Recipe that was invented during World War II
I mean, it’s so chocolatey it’s called blackout cake. That’s gotta tell you something.
Truthfully, I just assumed the blackout part of the title was from chocolate overload, but apparently this cake surfaced during the blackout drills of WWII in Brooklyn
140g unsalted butter, plus extra for the tins
100ml vegetable oil
140g buttermilk
100ml hot coffee, made with 1 tsp espresso powder
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
250g brown sugar
250g plain flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tsp baking powder
50g cocoa powder
FOR THE CUSTARD
250g sugar
500ml full-fat milk
140g dark chocolate
50g cornflour
I didn't add these 2 ingredients you and them to enhance the flavor of the chocolate.

I found the liquid sepatated from the mascarpone solid at the bottom of the container. Is it badand unusable?
To be honest I never came across this problem.
Mascarpone is actually very low in moisture compared to ricotta which contains a lovely whey. Because mascarpone is low in moisture, it is slower to spoil. If it hasn't taken on a bitter flavor or off color, it is fine to use
