Sewing Elizabeth Taylor's Dress from "Suddenly, Last Summer" (1959)
Hello! I decided to take on this project of recreating this green dress Elizabeth Taylor wore in Suddenly, Last Summer (1959) originally designed by Oliver Messel. I have learned alot throughout this process and I think I may have found one of my favorite actresses along the way. Dame Elizabeth was a talented actress who worked tiredlessly for AIDS/HIV. She stepped up and made alot of contributions, here is a video I enjoyed watching of her at the GLAAD awards.

Hi, welcome to my first youtube video! During the week of spring break I decided to sew a 1950's swimsuit following a Vogue 9230 reproduction pattern. I have a passion for sewing and slowly building up my vintage wardrobe. This swimsuit will be perfect for my summer handmade wardrobe. I'm excited to share the process and whatever other videos come to mind. Thankyou for watching (: Swimsuit & Ha...

Love this! Also your hair is so cute!
thankyou ☺️
your scissor holder is SO cute!!
omg thankyou so much!! my mom got it for me from ross ! (its a retail store) but i didn't get the brand name or anything 😭 but maybe its online (,: lol she always grabs things for me sewing related it's so wholesome
Beautiful
thankyou beautiful!!
Another beautiful make!
thankyou so so much ✨🐛
My Jen!!!! U killed this
I love you stephh ❤️☺️
Your piece is so refined w/ a nice charm to the look of the material I could die making it that I can't wait to see your next work!
thankyou Dorothy !! I feel you on that 🤣 a good fabric makes me so happy and want to die in a good way too lol ! Thankyou for your constant support ☺️❤️
Love, love your whole approach from beginning history to your spectacular ending! I am just a generation younger than Liz Taylor and I feel the same way about her as you expressed. Keep doing this, you are a very good instructor, interesting and on target! I subscribed because I was very impressed. The only other person doing similar work that I feel is worth watching for an hour or more is “Gertie”! Gertie’s work is accurate and fabulous but that can be intimidating for a new sewer. Jen, by your admitting to being a new sewer and pattern drafter, you make it seem possible for those new to the world of sewing. Thank you for delighting me a life long sewer and fashion creator as a hobby who sometimes still fantasizes about making it a career. xoJo
thankyou Jo this was so sweet to read ☺️❤️ I really appreciate your kind words !! I still need to watch more Gerties videos and once I save up I'm definitely buying their books or subscribing to the patreon 📚 and as a beginner tackling these projects allows new sewists to feel capable of making a garment themselves ❤️ Thankyou for watching!! i was afraid it was drawn out or too long but that is sewing! very slow and methodical to get the desired result 🪡 I admire you've sewn for so long ! it is such an awesome hobby 👏🏼 (and yes i fantasize to make it a career too) but it is definitely going to stay in my wheelhouse
I love thrifting and coffee/breakfast!
same 🥹❤️ it's so fun and calming
You did a beautiful job and the dress is lovely. Can you please share the name of the vintage book you bought on Construction? Is it Garment Construction? Thanks! Also, I love the idea of making garments inspired by movies. Also, Spanish is my firs language too and although I've been speaking English for all my adult life, every once in a while my accent will come out. (Sheet for s**t for instance. I still can't pronounce "iron" properly.)
Omg yess the spanish comes out when I'm mad too (even though I'm trying to be serious so it breaks the tension 🤣) It is called Clothing Construction by Mansfield! (: alot of great techniques and even fabric information ☺️ Thankyou for the lovely compliment! It is fun and inspiring making something from a film, also a challenge 🌷
You did a lovely job. The fit is stunning, better than the dress than the dress that Elizabeth wore. The colour is beautiful on you and the pink really does make your skin glow.
thankyou so much 🥰 and wow can't believe the fit is that good 😊 it feels good too which is so nice, pink and green is so lovely thankyou again 🥹 have a great day ☀️
STUNNING dress, belt and scarf... can really appreciate how much work has gone into this! P.S. your dog is super cute haha
Thankyou Joanna ☺️❤️ so sweet and Zoey said thankyou too 🐕🤭
¡Feliz costura!
