Caulston Farm Devon
This week I visit Adam and Holly at Caulston Farm, right on the coast in South Devon. Around 1000 acres milking 550 to 600 cows in an organic system, using herbal leys, all young stock on farm.
They are a new AHDB Strategic Dairy Farm, I'm doing this initial visit to give recommendations and will be part of a later AHDB SDF open day on the farm.

I caught up with Kevin and Jim who are milking 520 cows on 210 hectares in South Wexford, a couple of driven, hardworking guys who like a laugh. On camera Kevin does most of the talking but they are very much working together to get the farm performing to potential whilst analysing opportunity to cut back on chemical N use, improve soil health and look at using more variety in reseeds.

Where in nz are you coming to ?
@@davidquigley3000 Wairarapa/Hawkes Bay👍
@ haha all good was hoping you be down Canterbury way !
Would you recommend any podcasts? Particularly in the area of grass/fertiliser/ soil or even foliar fertiliser. Thanks
@@mosscr I've got a lot from Graeme Sait's Nutrition Farming series 👍
With the hen dung how is that incorporated? Any risk of botulism?
@DylanFarrell-t3j chicken manure is spread directly, I questioned the botulism too but seems to be near nil risk
@ thanks André really enjoying the channel
@@GraiseConsultancywon’t be as big a risk from laying hens as broilers.
Very interesting video.do you work with any once a day farmers in ireland.interesting video to do as alot of farmers on the fence because of no milkers
@markredmond987 thanks, yes I've done a lot with OAD over the years and milked OAD and 3 in 2 myself
I did 10 and 7 last year.but am thinking of oad this spring and maybe full time.finding it impossible to get time off and with young family and no relief milker...have talked to a cuple of oad farmers.where would u advice me to turn to next ss too make the big step.

Interesting video, so is he running 2 parlours now in 2 driffrent parts of the farm now? Keep up the good work .
@paulfinnan1984 yes that's it, split the farm, 2 parlours and both with no long walks on the main season milking platform
Great discussion, would like to hear more about oad targets, breeding etc. keep up the good work
The history of farming in the western world is ever bigger farms, fewer of them, fewer children locally, little or no community activities. CB radios came from this background in the Usa and on the scale up madness goes.
@michaeloconnor9809 quite the opposite actually, whereas until now this farm has employed only one person, it will now employ at least 4, dairy conversion has a massively positive impact on rural communities both socially and economically and this is grass fed, quality food being produced
Nice video. Hell of a farm. Be interested to see would you do a video on protected urea. A lot of grumbling over it's use and potential downsides. Thanks
@daireharlin181 yes I will be, probably in January
@GraiseConsultancy great thanks
Great videos, keep up the educational stuff as well 👍
@paulfinnan1984 thanks, definitely will do
Have been foliar spraying dissolved urea with humates here for several years. It is by far the most NUE of any form of nitrogen application and it is amazing how the soil structure improoves.
Excellent video. Be interesting to see part 2 and what you think going into grazing next year
Great video. I was hoping you ask the lads about no clear sheets on the roofs.
Carbon footprint is an individual blame game, a load of bollocks can’t understand why you still swallow it. I’ll let you into a secret it’s all tied onto agenda 20/30 which I’m sure you’ve heard about. You know the secret meetings your government has in Davos every year with the WEF which the media keep very quiet about? Well they’re planning on getting rid of farms using the climate farce, wake up and smell the roses FFS.
Great video Guys
Well done lads
Great video. Interesting set up.
No need to cringe at other grasses. If you pick the right varieties, you’ll take the mixed species leys to another level. I have cocksfoot and tall fescue in my mixtures, out growing PRG and cows still doing 1.4kg MS late lactation. The grasses and legumes are the bread and butter, the herbs are useful but peripheral. Yarrow is a useful addition as it will be invisible some years then produce well in a dry year.
@@cuddersop thanks, it'd be interesting to see "cardboard grasses" working, I have only had and seen negative experiences
In the dry east of England, birdsfoot trefoil is one of my most persistent components because drought checks its competition. I was surprised to see it growing well on the Mullet when I visited Ireland. Growing on the dunes and verges however.
Hey Graise, do you advise to use the aerator in this kind of environment? To help infiltrate more water
@xMarf yes in some situations, usually dig a few holes and decide what's the best solution, sometimes proper drainage, sometimes deep aerator, sometimes a spike roller
Peter is one sound man
Good job Andre, looking forward to more videos 👍
Great . Your articles are always very interesting
Brilliant Andre looking forward to the videos 👏
Well done Andre looking forward to watching
