Mr. Robot As Therapy: Disconnection, Integration, and the Multiplicity of Self
A deep dive into the psychology and profound therapeutic concepts found within Mr. Robot; a meticulously crafted love-letter to my all-time favorite TV series; a look at the Self through the lens of Buddhism, Family Systems theory, and (ab)normal psych.
(as therapy) is my attempt to bring complex topics surrounding psychology and therapy to people that they could most benefit. Since I believe that anchoring new ideas in the familiar is the best way to learn, most videos will likely be centered on explaining and elucidating on these subjects as they're portrayed in popular media.
The script for this video, alongside some of my other works, is available on my (new) blog: considerthisblog.sub...

I have Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), and I must say that Mr. Robot offers the most accurate portrayal of DID I've seen in Hollywood so far. It’s refreshing to see a media representation that handles the disorder with such care. DID is often misunderstood and rarely visible to those around us. In fact, most people with DID don’t show noticeable signs, and even close friends or family might not be aware when 'switching' between alters occurs. It takes trauma-informed therapists, who are specially trained, to truly identify and treat DID effectively. I'm grateful to the writers, actors, and creators of this show for their thoughtful work, which contributes to destigmatizing mental health conditions like DID. It’s important to approach this with nuance rather than the exaggerated portrayals often seen online. Let’s continue to support media that helps bring awareness and understanding to conditions that are so often hidden.

As a pursuing psychology student, i quite fond of Mr. Robot to be relatable and fascinating that shows how much complexity that brought Sam Esmail and Rami Malek to the character. I love every single aspect of it, it's my personal therapeutic section that brought me alive and keep me sane in terms of facing adversity. Elliot is by far one of the best character stories ive ever seen.

Thank you for this & for having the ability to download it. I've watched many a series twice. This one kills me every time. As someone with a SMI I found this to be powerful & therapeutic commentary. I'm not on substack/haven't explored it, but I hope you continue to make content here. No matter how infrequent.

Hi everyone. Lots of people asking for more content since I made this and then disappeared off the web for 4 years. Good news! I'm writing again, and you can follow my writing on my Substack, linked below. I hope to eventually make more videos in the future, but that depends on a lot of things (time, money, etc.). considerthisblog.substack.com/

Moved to tears and found your very Human and empathic take on how such a dark show can be so healing deeply cathartic. Thank you so much, I wish I could subscribe to you 100 times.💝

Im no different that most in the comments. It changed me. It sounds hyperbolic. But, it was the first time i ever saw myself on tv. A character i actually understood and see. And now they did the subject matter. Perfection. And of course the acting, directing, cinematography, score, casting, and production. Perfect in my opinion. The holy grail. If someone hasnt watched it. Do it. Every season is spectacular. But each season only gets better. And the end is perfect.

Sounds like hypno-therapy. Of course we are individuals. What’s strange is you not getting what that means. No longer able to be divided - that refers to time and space. Only one buddy. Meaning we exist as individuals in an ecosystem and biosphere no doubt - but as individual brains and bodies. Strange to think anyone would think it’s up for debate.

I think that it's necessary for us to go through trama and anger and destruction in order to understand healing and also not healing, the world is a balance of both dark and light anger and happyness good and evil and so on we the sons and daughters of balance

I totally understand what your saying, and exactly the part where you said "this can work for all of us". I had shallow knowledge about the psychological topics you mentions and that's exactly how I helped myself to make amends and not totally go insane. And that's why this show will always be my favorite, because I see myself at least on some fractional level. As a personal struggle, understanding and eventually healing. I can't thank you enough for making this video.

Mr robot is the first media ive watched where it feels like it gets me. I may not be elliot but i face his struggles. The addiction, anger, depression, the trauma. Its the show that i feel that truly understands that. The only thing that is comparable is the road by cormac Mccarthy. But even then its uncomparable
