@@fortheloveoftrains According to the,CRRC website (,Chinese manufacturer of rolling stock, including hopper wagons for Australia), each hopper wagon is just over 14.2 metres long. 126 wagons x 14.2 metres gives us 1,789.2 metres or 1.78km. Add in the three engines (I know nothing about Australian railways) and you are probably looking at just under 2km in total - or about 1¼ miles in old money.

I always remember a comment in a rail book about dieselisation after the war about all sorts of designs were tried out, many of them being quite unsuitable. Many of them had a very short life on BR, like many of these class 14s lasting barely 5 years before withdrawal. Wiki mentions that unlike other classes it was not because of unreliability, but because the roles they were built for - presumably shunting - were disappearing on the rail network. However most of them were sold to private industry where they worked for a decade or so, a few were sold for roles abroad and 34 of them, over half the class, ended up being preserved on heritage railways where they became Really Useful.

This is pretty typical for excursion runs. Modern coaches require head-end power connections that aren't available on steam locomotives. Additionally, in some places the diesel is required as a backup in case of a breakdown - granted, if a steam locomotive breaks down chances are it can still limp off to a siding, and a diesel is actually more likely to end up stuck on the main, but no one's taking any chances. In the US, Big Boy 4014 always runs with at least one SD70MAC behind it.