I am wondering, how much fabric did you need just for the skirt? Does cutting the skirt in panels save more fabric than if you were to cut it whole? Thanks!
great question i was going to mention that but totally forgot ! I bought 5 yards and was left with 1.7 yards (: i'm not sure how much the skirt used, theres a calculator on mood to help figure out i will link in description! but thats also a good question, I added 3/4 of an inch seam allowance to each side so that adds up to 18 more inches rather than the regular side seam allowances + back zipper seam allowance = 4.5 inches more but i used 3/4 inch seam allowance could even use 5/8 really depends what you prefer (: I may be wrong someone correct me if i am 🫣
the skirt used around 2.6-3 yards (: but the width of this fabric is 57" my skirt is 34 inches in length (cut out) then i evened out and folded it up 1 1/2 inches (:
@@jensewsvintage Thank you so much!
stunning! I'm glad I discovered this channel
thank you and yay! it can be hard to find creators on youtube 🌸
Stunning! Great job!
thank you 💚🌷
Wow! Just wow! As others have said, your slow, mindful approach to the design, fitting and construction of this dress is very watchable. I love your careful preparation. The outcome was just wonderful. You should be really pleased and proud of this. ET would have loved you for it. Keep them coming Jen - we're all waiting for your next inspiration 👏👏👏
Thankyou Vanessa always so supportive!! 🥹❤️ I'm very thankful ☺️
WOW!!! great job, it looks amazing. Have you seen the new emily in paris? She is in rome and dresses like audrey :) might be some good inspo/ trendy content 😂
thankyou for the sweet comment !! and no I haven't i'm not sure why I didn't like it 😭 I like her as an actress though I think tv series are tough, but thats pretty interesting! Audrey Hepburn has a chokehold on me too 🤣 she was the reason I started dressing 50s I blame the film "Funny Face" ❤️
Wow amazing work I subscribed so fast to your channel thanks for inspiring us 🥰
thankyou for the sub ☺️ and you're welcome i love being inspired by others and now felt like blabbering and inspiring others too 🥹❤️
Hand launder your linen fabric with Dawn dishwashing liquid. It helps keep it from wrinkling so badly. Be sure to test if colorfast and for shrinkage with a small sample first. I got this hint from a Sandra Bettzina seminar
So beautiful, every part! The dress is beautiful, the video is beautiful and the fit is stunning.
thankyou so very much 🌷🥰 I appreciate your kind words 🥹
Linen is a great fiber. It's easy to sew with, will keep you cool in hot weather, wick moisture away from the body, and it's strong when wet so it's machine washable. As long as you don't mind a bit of ironing it's just about the perfect fiber.
honestly it is perfection ❤️🥰 especially as a Texan it's so hot and humid 🥵 the only thing is the priceee, i understand price to pay is so worth it but just gotta save up 🥲
I think you're very talented. Pattern drafting is not that difficult, once you have the basics. A great resource is Pattern Making for Fashion Design by Helen Joseph Armstrong. It has all the basics to get you started. On the linen fabric, Sandra Betzina's pre-shinking techniques are worth looking at if you want to prevent a slew of wrinkles in the future. The dress looks lovely. Well done!
Thankyou (: and I have that book I got really into wanting to learn and made a bodice block but then i myself got creativity block 😭🤣 I think I need guidance I am watching videos and such but it can hard (maybe just me) 🥲 Thankyou for the recommendations!! I read it and wow theres so much information ☺️ it makes sense that pattern-making is a whole education and people charge for classes, because it is ☺️ I am determined to learn someday maybe once I can pay for a lesson for now I drape and slowly learn 🌸
ya'll are all so empowering and inspiring I will definitely try 🥹
Wow really well done! 'Stop it some more' lol :D
thank you 🥹 I tried so hard and it worked out, and yes I realize how silly I am once I'm editing 🤭 it's a great response to a compliment that is sweet 🤣
I had never heard of it as I am Dutch and my English is limited. I thought it was a super smart/ funny thing to say indeed!
What a beautiful dress! The color and design are perfect for you. Great job!
thankyou lovely ☺️🥰 !
Those twirls in the reveal are worth a million bucks, it hangs beautifully, truly a dream dress.
thats so sweet 🥹☺️ thankyou ! and yes it's honestly the best part of a circle skirt 😍 it's also great for social distancing just start spinning to declare the space around me 🤣
I love it, its beautiful
thankyou Irene ! ☺️
Cat on a hot tin roof is my favorite Elizabeth Taylor movie!!!!!❤❤❤❤ I hope you love it!!!
thankyou and yes I'm so ready 😍 her acting is mesmerizing ! and it's based on another Tennessee Williams play
There are only 2 (and a half) outfits in the movie, and I adore every one. My goal is to one day draft and sew all of them for myself@@jensewsvintage
It's absolutely beautiful!!!! You did a fantastic job!!!❤❤❤
thankyou for the kind words 🌞🌷
Fantastic work, we have a made to order dress called Roxy that is very similar. Some clients ask for light boning to keep the bustier looking good when they sit. Look forward to your interpretation of a 50s classic style. We are also self taught and would be happy to help over Zoom (we are in Switzerland) with information sources and drafting tips! No 1000€ to pay we like to share! After all we also got most our info for free (thanks grandma)
thankyou that is very helpful ☺️
The dress looks amazing! Red would really suit you as well.
thankyou and I appreciate that comment! I really want to make Audrey Hepburns red dress from funny face ❤️❤️
One of the very best self pattern drafting RUclipsr is the closet historian. She is very talented and explains it in a way that it's very understandable about how to go from your basic Block pattern and draft basically any kind of design you want from that!
