Who was Eva Holbrooks husband?

Great discussion! I have family all over Elliott and Carter County: Reynolds, Holbrooks, Binion and Barker to name a few. I have a newspaper clipping regarding the Regulators: James Binion being shot and killed by the Regulators as James was hiding a man named John Boggs, whom the Regulators came to run out of the county. James Binion was the brother of William Binion my 3 X Great Grandfather. James was also the father of Lincoln Binion, who was the assistant of Matthew Sellers (famed Aviator). James was born in 1825 and died in 1880. James was married to Nancy Matilda Barker, daughter of Hardin Barker and Annis Wilson. Hardin was the son on Hezekiah Barker & Susannah Sebastian our 4X Great Grandparents. There are Barkers and Binion's listed on the rosters of The Carter Regulators and a good chance that some of them were present the night that James Binion was killed.

My grandpa,Paul Duncan was Walter’s brother. My momma was Shirley Duncan and my aunt Wanda Duncan. I met Uncle Walter when I was a little girl. This is so awesome.

I am looking at Google Earth street view and trying to figure out where this place was. I found the park. But was the derby track where the main north-south park road is now? Or was it right next to the main road to the east?

Derby Hill, at 14th and Valley Av. I found this interesting because I worked at WBAT radio in the 1980's when I lived in Marion. I did not know of the derby history then. Our rival radio station was WGOM and it is fascinating how WBAT raced against WGOM.

Is this the William Cornett married to Mary Hatfield? I am researching my families history and it has led me down a road to West's related to the Cornett's via the Jesse Wesley Price family and Nancy Jane Cornett daughter of William Jesse Cornett Sr.

I am Bill Porter's daughter from Ohio. We used to visit Aunt Kate in Middletown quite a few times throughout my youth. I am writing a ballad about Jim and Ed's death. Jim was my great-great grandfather and Ed was my great grandfather. Elliott was my grandfather.

Thank you for "The Love Letter," both Parts 1 & 2. I'm not sure, but I believe Lizzie, in your story, was the sister of my Grandmother, Laura Ann (Clay) Parker. I'm the son of Clayton Parker, who left his home in Olive Hill in 1934. Clayton was the youngest of the children of Adam and Laura Parker.

My Great Grand Uncle James A. King, sept 1864, was taken harpers ferry then to point lookout & then he did the unthinkable, he became a traitor to the cause, & join the usa regular army for 3years term, have "tracked" him to fort levenworth & then he disappears, do not think he came back to the Great State of Georgia !

We at times try to do things our own way , in my younger years I kicked a lot of doors open in stead of going to God and leaning on him and seeing his will to open them, it was a hard way to get things done even if they worked out at all alot failed

Ina Kegley Fetters (1896-1994) (daughter of John Kegley (1844-1904) & Mary Wells) from Stark, KY 15 Nov. 1981 Interview in Marion, IN with JC Porter -Track 1-side 1:::::::::::::: Ina: They shot him first. They was there in the grocery store, the post office and grocery store, a general store it was. JC: Was that at Stark? Ina: Ya, it was at Stark. Post office was at Stark. It was a General Store, it had everything. They was there in the store. They got in an argument someway there in the store. I think one of these, Ed (Porter) had danced with one of these men's wives. I believe was the way the story went. I wouldn't tell you that for true. I think it started over that, they was at a dance. I think he danced with one of the men's wives. JC: And they were jealous? Ina: They shot him, and they cut him with a knife, cut his throat. And he lived about a week. They brought him home. They didn't take him home. They took him to a family that lived right close to the store. He was there a few days, then they brought him home. Then they had a surgeon come from Lexington, Kentucky and operate on him, and then he died at home.

