Professor Newtoff
Добавлен 13 мар 2014
Hi! My name is Professor Newtoff and I teach Environmental Biology and Principles of Biology II: Ecology & Evolution. I started creating lecture videos for these classes to do a flipped classroom and to teach online. I'm a strong supporter of open education, so I have made my videos public to hopefully help students around the world! I do monetize my videos, but I exclusively only use skippable and closable ads. Of course, it helps me if you watch them or keep them up, but your education is more important! I try to stay on top of comments, so if you have a question about the content, want me to share my sources or slides, please let me know and I will get back to you as soon as I can!
Recycling in Montgomery County, MD
While this video focuses on Montgomery County, MD, many principles of recycling from this video can be applied to many other municipalities -- especially with recycling plastic films! Here in the county, we use dual stream recycling, but single stream is more common across the United States. Europe utilizes multi stream, having many different containers to separate out recyclables. How well and often resources (particularly plastics) are recycled is largely dependent on how well residents are sorting their recycling, especially in dual and multi stream programs. Single stream programs have many issues trying to sell their recyclables since there are so many impurities in the product.

Composting in Montgomery County, MD
Просмотров 1437 месяцев назад
While this video is specific to the services provided in Montgomery County, MD, it can still be helpful to learn about all the different programs that exist and some of them may apply to your locale! We also briefly explore composting at home and the things that you can and cannot compost on the small scale. Here's some helpful links for county programs: - Take part in the food scraps pilot in ...
Solid Waste Management in Montgomery County, MD

The first part of this video explores some trends in waste in the United States, but then gets specific to how Montgomery County, MD handles their solid and hazardous waste. We use the waste incineration to energy process, which only a few dozen places in the U.S. practice (though, this is a lot more common in Europe where land for landfills is harder to come by). But, no matter where you are i...
The Scientific Method: What It Is and How It's Part of Your Daily Life
Просмотров 1237 месяцев назад
I can guarantee that you have used the scientific method sometime in the past week. We use it all the time, and we don't even realize it. We have this innate ability to reason through different scenarios, test them out, and try something new. BAM! You just did science! From figuring out why your video game console isn't working to understanding the variables that impact plant growth - you are d...
Impacts of Climate Change on World Temperature and Weather Patterns (2024)
Просмотров 1768 месяцев назад
With an increase in greenhouse gases in our atmosphere (mainly from the burning of fossil fuels), it's to be expected that the greenhouse effect is strengthened and more warming occurs. This videos talks about trends in global temperature and it's impact on weather and sever storms such as hurricanes. In addition to exploring these impacts to humans, we also explore the impact it is making to o...
How are Fossil Fuels Made?
Просмотров 1448 месяцев назад
You have probably heard of the fossil fuels: oil, natural gas, and coal. But where exactly do they come from? What made them? What are they made out of? This video explores all of this and more in an effort to better understand how combustion of these fuels leads to carbon dioxide emissions (in a future video). I would encourage you to watch my entire Climate Change playlist (ruclips.net/p/PL2b...
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Emissions by U.S. State
Просмотров 1728 месяцев назад