What a beautiful job you've done!
thankyou and yes I love the closet historian !! I linked their circle pattern video I used 😆 I did my basic bodice blocks with the help of their videos i think the book patternmaking and design trips me up but yes a wonderful resource!
never seen this movie or this dress but it turned out great! i think your drawing of the dress was very nice as well :)
thankyou so much! ☺️
Girl this is gorge. I seriously need to pick up that book! If you ever want good background noise, i really recommend watching Gertie from Charm Patterns (even if you dont sew her patterns). She teaches a lot of vintage couture techniques. Its literally how i learned to bone my first bodice lmao
I think I'm intimidated to start! 😆 where did you start with Gerties patterns if you mind me asking ☺️ I know theres a patreon too, and books I wannnt a book! I think I need more time and money 🥵 and thankyou so much I appreciate it ❤️🥹
Beautiful and elegant!
thankyou so much 💚
Gorgeous!
Ahh! Can’t get over how good it came out and how stunning you looked!!🤍
I love you bestie 🥹☺️❤️ always so supportive and kind 😭
Wow, Jen, it's absolutely beautiful, you nailed the look. I love the way you work and just jump in and do it so well. I am looking forward to your next masterpiece. Thanks for sharing.
Thankyou Janie !! and yes the hardest part is starting ! Gotta go in and work ok mistakes along the way 🫶🏻 and thats so sweet thankyou for supporting ☺️❤️
Oh, old sheets are great for mock ups!
I need to thrift some you're so right! but goodwill has been so expensive lately the muslim ends up cheaper I'll keep looking though 🥹
Sweety, we didn’t think you were farting. BYW you look like Elizabeth Taylor. I think you are very brave❤
HAHA the chair may deceive 🪑 thankyou she's so stunning 🥹❤️ it helps that I have a bob :^)
You really went all out, it turned out beautifully. Really surprised how much stock from the 50s you can find.
Thankyou! yes very interesting and I'm obsessed 🤩
I bought that album when it first came out (showing my age) and it came with a space ship you could construct. ELO are one of my fave bands ever and that album evokes very happy teenage memories for me. Your dress is fabulous and you look stunning in it!
And Pink Floyd! You have great taste!
really!! that sounds awesome I smiled so big reading this ☺️ I want the spaceshippp 😭🤣 and no don't worry about age thats when there was good music ! 70s is my favorite era of music 🎶
@Hide_and_silk thankyou (,:
This is the first video of yours that I've seen and I loved it! I love how calm and mindful your approach to sewing and video-making is, and your dress turned out absolutely stunningly. That dress will serve you well for decades to come!
thankyou so much i appreciate it 🥹❤️ I'm happy you took the time to watch! I tend to get anxious/overwhelmed when watching super fast paced videos, it doesn't help that youtube rewards that 😅 I just try my best to not overwhelm ya'll and just inspire ☺️ some people love fast paced so it really depends, but with sewing I think slow and steady is how i roll going fast will end up in more mistakes and take the fun out 🌞 have a good day cass (:
You did an amazing job.
thankyou! I appreciate it 😄 takes time and many mistakes 🌷
Been there. This is how we learn. Our mistakes that we do are only seen by us. The learning that comes from them allows us to grow. I would love to see you do an Audrey Hepburn inspired dress. You have her vibe.
@@pinatrima3116aw thankyou I'm currently saving up to do the red dress from funny face and the black dress from sabrina ❤️🥹
@@jensewsvintage I made the Sabrina dress. Mood has a free pattern
Turned out beautiful. One of the best jobs I've seen on RUclips and from a fellow Texan. Good job!
You did such an amazing job! I love this dress and it looks amazing on you!
thankyou for the lovely comment!! (,: I love this dress too she has so many iconic looks 💚
How beautiful! Fits you to perfection. Thank you for sharing! Very inspiring.
Thankyou you're so sweet, i used the style lines on my dress form to draft the pattern, lots of fittings ! I love to inspire others, especially as beginners <3 I appreciate your comment 🫶🏻
Almost an hour long video?! LOVED IT!
thankyou ! I love long videos too :D !!