Arabelle Porter Walker “Walking by Faith” I only met Arabelle Porter Walker once. It was June 1970. I was 10 years old. She was 84. It was one year before her death. We have a one minute home movie clip of that visit. I remember Arabelle sitting in her bed. It seemed like she was bed fast. I wondered how she took care of herself living there all alone. At that time, I didn’t really know who she was. Just some old lady who was related somehow. I remember she sat in her bed and gave her testimony of how God had saved her and kept her. I remember she read something, and even sang us a hymn. Her ceiling seemed to be caving in over her bed. Her house was very small. It seemed like a little shack to me. She had an old outhouse with a “Jesus Saves” sign over the door. At that time I thought wow, this little old lady has nothing. She has no one. She lives in this little shack in the middle of nowhere by herself with no running water. What does she have to live for? In later years, as I started researching our family history, I learned even more about Arabelle. I learned how she loved to attend church. How she loved to teach Sunday school. How she loved to sing. How strongly she believed in paying her tithes. How she believed in the power of prayer. After her and Boone Walker married, she learned that they could not have children of their own. They chose to adopt a son and a daughter. I’m sure they were proud of them, and loved them as their own. Their family pictures of their two children show that. Arabelle loved children, but never got to enjoy any grandchildren of her own. Arabelle lost her 18 year old daughter Goldie in 1925 in childbirth. A few years later, in 1932, their 22 year old son Warner was killed in a hunting accident. At that point, many people would question God. Some would say, “My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?” Maybe Arabelle asked God that question. I don’t know. The day I met Arabelle, in 1970, she had been a widow for over three years. That day I saw a lady who I thought had nothing, an old lady who was poor, alone, bedfast, widowed, childless, hopeless. As I think back, I realize that Arabelle saw things in a different way. Arabelle had placed her faith in her God. She testified of his love toward her. No matter all the difficulties that she had been through, she had not lost her faith in God. She believed that he would take care of her and see her through to the end. I’ve often wondered why when hard times come, some people run to God, and some people run away. Arabelle was definitely one who ran to God. He was her everything. The things of this world were not important to her. Hebrews chapter 11 is known as the Hall of Faith. It talks about the great patriarchs of the bible, Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Moses and on and on. Men and women who “by faith” obeyed God. And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised, because God had provided something better for us…Hebrews 11:39,40. Arabelle did not obtain worldly wealth as we know it. She laid up her treasures in Heaven. Her life is an example to us. I hope that each of us can learn from Arabelle that no matter what comes our way, when life is not fair, if we keep our faith in God, he will take care of us. And without faith it is impossible to please Him… Hebrews 11:6

