Kanooch was a mid-1980s lyricist and music producer whose Japanese City Pop adjacent music works came to light after his death (2020). Despite limited information, Kanooch's fascinating story includes his unintended creation of the short-lived genre "Hedge Pop," a lesser spin off the 1980's City Pop genre.

Kanooch seemed never to be comfortable with recoding music in his native language, instead he “hedged” his music between a potpourri of styles and languages, almost always English with another language. In this way he hedged his bets, hoping that the music would catch on in one of the dozens of languages he wrote for. Sadly it did not work. The beginning and end of Hedge Pop was when City Pop artist Tatsu Takeshita joked at a conference that his next album would be a Hedge Pop LP. The normally strait-laced journalist laughed along with Takeshita for such a long time that the genre was forever tarnished.
