Ajarn Olli
Добавлен 9 авг 2021
I started this channel in 2021, primarily for my students in Bachelor's and Master's programs. The idea was to produce lecture content of approx. 20-30 minutes, instead of the customary 180-minute sessions.
From there, I expanded to publish also other (non-academic) content, focusing on topics related to Business, Strategy, Finance and Investing. The target audience is still students of these subjects - but then of course also anyone who is interested in hearing what I have to say about these topics. :-)
Important for me is that everything I share is based on facts & figures from credible and reliable sources, and (in the spirit of good Academic citizenship) the sources are listed on the slides that I show in my videos.
Feedback and comments are always highly welcome!

Applied Business Strategy 02 - Calculating Economic Value Added (EVA)
In this session, I take you through a concrete and practical example of how to calculate the Economic Value Added (EVA or Economic Profit) of a company. Referring to Lecture 02 of our Business Strategy lecture series, we first recap what EVA is, and then go step-by-step through calculating EVA for a Thailand-based food company.
We are only using public sources for the calculation, which allows you to replicate this calculation method for practically every listed company in the world (or, in fact, for any company for which you have access to its financials).
In the video, I will explain how to find the relevant sources using Google, but for completeness, let me post the links here as well:...

Such a great course thank you Mr Ajarn Olli
Thank you so much for the kind feedback!
Thanks to Mr. Arjan Olli this is a wonderful course
Thanks for this Dr. Alli, The Strategic Management Process Approach is very useful but seems to be a waterfall approach to strategy formulation. I don't know if this will make sense - but in literature or practice, are there newer approaches based on being agile/ continuous /iterative. I imagine high-tech firms, knowledge-led firms or start-ups would be interested in this.
I think this is a really great comment, and it gave me a lot to think… while my thoughts a re still evolving (and I am doing some readings to dig more into this), let me try to at least give a perspective: The challenge with trying to come up with an “agile” strategy is that quickly we are in the territory of short-term TACTICS rather than long-term strategy. You definitely always need tactics, but that’s an entirely different thing from a long-term strategic plan. Where agility CAN come in, though, is through the way a strategy is developed and the frequency it is reviewed and adjusted. This is currently already built in here: the lecture assumes a rolling 3-5 year plan, which is reviewed and adjusted on an annual basis. More frequent reviews and more agile small adjustments could be possible. Let me do some more thinking, but I believe even big agile tech firms would have at least some long-term strategy and solid guiding principles that allows them to set longer-term goals, such as increase in subscribers, geographic coverage, or longer term sales growth targets. If anyone has a perspective or thought on this, please share…
Very good explanation 👏
Thank you so much for the kind feedback 😊
Can you give the complete reference of the articles and books that you used to design the strategic management process? Thanks in advance
Sure, of course! I mainly use “Hitt, Ireland, Hoskisson” (originally I used the 2014 edition, but I also got several of the more recent editions, and they vary only very slightly, mainly in the case examples used). I also refer to several other strategy textbooks (source is always provided on the bottom of each slide I show), but my most favorite is Johnson et al (2015): Fundamentals of Strategy. It is compact, yet still quite complete and comprehensive. Also, since the authors are UK/Sweden-based, the case examples are a bit more diverse and less US-centric than Hitt, Ireland, Hoskisson. Hope that helps. If you need any further details, please let me know
Great videos series. Keep it up ❤
Is there a way one can get a certificate for this course after completion @Ajarn
This is one of best series of video on Strategy that I came across. It provides a structured view and relationships between different tools/frameworks/ideas. Most other on videos on strategy tend to approach “strategy” as nebulous and fractured concepts.
Thank you so much for the very kind feedback. Really appreciated - it means a lot to me!
What stocks would you personally recommend for 1 year profit Can I foreigner spend on the stock of Thailand

How? How is this course FREE?
😊 Thank you so much for the feedback! 🙏🏼 The explanation is simple: Teaching is my hobby, and the content here was originally just meant for my BBA students here in Thailand. But if it is helpful for other people also, I’m happy - and very happy to provide it for free as well. 😃😃😃
very good and clear

17 p/E for an emerging market with an unstable government is way way too high, it should be single figures, nobody who has any idea of investing would invest in the SET
That’s a very interesting remark indeed. I was curious, so I looked at monthly data for the SET since April 1975. The Index traded at a P/E ratio of below 10 in only 187 out of 587 months - so only about 32% of the time. For 400 months (or 68% of the time), the data shows a P/E of above 10. Overall average P/E since start of the index in 1975 was 13.7. The last time the index traded below 10 was in Feb 2009, so basically during the Financial Crisis. Neighbouring countries seem to trade at similar levels (Malaysia: 15.7, Indonesia 12.4, Vietnam 15.8). (Source: worldperatio.com) Something worth further study, I guess…
May I know, how to buy the stocks from the companies? 🥹🥹
That’s a great question! Let me make a separate video about how foreigners can invest in the Thai market. Thank you so much for the input, much appreciated indeed!
Why are you doing this for free? you should get at least 1000usd+ per lectures i personlly think. anyways i will def get back to you once my business kicks off!!
Hahaha, thank you so much for the kind feedback! This is just my hobby, and the channel was really meant for my students - but really appreciate the input and the idea!
Thats information is amazin!
Thank you so much for the kind feedback, really appreciated!
👍l was curious as to why Xtrackers MSCI Thailand ETF has underperformed the S&P 500 since 2014 and came across this gem by chance. Thanks.
Thank you so much for your feedback - especially as it gave me the inspiration to make a video about the recent performance of the SET and about some market fundamentals. Much appreciated indeed!
Thank you

Hi Olli, very interesting that much more Foreign Investors active against others like prop firms or instis ...and furthermore a good statistic overview "day of week" (best day Fri & Wed) and October better than November, it's some different from the american stock market. It is possible for a german resident to invest via thai discount broker in dividend stocks ?

Thank you for sharing. Greeting from Hanoi! Looking for your future valuable work.
Dear Mr. Ajarn Olli, thanks for your valuable series. I went through the 4 first videos, and have some confusion about this 4th video. Can you help me explain: (1) why the organizational structure is cataloged in tangible resources? (2) how can we calculate the value of some resources like organizational structure, human capital, and reputation capital,...? Thank you so much.
Thanks for the valuable series
Great content 👌
Thank you so much for the feedback 😊
thanks from brazil!
Thank you so much for the feedback and for visiting my channel :)
hello can give me your email please.
Whats the best strategy for Volkswagen ?
Great question! I would say VW largely follows a "Global Strategy": From what I can see there is limited pressure for local adaptation, while competition is high - and so is the pressure to stay cost-competitive. This also makes sense to me, as VW is a global brand, with high brand recognition world-wide. Having said that, one aspect to highlight is that - while using a (largely) unified global brand, Volkswagen DOES differentiate the positioning of its brand in different markets. Here in Thailand, for example, VW positions itself as a foreign upscale brand (in line with Audi, BMW, ...), with high pricing respectively. In Germany, on the other hand, I would categorize VW more in the "mass" segment. So - while the brand usage follows a global strategy, Volkswagen manages to benefit from higher margins in markets where it can positions its VW brand as a premium brand. Not sure that helps...?