Porter) at Jim Porter's home in Elliottsville, KY TABLE WALKING JC: What do you know about Levi (Porter, son of Andrew J. Porter) and his hypnotism? Did you ever see any of that? Jim: He said he could do it. JC: You've never seen him do it? Jim: No. Everett: I've heard it said he could though. Alice: You said somebody did Jim. Who was that? Jim: Uncle Levi. Everett: They said he did. Jim: He followed, he had a book that he read up on it, and he quit it. He said you could do harm with it with some people. Everett: It’s evil spirits is what it is. Jim: It stood right there on two legs and nobody touching it. Me a sitt’in on it, I was just a boy. It would do it. JC: So you were on there. They did it for you huh? Jim: They asked it to knock a lick, if uh, and it would raise up and knock a lick. Knock a lick if you would stand up like that, with this boy on it. JC: What were some of the other questions they would ask it? Jim: It was all mostly foolish questions. If you start the Bible on it, It would quit. JC: If what? Jim: Start the Bible, anything about the Bible, it wouldn't work. JC: It would go away then huh? Jim: It’d go away. ELIJAH PURNELL Jim: Now my brother, he didn’t like Elijah Purnell. You’ve heard of Elijah Purnell? He lived around there. Everett: Ya, I’ve heard of him. Jim: My brother didn’t like him. JC: Who’s that, didn't like who? Jim: Elijah Purnell. My oldest brother, Will (Porter), didn’t like Elijah Purnell. Everett: I've heard of Elijah Purnell Jim: My brother said to it (the table), or Wint one, I forget just which one. Said, “Is Elijah Purnell a thief?” Or something like that. “Knock a lick if he is.” Well it knocked a lick. Everett: It did? (laughing) Jim: Ya. And then they said, “Would he (Elijah) steal sheep?” It knocked a lick. (laughing) And they said, “How many sheep did he ever steal?” That thing just went to pecking up and down, and up and down, and up and down as fast as it could go. I sat there and looked, you wouldn't hardly believe... JC: The table knocked up and down? Jim: Table Walking. Everett: Ain’t Elisha Purnell the feller that went way off some where and had a big… Jim: He went to New Castle, Indiana. Everett: Well didn’t he have some kind of church or something that had a big following of some kind? Jim: He was a preacher a while. Everett: They called him Father Purnell, wasn't it? The people just run in there and thought he was a God. Jim: His children tells me that he went plum off. Went wild before he died. Everett: Now was Leslie Purnell his boy? I know’d Leslie. Jim: That’s his boy. He’s got grandchildren over here now. JC: You could see that table jumping up and down? Jim: It would raise right up and just peck the floor. LEVI HYPNOTISES A PREACHER Everett: I’ve heard Dad, Dad told us, he was staying with Wint. Wint was married. Jim: I think Wint was into that too. I think he was there that night, I’m pretty sure. Everett: Dad was the one doing most of it. They made a big... Jim: Right there at their house, in the room. That hypnotism can be worked. It can be worked on most anybody, catch you kindly off... Everett: Evil spirits. If you want to fool with evil spirits.... Jim: If a fella just wants to do it. Uncle Levi, he said they said there was some feller aimed to preach over there, and he didn’t like this preacher. Everett: Jess Collins, I’ve heard. Jim: What is it? Everett: Jess Collins. Jim: I forget the name. He said I just took a notion to go down there and I'll keep him from preaching tonight. JC: So what did he do? Jim: He won, he said. The old man got up and started to preach, and finally he just… Everett: He said, “The Devil’s in the house, the Devil's in the house, the preacher said.” Jim: He said he can’t preach tonight, and he sat down and quit. Everett: The next night they said he came out and said, “Is that old man Porter here?” JC: They said the old man with the beard, wasn’t it? Did Levi have a big beard? Everett: Huh? JC: Did Levi have a long beard? Jim: Ya, he had some beard. Everett: I guess he was a mean old.... Jim: Well no, he used to come to our house, and he would set up there, set in the house and talk all night. LEVI TRIES TO HYPNOTISE HIS BROTHER STEVE PORTER Everett: They said Uncle Steve (s/o Andrew J. Porter) was preaching somewhere, and Levi got up there and tried to charm him you know. He was preaching, and Uncle Steve, he could feel it you know. He was preaching there, and Uncle Levi was sitting up there looking right at him you know, trying to charm him. He said, “Levi, if you don’t quit fooling with that Devil spirit, the Devil’s gonna get you.” Boy, he just poured it on him. (laughing) Levi said, “Now, it won’t work on Steve.” He said his charm wouldn’t work on Steve. Jim: It was kindly on people that was easy pulled over, what he said would work. JC: Wonder how he got started into that? Everett: Books I guess. Jim: Well sir, I don’t know. Of course he went through that civil war. Fact about it, he got mean, that’s all there was to it. Everett: He had the Devil in him. Jim: He didn’t care much what he done.

