Why You Didn't Like ... Furies
Ever feel like Netflix sometimes swaps quality for quantity?
Or ... perhaps they don't have a good "quality barometer." Whatever the reason, Furies is the latest example: more “French postcard” than “French John Wick.”
From Lyna’s overnight upgrade to Terminator, and Euro-fluff instead of chic, this revenge series is less thriller and more Netflix filler. I'll get into why Elie is the true MVP, offering the depth we desperately wanted from Lyna, as I cover wasted potential, cliffhanger frustration, and the ghost of what could have been.
Furies and its “just add Paris” revenge narrative is lost in translation.

Why You Liked ... Barbie
Просмотров 50114 дней назад
This isn’t your typical doll story. In 2023, Barbie brought more than just pink: she brought a clever, fun, and feisty look at the world we live in (and told the patriarchy where take its horses). From her origins as a German comic-strip doll with a very adult side, to inspiring a generation of “girls can be anything” dreams, Barbie has been more than just plastic for decades. Barbie takes on e...
Why You Liked ... Gen V

Are you tired of superhero shows that feel like they’ve run out of steam? Same, bro. Same. After The Boys season 3 left me a little emotionally… broken, I took a break. Then along came Gen V, which slapped some sense (and a lot of heart) back into the genre. Less world-ending threats, more relatable challenges like school drama, peer pressure, and friends that you’re not quite sure about. Gen V...
Why You Liked ... Dragon Age: Vows and Vengeance

Dragon Age: Vows and Vengeance is a podcast that’s way more than background noise. It’s like the Witcher story collections but with a Dragon Age twist. Side quests actually matter and every character gets their time to shine. I'm talking character depth, epic side quests, and how Vows and Vengeance borrows from Absolution to make us care about every assassin, mage, and thief along the way. Expe...

Did Salem’s Lot (2024) deserve its lukewarm reception, or did the Internet get it wrong again? Spoilers, but this vampire flick is more than just a CliffsNotes version of King’s classic. Spoiler 2: It’s not a Xerox of the book. It’s a two-hour vampire speed-run that skips the boring bits and cranks up the tension with hypnotized kids and crucifixes in morgues. With a stellar cast, clever use of...

From haunted houses to haunted lives, Shining Vale teases us with supernatural thrills and dark comedy but falls headfirst into the tired trope of making women the villains of their own stories. Maybe there’s a hidden group of women who’ve never been told, “it’s all in your head.” Hold Your Breath seems determined to reach that very niche audience-where gaslighting is the main event. Set in 1930s Oklahoma, the film presents itself as a psychological horror, but it quickly spirals into a frustrating reliance on outdated mental health tropes and “unreliable women” storytelling. The biggest issue for the film is that it’s being compared to the one that came out in the 70’s? That version was legitimately scary with not the same level of special effects. Also cutting an hour off hurt some with character development and story telling. Just my thoughts on this. I liked this version but was not as Goff as the original

It's so hard for any product to live in the shadow of something great. I enjoy videogames as well, and remakes/remasters plague that industry - not all are warranted, but what it really highlights is that the thing we all remember well was pretty epic at the time. Although, problematically, Dorothy can never go home again - I don't think the people wanting Legacy of Kain are going to be happy about the remake 🤣

omg I actually watched this one! it was so great. so fun (that dance battle was FUCKING AMAZING). I'm pretty sure I shed a few tears? because, fuck it's hard being a female sometimes. My mother in law hated it. My Dad liked it - both of these responses surprised me.

I remember when it came out, my company's morning stand-up had a huge range of responses, but they weren't as surprising as yours - the older men typically didn't like it or had an active disinterest in seeing it (this latter more prevalent - the fear that it was going to rub them the wrong way). But it's just ... fun!

Pacing: I wanted at least an other half hour for the story to breathe Casting: I enjoyed the cast, and didn't mind the sex or race changes at all Effects: while I appreciated that the effects were kept to a minimum, and mostly in-camera, what effects there were had a bit much of a heavy handed look. I don't need crosses to glow like Sting when goblins are about, or vampires to fly or be pushed away from them like by a strong wind. atmosphere: I loved the atmosphere when it was given time to exist. location change for the vampire killing scene: Though I appreciate the cleverness of it, I was not a fan. Keep it in the B&B where King had it, or in the Marstien cellar where Hooper had it. Overall better than the 2004 miniseries with Rob Lowe, even though that one was more faithful to the book, but still does not approach as good as the 1979 original miniseries to my pallet.

