They had such beautiful stores ! In the 60's at Christmastime the streets looked like the Christmas scene in the movie "It's A Wonderful Life". Who remembers the Texas Weener hot dog place ? or the giant Lobster outside the Plainfield fish market ? And there was a movie theater, and a Woolworths (?) How about The Mt. Carmel Guild, the Salvation Army store, The Y.M.C.A., Brooks Record Store ? My parents bought furniture at the Thomas Furniture store, was it Miron's at one time ? The Queen City was so beautiful in it's hey day as was most of our N.J. cities. Sad what has happened. Thank You for these wonderful old pictures, I wish I had the fortitude to capture my memories from back then. I guess we always believe that these things will always be here.

Plainfield Freedom doesn’t sound so bad at 150% of speed. I too was impressed by the quality of the images. Wonder what their hopes for themselves and Plainfield would be in fifty years. Going from north to south for work for a few years, I wish there was a highway in the eighties. A highway thru the city would have destroyed this city. I would hope for better development next to to the trainline to NYC. I haven’t read about it if it happened.

I grew up in North Plainfield, lived on Mountain Ave. In the 1950's all of us kids, would go to Netherwood Brook, in the winter, and go ice skating. I went to East End Elementary and then North Plainfield High School and graduated there in 1966. Such wonderful memories. This brought back such good memories. Haven't been back in decades. Thank you .

And to all the other cities that suffer that same incidents that summer in 67 . It's time to move forward . And create our own great plainfield again .

Yes, that was horrific ( the riot). I was 14 years old, my father worked for PSE&G in Plainfield during those turbulent times,he was lucky to come home to us safely. As a young girl(16) I was shopping in town, and a group of " Hippie " type teens gathered to clean a nearby brook area, and recruited me and my friend to help, I had just bought a Fife at the local music store and a girl was teaching me to play it while we were cleaning. Those were the days....