Most air pollution laws in the United States are regulated at the national level, so the state data isn't THAT important. But, the state level data can provide interesting insights into how carbon dioxide emissions differ based on infrastructure and population density. This video was made with the most up-to-date information available in March 2024. I'm not updating these videos every year, so ...
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Emissions by Country
Просмотров 2248 месяцев назад
At the end of the day, the total amount of carbon dioxide emissions is the most important, as CO2 from anywhere will affect the climate everywhere. But in reality, we don't have a global regulatory body and emissions are regulated at the national level. It's important to understand how a country's development, culture, and population all have an impact on emissions and how other countries can h...
Combustion's Impact on the Carbon Cycle
Просмотров 2488 месяцев назад
In my carbon cycle video, you learned about the different slow and fast carbon pathways that carbon takes to move throughout Earth. However, a new pathway has been added by humans: combustion (essentially, fire). While combustion existed before humans, humans have been using the process of combustion a lot more as we use our ingenuity to put combustion to work. However, this process is taking c...
Changing Carbon Dioxide (CO2) In Our Atmosphere
Просмотров 838 месяцев назад
Logically, it makes sense that carbon dioxide is increasing in our atmosphere. Humans burn carbon based fuels such as wood, coal, oil, and natural gas and in the presence of oxygen, it will make the byproduct of carbon dioxide (CO2). But just how much CO2 have we been producing? And how much more is that compared to our past? How is what is happening today any different than what Earth naturall...
Some Water Pollution is Okay: The NPDES
Просмотров 4008 месяцев назад
The NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) is a permitting system in the United States governed by the Environmental Protection Agency under the Clean Water Act. This permitting system allows entities to pollute, but is regulated in the frequency, type, and amount. Nature CAN break down pollution on her own, and this system takes advantage of that fact. Unfortunately, our techn...
A Flash Talk of a Flash Talk (or a PechaKucha) and Tips on Making One
Просмотров 2619 месяцев назад
A flash talk (or originally a PechaKucha, created in Japan) is a presentation style to share information in just a few minutes. It's hallmark is that it is an automatic talk; the slides advance automatically after a predetermined amount of time. The flash talk presented here has 10 slides each for 18 seconds, resulting in a 3 minute presentation. This isn't a standard though, different organiza...
Regulating GMOs (with a focus on the United States)
Просмотров 2379 месяцев назад
GMO crops are here to stay, but countries are making decisions for themselves to allow them to be grown within their borders, to be imported as goods, and to be sold to their population. The decisions countries make for themselves can also provide some input on how they view the safety of GMO crops in regards to human health and the environment. This video takes a closer look to the GMO labelin...
The Impact of GMOs on Human and Environmental Health
Просмотров 7889 месяцев назад
The BIG question when it comes to GMO crops (and other food items, though, not explored in this video) is "Are they safe?". And that answer really depends on what we consider as safe, and safe for whom? This video explores the timeline of GMOs and its relationship with human health and also explores ways that GMOs can affect our environment. Some other videos that may be helpful in your underst...
Class Trematoda: Flukes not Flounder
Просмотров 89710 месяцев назад
One of the classes in Phylum Platyhelminthes is Class Trematoda, which contains all of the flukes. All of the flukes are parasitic with some using one host and others using two (or more!). Despite the variation in life cycles, they all share that at least one of the hosts must be a mollusk, such as a snail, octopus, or clam. Some trematodes can even use mind control on their host to make them d...

