellow gang members as surrogate family members and work colleagues. But having white Crips from middle class suburbs and Crips in Canada, Florida, South Carolina and Maine, miles from where they originated from is fake. Living in South Central LA back in 1985 was like being in a war zone, having to watch out for Bloods, Hispanic gangs, the police who would easily kill you, so it made sense to be a gang member that could sell drugs and protect their own areas. But just wanting to be a Crip so you can use the hand signs and learn how to Crip walk and live your life as a being a gang member when you have no reason to be part of a gang is pointless. If the police are unlikely to kill you, and if you don't have a mother on crack and family doing life in prison for murder, and if you don't have to worry about going to the wrong area or being shot in a drive by shooting, then you can never understand why the gang became so important to its members. You can wear blue or whatever and listen to any music you want to, but you will never be able to see what being in a gang in a hostile and dangerous place, living in a hood where people die regularly and you will never be considered to be a genuine Crip by the real ones.
