Kodamo EssenceFM: Modal Argon8 - FM using bitreduced sines

The Argon8 is in the left channel, the EssenceFM is in the right channel. I had some difficulty matching envelopes on this one.
Kodamo EssenceFM: Waldorf Kyra - FM using Adventure Kid waveforms

The Kyra is in the left channel, the EssenceFM is in the right channel. I had to more than halve the maximum modulation in the EssenceFM to reduce it to the leve of the maximum modulation in the Kyra.

Patching on the Kodamo Mask1 Bitmask Synthesizer: three patches from init #kodamo #synth

Another half an hour, three patches from scratch: I try out some looping oscillator envelopes, filter envelope, LFO pitch modulation, scan through some masks, play with the looper and the arpeggiator and generally have a good time. At one point I get up into the higher masks, which get a bit trickier to use.

Do you have the efm going into the sync in on the A8? How are they connected. Interesting bass sweep
They're both being sequenced by the MPC, a single low c. The Argon8's (limited) FM engine is one of the few I've found that can come close to the EFM for bite.
two of my favourite synths. Great combo
Digging into the FM on the Kyra for the first time here. It's a little less intuitive and powerful than the essencefm, but there is some good stuff in there for sure. I made a long post on GS 😅
Awesome stuff man!
Glad you liked it!
Wow.... That's great!!!
Thanks a lot!
top work man! edit: next on my list is the essence fm! recently acquired opsix module and digitone 2
@cvio_ cheers! I love FM, would like to try the opsix and digitone sometime. It's hard to beat the multitimbral power of the EssenceFM though!
I have the three of them plus the king of fm yamaha montage m8x
@pedrogomis sounds like you think the montage is the best then?
@@jbowmanmusic 8 operators m8x, 6 operators kodamo, 5 operators opsix
I see underrated artists almost everyday Guess you're one of them Pretty nice trance song That background tho
Awesome tune man. I dig it 👍 😀
One of the coolest features of this synth 😎 i should do this more
It's a good way to get things going quickly. It would be great if you could pan individual voices, which would enable you to record a stereo mix in one take.
Love these crisp beefy bass lines !! Visuals definitely add to the game vibe.
Fun, hypnotic stuff🍌
great sound!
@cvio_ thanks for listening!
nice and funky
@@cvio_ cheers!
❤ using the looping ✉ s on 🎭 🏆 Cool video. Wishing one day for adsr amount adjustments with lfo mw at or vel for a future update. Even w/o that its super fun with the looping 🎭 🔼 ✉s also. Your filter reso at 5 min sounded like tweeting 🐦 pretty neat!
Great suggestion! Thanks for listening.
Superb, you are making me want the Mask1 again...
Thanks for listening. It's a great synth!
Great synth and demo. Thx
Thanks - it is a great synth!
more of these! i love em
thanks for the positive feedback
Hi, I have a question: does the Mask 1 sequencer can be synchronized to an External MIDI clock signal received? Let me know, if you can. Thank you very much
I think the answer is no - the Mask1 looper literally just loops, so wherever you set the endpoint determines the loop length and it just repeats...
you use some noise or you play just with modulation of the mask? (audio rate? )
I'm using noise in some of them, from memory I think the first patch is just mask Modulation though
@@jbowmanmusic Ok
Good comparison, I will keep my Mask 1
@@pedrogomis It's a great synth!
The Mask1 there always seems to be some sort of weird phaser-effect present, where the Prologue displays a certain fat- and fullness. Prologue just sound more interesting to me. Thouh I have to say, I kind of dig the slick look of the Mask.
They both look great to me. Interesting you pick up on the phasing with the Mask1 - this is because the oscillators seem to have an inherent pitch instability in them, which means every 2 Osc patch inevitably has a kind of "analogue" phasing built-in. I have requested an update where you would have the option for the oscillators to play absolutely true with no pitch variation. Interestingly the oscillators in the "truly analogue" Prologue (once they have warmed up) are more stable in terms of pitch. The Mask1 does sound cleaner and more hi fi than the Prologue to me.
You can do the same in serum and its msegs
@jensschettler1732 yeah, maybe it's unusual for analogue / VA synths but I guess there are probably quite a few digital synths which can generate these kind of waves
U went different directions recently, loved the Lyra stuff but this is also very good
Lol, thank you. I need to get back in touch with the Lyra 8. Have also been thinking about the Pulsar...
@@jbowmanmusic all my friends who bought pulsar are extremely happy about it, I’m not biggest fan of this cables but the sounds and freedom of this system is amazing
Ooooh, new sounds!
@@JazzPaladin Thanks for listening!
funky elektro track...nice work.....
Thanks for listening!
The mask1 has such a lovely rich and full sound with va sounds, it honestly blows my mind. Then you can change the masks around and really dial in more kind of sounds! Awesome composition
yes I've been spending hours with the Mask1 everyday for the past couple of weeks and it is amazing how much there is in here! Thanks for listening.
woooo !! awesome -
@@HarmonicSonics. Thanks!
This is lovely all around 🍌
@@3SpeedBananaSeatMedia Thanks for swinging by
Glad to see that I am not the only one doing vgm music with the Essence! Sounds great, custom presets for melody ?
Thanks! It's all custom sounds. It's not quite as easy to get around as the Mask1, but by starting from the performance level and then making new patches and new voices for each part it was actually reasonably quick to program.
All sounds made in the Kodamo Mask1, some added effects in the MPC Live 2 and RV500, plus Analog Heat
Id definitely like to be able to have same phase of osc for each lfo pulse as you mentioned. Oh now that mod you mentioned of osc1 bitmask affecting pitch of osc2, fm with the mask 1... wow that would be a heck of an update if it happened. Wonder if it's possible. Or Osc sync maybe..? The new filter update makes the already nice filter even nicer. Definitely enjoy that one.
yes I agree Osc sync would be another great addition to the tonal possibilities of the Mask1
🎹 🔊 🎶 🎵 I like the future retro sounds 😎
thank you!
Great sounds and im enjoying the new visuals 🍌
wicked
thanks!
Banger 💯 🔥
Thanks
Excellent work my friend!👍👍👍
Thanks!
Pleasure!
Just using the internal arp and/or the LFOs to generate melodies
All Mask1, no external effects.
awesome!!
thanks!
I like the timbre of the last patch, and the one in the middle! The loopable envelopes are fun
thanks! yes when you run out of lfos the looping envelopes come in handy and can add quite a bit of tonal variation.
all mask1, some with the arp, some with the looper
This was awesome work! Very inspiring. I just got my Lyra-8 a week ago, and you were recommended to me by my buddy MP as an artist who actually can manage the Lyra a bit. It's a different beast from my dual strega rig and it's gonna take some time to unlock the secrets haha. I subbed and am looking forward to listening to more of your art.
thank you! I need to reconnect with my Lyra...