Maybe these people should travel to China and India... Then complain
Just because other places are polluting more, doesn't mean we can't try to reduce our own emissions!
@@ProfessorNewtoff solar and windmills pollute the world far much worse than coal and oil..
I love the way you teach! Really fun and engaging, absolutely loved the lesson
I really appreciate it, thank you so much :)
Hi Mam Please Continue Your lecture video Thanks
thank you!! you really help keep me up with my lecture😭
Awesome, I'm glad to hear it! Good luck this semester :)
Angiosperm 80 persent green plants.
this is so helpful thank you
thank you so much! helped me a lot with zoology part!
You're very welcome! Good luck in your studies!
What if pollen ( A) tree reaches to egg tree of different family (B) not the same of A tree. What will happen 🤔
So sometimes they will make a new hybrid plant! Plants can "swap" egg/sperm between species with smaller problems than when it happens in the animal world. But sometimes the egg and sperm meet and nothing happens. Usually, the pollen tube won't even form in the first place because it doesn't "detect" what it's looking for (the egg of the same species).
@ProfessorNewtoff thank you prof
You are the besssssttttt❤
such a great video doc
Very good explanation
Cheer~~~a large phylum of worms with slender, unsegmented, cylindrical bodies, including the roundworms, threadworms, and eelworms. They are found abundantly in soil and water, and many are parasites.😊
🐐
Thank you so much for your clear explanation.
You're very welcome! Good luck with your fungal adventures!
Chitin is also found in fungal cell walls. Just felt like i had to mention it. I’m really enjoying your lectures. I really should be focusing on higher plant and invertebrate systematics right now, but I’m really enjoying procrastinating by reviewing knowledge from previous semesters through your narration.
Thank you for all your comments and positive vibes! I'm glad my channel has been helpful for you and you've learned some cool things along the way. I know I can do more to tell the story of evolution between the different groups, but I'm glad that the story I do tell is helping you get the information better than just learning a bunch of facts. I hope your invert exam went well!
I was seriously fully prepared to fail my invertebrate exam. You are an amazing propagator of knowledge, i am SO glad i went to RUclips in my desperate inability to form actual maps of knowledge in my synaptic castle. My professor just dropped a script on me, and told me to learn the monotonous text in it by heart. Which i have epically failed at. You are ensuring i not just squeak through, but actually attain and retain relevant knowledge on the subject.
Immensely helpful! I wish my professor took the time to explain this, show us a Phylogenie tree instead of dropping a cryptic script for us to learn by heart, and buggering off.
you know when my lecture explained this ... i didnt understand him at all and that goes for almost all my zoology lectures but to have you on my side ... teaching me and able to understand what you are saying in any of your videos e.g the animal diversity, ..... actually i dont have the words to thank enough ... thank u so much
You are so very welcome! I'm glad my videos have helped understand your lectures better. Wishing you all the As!
I'm from India and this class was really helpful for bsc u know 😁👍 So I'm here to thankyou dude💖
You're so welcome! Keep on learning!
Touching on the conifer-pine relationship, are all conifers pines, or pines just one of the categories making up the phylum. I gots to know... thanks.
So "conifer" really refers to anything that is cone bearing, so pine trees are included as a "conifer". In /everyday life/ usually when someone says 'conifer' they are thinking of fir trees (like a Christmas tree, if you are familiar with those). Fir is also a type of conifer but they are not synonymous.
Can't find the link 😢
Scroll down and click on "More" in the description. Then at the bottom of the expanded box, it links all the videos linked in my video. Definitely take a peak, it's pretty cool!
I am watch your video. Are you a Teache of class ix . Thanks mem, I am Indian
Excellent, just what I was looking for. Thank you
You're very welcome, good luck!
Cheer~~~a large phylum that comprises the segmented worms, which include earthworms, lugworms, and leeches.😊
Yes! There's lots of other organisms in here, but I only have videos for the oligochaetes and polychaetes. I hope to make more of the other organisms one day!
hi mom! 🤗
There are some pretty big cephalopods out there
Man, imagine 100,000 years ago! Out current cephalopods have nothing on today's ones!
THANK YOUUUUUUU
Is that a nematode infested heart😨
They are! This is why it is so important to give dogs heartworm medication because heartworm is spread through mosquitos. If you live in a temperate climate that is being affected my climate change, you really have to do heartworm year round, not just during the summer.
@@ProfessorNewtoff That is truly gruesome!!
I wish you had a video on Phylum Nermatea.
Hopefully one day! I don't teach about them in my class and my RUclips was really only originally designed for my class but it's been so helpful for so many folks, I hope to make more!
If I could like this 100 times I would
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Good😊
Thank you so much
Your videos are literally such a blessing. Thank you for what you do!!
I really appreciate it, thank you!

Am having my test tomorrow....I'll hammer it Thank you professor 🔥🔥🔥🤩🤩😍😍
Well, did you? 😂
wow so much information within no time thank you so much
Thank you❤❤
Thank you so much for the video❤❤

I loved the explanation. It is very clear and easy to understand. Tomorro, I have my last quiz for the semester, and it is about gymnosperms. Thank you
I hope you did well on your quiz!
Thank you so much profesa.. I'm watching from Kenya and really happy for your work
Thank you i studied that too, phytoplanton, zooplankton, bentos and solaria.
Thank you so so much- I took plant pathology and although I really tried to enjoy it and do well, my professor for all her great virtues and knowledge had the thickest accent ever and went so fast it was hard to keep up. Thank you so so much for sharing this info on RUclips it is insanely helpful to have thorough and detailed info in a video format
You're so welcome and I'm glad it's been helpful!
you’re the best teacher ever
Please come tell my current students that :)
love the way how you explain things ... you are an academics savior ..between my zoo lectures and you ..sorry to say this but i would choose you🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
