If you’re a bigger fella like me, it’s nearly impossible to find an original issue M-65 in any size larger than L. I wear an XXL, and they’re impossible to find, so I’m forced to buy a reproduction like a Rothco. Re: the Rothco hood, it’s worthless, I just cut it out. Collar fits much better now, no lumpy collar.

There is a more rarer model that is a navy blue, though I think they are model N-4A and were a earlier model; these are N-4B models. Some soldiers would modify their mittens on their Air Force fliers with a little cutaway on the right hand glove so that pilots could slip their fingers out of the palm of the mitt in order to grab onto the joystick of the plane/helicopter for better control or to have more dexterity in general. Those particular models had olive green wool for the liners rather than the Nylon or white wool liners. The earlier models had the AirForce logo on the sleeve of the mittens.

I know that I’m a little late but I never found what gloves the flap on the cuff attached to. I had searched forever and thought that it would attach with the m65 mittens but idk. Guess they removed it later because it wasn’t useful. I hate it on my m65s because it’s chunky and doesn’t fold into the cuff right.

My Tiger stripe Rothco has the ECW hood attatchmentpoints . I put an OD ECW hood on mine .

When you ran only a slimmiser in the front, did people.move out the way or was it troublesome where ppl wouldn't yield?

Hay, A.B., thanks for the extreme weather M65 field jacket hood demonstration. I actually had a lot of questions about that hood after I found out that there was a warm hood that could be attached. I have the jacket, now Ill be searching for the hood. But, yeah, thanks, bro. You did a good job. The next step is up to me. I live where there is extreme winter weather at times so I’ll be looking for that hood. Om!

Back in the day these were used with M 65 pants. The long John bottoms had loops as well. You'd hook through the loops on pants AND underwear to keep everything up. Used with rain pants as well. The best part is dropping trou with ALICE gear on. Just unhook and do your biz. With all the female military nowadays, why are these not a thing? The modern types seem too heavy and bulky compared to these.

You got the rothco hood wrong :) You have to turn the rear flap and button in from the outside, by that keeping water and snow out of the collar opening

Great review. For anybody who wants that leather to last much, much longer treat it with Sno-seal wax. Rub it it, heat it with a hair dryer/heat gun, repeat every year or 2. It soaks in, will darken the leather, and will add water resistance.

The military-issue M65s outer shell was made of "Nyco", 50% nylon and %50 cotton. It s not waterproof, but is somewhat water repellant. Most reproduction M65s are made of %50 cotton and %50 polyester.

We called it a "dummy cord". Before the cord was included, we used to pull the elastic cord out of our field jackets, tie one end to a mitten, run it into the sleeve, through the jacket, then out of the other sleeve to be tied to the second mitten. I like the included harness idea they've come up with. One last thing, the mittens have another tab that the cord can be tied to instead. This allows the mittens to hang horizontally when you're not wearing them, which keeps precipitation from falling into them. Great review video!

Rothco's are made to military specifications because they are not made in the US anymore, because the military doesn't issue them any longer. New Rothco jackets come with a liner, Most used ones don't have the liner. The M-65 I was issued had the same heavy duty brass zipper.

the bottom of the m65 being not attached was to insert extra insulation even papers etc

One caution about those elastic cords: If they slip back into the channels, you are going to have one tough time fishing them back out. BE SURE to tie a large knot in the ends!

Good overview! As long as one does not expect a Rothco copy to be as good as a USGI item, there's not really a problem. I have one of each, and my olive drab Rothco is one of my go-to work coats, and it does its job well. Also, being much cheaper, wear and damage is not an issue.

My m43 is a little different does not say Japan as America wouldn't use a shovel made by the people there at war with maybe he switched with a dead jap

Everyone gets it wrong about the collar strap.. it's not to keep u warmer, it was designed to snug it up so u don't get hot brass down ur shirt. Just saying