Dear JC, You have been generous in crediting Allen Hunt and myself for working on the Hunt cemetery near Gainesville, Ky. I would like to be sure that the viewers of your site also credit Bill and Nancy Ann Hunt Buckingham (she has passed), and Jack and Faye Hunt. Nancy and Jack Hunt are two of the children of IN Hunt, brother to my grandfather Kenneth Hunt and son of Chasteen Hunt. There are always locals that know of the existence or location of cemeteries, even if they don't know the occupants. When I first started traveling to Allen Co in search of the history of the Hunts and the old cemetery, I happened across one of the locals, Joyce Marr, that I recently referenced in information about the video of Jimmie Turner. She not only knew of the location of the cemetery, but was born on the land that was previously Chasteen Hunt's. She told me it was up the hill past the locked gate on a farm that she knew the owner of. I was making frequent trips to Allen Co and didn't want to wait for her to catch him, so I hiked up the hill, verified this was the old cemetery, and left quickly as a storm was coming in late in the day. So Joyce gets credit for "locating" the cemetery. I started working on the cemetery, asked Allen Hunt to help, and we continued. I was working out of pocket for some months, but Jack and Nancy each sent Allen and I a generous check, and at this point, they have funded 100% of our expenditures. Eventually Allen and I will be out of pocket, but Jack and Nancy should get credit for assistance with the cemetery. Steve Hunt

What an interesting story!! He did make some questionable decisions. My background is from the Northeast in the late 1600's until our family moved west. This, John C. Porter, has tried to live a life less dramatic, haha. I'm a Captain for Delta and sure enjoyed hearing the story of someone who shares my same name.

Part 2 of 2 of this video at 25:40, the audio of Arabelle (d/o Alex, s/o AJP) is in error. Arabelle is talking about "Dad." I thought she was talking about her dad Alex, but I since learned that she was talking about her husband Boone Walker, whom she affectionately called "Dad." Debbie Hatfield is Senia Erwin's (d/o Frances Keaton, d/o Jasper Porter, s/o Alex, s/o AJP) little girl who sang at Boone Walker's funeral.

Another version of this story from Viola Bego (daughter of Ed Porter, son of Levi, son of Andrew J. Porter) March 29, 1980 Interview (Track 2) (1:27) JC: You mean people would pay to see that? Viola: No, they just went to see it for the fun of it, I reckon. I reckon they just went to see it for the fun of it. The last account I heard of him, having anything to do with that, that was after I was married the first time. There was Pentecost preaching going on at Pleasant Valley, and they was having a big time up there, having a nice time. He wanted my brother Will (Porter, s/o Ed) to go with him up there. Uncle Bird (Porter) went. And somebody else, I don’t know who else went. And they said that the preacher couldn’t, he said if he was right, or anything like that, he couldn’t do a thing on earth with them. And if they wasn’t, there wouldn’t be no church there that night. Well there wasn’t no church that night. (Laughing) JC: He hypnotized the preacher? Viola: That’s what they said. Some said, “Well the Devil’s in the house.” (Laughing) Oh Lord, Uncle Bird (Porter), he come back just killing himself laughing, but Will (Porter) my brother, he wouldn’t go. He said, Nah, he wasn’t aimed to go. It was at Pleasant Valley. Or Pleasant Hill it was, not Pleasant Valley up there at that cemetery where they have a church house.

He’d know that we wouldn’t know the difference. He went out to the tongue people, you’ve heard of them, Pentecost. JC: Ya. Everett: They was holding a meeting out on the ridge just this side of his place. He lived back on the left. Porter Creek. He come out there. He had a beard, and he would just go out there and sit. He claimed he could put the power on em, he said I can tell if they’re right or wrong. He said if they are right, I can’t put the power on em, but if they’re not, I can. Well a feller by the name of Jess Collins, he had the meeting get out, and Uncle Levi went down there, and I think he got on the front seat. So he just set there. The time come for Jess to preach, and he got up and said, “The Devil’s here.” (laughing) He said, “I can’t think of nothing to say. The devil’s here and he’s got his power on me. All I know to do is just dismiss and try it again tomorrow night.” So he’d heard a little before the next night, and he come back. He said, “Is old man Porter here tonight?” (laughing)

