Добавлен 8 авг 2017
The Erwin Schrödinger International Institute for Mathematics and Physics, founded in 1993 and part of the University of Vienna since 2011, is committed to the promotion of scholarly research in mathematics and physics.
In the beginning its focus was on mathematical physics and mathematics and it has gained an international reputation in these fields of research. Over the years, the thematic spectrum of its scientific activities has been carefully extended, while maintaining high scientific standards. Recently, the ESI has enlarged its fields of competence to include theoretical, computational and experimental aspects of mathematics and physics.
It is the Institute’s foremost objective to advance scientific knowledge over broad ranges of fields and themes in mathematics and physics, with an emphasis on the interface between them.

This talk was part of the Graduate School on "Non-equilibrium Processes in Physics and Biology" held at the ESI August 19 30, 2024. I will cover a statistical-physics approach to describe colloidal suspensions and systems of active particles, the integration-through transients (ITT) framework. We will look at the fundamentals of nonequilibrium stochastic processes, the derivation of exact equat...

This talk was part of the Graduate School on "Non-equilibrium Processes in Physics and Biology" held at the ESI August 19 30, 2024. The last two decades have seen significant advances in our understanding of the mechanisms of plasticity and flow in amorphous solids and supercooled liquids. In the solid, irreversible deformations result from the accumulation of local rearrangements that are cont...

This talk was part of the Graduate School on "Non-equilibrium Processes in Physics and Biology" held at the ESI August 19 30, 2024. The course will present recent advances concerning the microscopic stress autocorrelation in amorphous solids [1-4]. It has recently emerged, indeed, that the existence of asymptotic power-law tails (decaying as in dimension and with being the distance) is a highly...

Excellent presentation. An error that needs revision is the fundamental aspect of life, time 2'35", defiance of the 2nd Law. No machine can maintain homeostasis, it needs an external source of energy greater that homeostasis it produces. Thus, the AC may cool your room, but the total heat, considering the outside, is greater with the AC on. The order that a molecule imparts on the environment, through life, considering all the heat exchanges, violates the 2nd Law, and nothing in this universe is supposed to violate the 2nd Law. Hence, we need to re-think our laws of physics. I think Schrödinger told the whole story.
Thanks for sharing
Great lecture. Love from Pakistan♥.
@1:20 you are therefore stating "an agent's personal beliefs" could "derive from pure quantum states". This is one dopey mix-up of concepts. Pure quantum states relate to a theory of physics. Sure, "people" came up with QM and this theory informs our beliefs, but the physical reality we perceive is not the source of our beliefs. Our beliefs are a category of mental qualia, and physics has absolutely no clue where those qualia come from. They are not brain states. They are something else, and it is not physics. So they cannot derive from quantum mechanics (which is physics). Unless you are prepared to do violence to the definition of the word "physics", but then you are causing a mess of mixing of domains of scientific modelling, which is unhealthy in my view (especially for clean physics pedagogy --- and I am by no means an establishment guy, I do however value good pedagogy in learning, even if the student has to find it for themselves).
Awful professor. Don’t take his courses in tamu. The teaching and homework exercises are very unhelpful and time consuming. Exam problems are worse, he can’t grab the key points. Why assign him to teach?
Really interesting talk!

Great to see people thinking in this world. 😮
Great lecture

bummer.....can't read the board....
Interesting lecture, particularly curious about how material properties beyond conductivity, like permittivity and permeability, might influence the temperature dependence at larger distances (> lambda_th) for complex materials. Have there been any studies on this extension of the theory?

excellent work ...question....are integral proteins motors?
Thank you very much for sharing transparently and in detail our challenges to a much more precise clock!

It’s interesting to hear the language of algebraic topology/homotopy theory diffusing into grad student physics lectures over the years. [I know it’s a theory institute… but still…]
Very nice presentation 👏. Thanks.