The Mask1's looper records the aftertouch response, which is set by default to filter cutoff - that could potentially be useful as a modulation source when using the looper. I didn't realise it at the time though which was causing some confusion when I was adjusting the filter as I couldn't see why it wouldn't close completely and was opening part way through the loop! lol.
Is it correct to say that this discontinuous quality of the bitmask oscillators is unique? or could you get a similar result using some other synthesis method (e.g. FM?) Let me know!
I think it's unique to bit masking . Maybe if the coarse ratio of each operator of an fm synth were far enough apart, for example doing that with sines and a spread of 8 octaves, applying fm to the other oscillator on a 2 osc synth with fm going up, gives bird sounds. Which are somewhat discontinuous. I've not tried it yet with other waveforms yet.
@@HarmonicSonics. Interesting - thanks for the response!
Can each multitimbral part be controlled by midi cc ?
Yes, it can. Pretty cool! There is one pair of stereo outs, at the moment you cannot fix the pan of individual sounds, but hopefully this can be done in a future firmware update so you can output a four part stereo mix in realtime.
Cool!!!
Thanks for watching!
Lovely range of sounds, deep bass, glitchy lead, and interesting melody. Very enjoyable!
Thanks for listening!
This is ideal. Incredible. You can get to many destinations on a patch!
Oh, Holy Shit! This has some amazing tonal functions!
Nice! Is this the Essence FM?
yes it is. its default sound is very clean but I have quite a lot of digital grunge going on here.