Here is my grandpa's version of the same story....................................Everett Porter (1904-1987) (s/o Jasper, s/o Alex, s/o AJP) Track 3 June 9, 1978 JC: What could Levi (son of Andrew J. Porter) do? Everett: Oh, he could hypnotize anybody. He could lay you down, your head on one chair and your feet on another. You could sit down in the middle of them, and you would be so stiff you wouldn't even bend them down. He'd go to church and say, “I'll try your preacher out for you boy. Tell you what kind of preacher you've got.” He'd get right up there in the front and sit down and watch the preacher, and if he could, he would hypnotize him. JC: He would hypnotize the preacher while he was preaching? Everett: Ya, if he could. He said, “If my spirit will work on him, he ain't no good.” That's what he'd say. Uncle Steve Porter (s/o AJP) was Levi's brother you know. He got up there to try Uncle Steve out you know. He was putting his spirit on him, on Uncle Steve. Uncle Steve know'd what he was a doing. He looked right down at him and said, “Levi, if you keep fooling with that Devil stuff, you'll go right straight to hell.” He said, “The Devil will get you sure as the world if you don't quit fooling with that stuff.” Boy he gave him the awfullest bawling out ever was. His spirit wouldn't work on him. He said if his spirit would work on them, he wasn't no good preacher you know. That's the way he would try them out

(Track 1) JC: How did he ever get into all this hypnotism? Don: He bought books and read em. He bought books and got into it. JC: How old was he when he started? Don: I don’t know just how old he was. Arney: He should have read the Bible. (laughing) Don: That is how he got into it. He bought books Dad said. They said he was an awful good turned fellow. Awful good and kind as he could be. JC: They talked about him trying to hypnotize a preacher once. Don: Ya. I’ve heard tell that. They said that this…My mother told this, she remembered this too. This preacher got up and started to preaching, Coy Parish (10:40) he told me about it, he could remember it you know. Said my grandpa (Levi Porter) said, “Now if he is of God , I can’t do nothing with him. If he ain’t, I can stop him from preaching.” He got up and started preaching, talked a little while, then said, “Well ladies and gentlemen, the Devil is here tonight. I can’t do a thing.” Then he just dismissed the church. They said that a few nights after that, he come back and right before he started preaching, he wanted to know if that old man Porter was there. (laughing) Ya, that was actually the truth. Arney: I heard em tell about over there at the Limestone Church, what was his name that lived down below us there? They said that he (Levi) made him fish and do a little bit of everything, stop preaching.

Here is 1 of 4 Versions of this story that I heard from the older generation.....From Harlan Porter's (s/o Alex, s/o AJP) 1978 Interview (Track 7)... JC: What can you tell me about Levi and that hypnotism stuff that he did? Harlan: Well, I can tell you one thing. There was a Pentecost preacher come out there at Clark Hill. Uncle Levi said, “I believe I will go out there and try my power on him.” He’d study these hypnotism books all the time. They said he could put fellers to sleep. He went out, that long beard you know, and that would pretty near get anybody’s attention. Said the old preacher got up and read his text, and Jess Collins of Olive Hill, and this is a fact. The preacher, he read his text, and his tongue got to getting thick. He said, “Evil Spirits here.” He dismissed. Next time he come back he said, “That old long whiskered feller ain’t here is he?” (laughing) He (Levi) had a boy Byrd Porter who put his wife to sleep. He learned how to do that. But he didn’t know how to wake her up. He had to go get Pa (Levi) to wake her up. (laughing)

We have been unable to find a Clyde and Beckham Porter in this area, at this time. However, Clyde and Beckham Flannery (sons of Molly Flannery, daughter of Steve Porter, son of Andrew J. Porter) were the same age as mentioned in this article. I called Janette Marcum (daughter of Beckham Flannery), who confirmed that her dad was accidentally shot in the shoulder by one of his brothers, and he carried a scar all of his life. So I am now thinking that the reporter who wrote this story just got their last name mixed up, calling them Porter instead of Flannery.