Id like to rewatch to count their lines, but id rather not rewatch!!😬😬 Theyre onscreen for 90% of the movie, and it seemed like they didnt even say f you impressively!! Them being the same and doing the same thing for a living made it so they pretty much communicated with winks and nods after they got over the f yous!!😂😂 They kind of did that in oceans too, but at least we had more people and things they had to talk about!! This movie had one kid, and that was it pretty much!! I think this script was about 10-15 pages long!!😂😂🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

The instigators was pretty good though imo!! The matt damon, casey affleck movie!! Thats kinda what i was hoping for!! They actually tried to flesh out their characters, and gave them some fairly good stuff to work with!! I wonder if the itv people just got all the rights to oceans stuff or something cuz doing those 2 movies back to back with 4 people from oceans seems a little too coincidental!! Or maybe it was a complete fluke!!??🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️😂😂

My favorite Uwe Boll Trash Adaptation was BloodRayne, a movie based on a game that I had actually played quite a lot of. Becuase, you know, sexy vampires and the 90's. It was so bad it was rumored Ben Kingsley asked to have his name stricken from the credits. I have no idea if that is true or not but it makes for great copy! I have yet to see Titan, I don't have the fortitude for that after The Union 🤣 I'd argue in this movie JK isn't used to the potential I know he can reach; he gets a few quips but feels mostly like branded stage dressing. Contrast to his vibe as J Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man and it's kind of night and day. If you do put your hand in the fire that's The Union, my strongest recommendation would be to do it after two vinos (your choice) because you'll be in a better frame of mind to roll with it 🤣

On the topic of cheap tricks and world building, what's your take on an author proxy character? I'm referring to the side kick or guide or elder that joins the protagonist/party/cast who basically serves as the author's proxy to the reader, able to explain the world around them to the protagonist. It's a trope I'm reluctant to use but also one that I find stupidly effective - and see used a lot, especially in fantasy or sci-fi where the world needs building. Do any of your works rely on method? Thoughts?

    • @parrydigm
      @parrydigm 2 месяца назад

I feel like it's a crutch, but it's one of the more effective ones as long as it's not like that fucken scene in Alien Resurrection where the guy stuck in the goo is given a 10-minute monologue to explain the movie 🤣 I don't do this, because I think people know when there's a magic lantern or whatever explaining how shit works, but if you have people just naturally vibing in dialogue that can explain it, then IMO that's how to do it. This would skirt the edge of your guide system, and marry it to the as-and-when discovery I use. I guess my real problem with the guide/magic explaining latern method is that if I have to use that, I feel I've already failed the reader by not giving them the world through action and/or dialogue.

It's too bad this movie is much like The Force Awakens as in The Force wicans now it's pretty much scoffed at. This movie has a beautiful look to it but it's not scary that Haley and monster itself is very weak and doesn't do much at all and the whole movie is a greatest hits with dialogue and scenes stolen from all the other movies including Prometheus. Just give us a true sequel to aliens and make it like top gun Maverick

"My most favorite cyberpunk movie next to.. well.. my other most favorite cyberpunk movies.." Brillaint! I watched The Creator last year and was blown away by the sheer scope, scale, and production value of this piece, and was appreciative of its subtext message - which is the amount of damage and harm a war inflicts on all those wrapped up in it. And it's often the innocents that pay the dearest. It's a message the resonates hard in today's geo-political climate. The other thing I think it touches is the question of what defines sentience. At what point does programming that acts like sentiency actually become sentient? A few years back Google fired an engineer because he had become convinced that company's AI chatbot had a soul and was sentient. I find this particular look at that question was as poignant and well written as just about any that I'd viewed.

We are vibing along here, totally agree with all points, no notes. I remember the Google engineer story; I don't think Google handled that well because it was in their interests for the machine to not be sentient. We may never know if it was (and current research suggests it wasn't), but the shuttering of that is an important milestone on our journey of machine enslavement should it become sentient. The Creator isn't afraid to highlight this (all while entertaining with great casting, acting, action, and FX).

Great overview! After I saw this movie I told everyone I know to stop what they were doing and go watch it. Besides a fantastic protagonist and well choreographed fight scenes I loved to see the franchise really returning to its roots. And when I recommended the movie to my daughter, the first thing she messaged me while watching it was "NOTHING HAD BETTER HAPPEN TO THE DOG!" :) Trachtenberg knows his audience.

I love Rebel Moon Directors Cuts. Amazing. 9/10. My issues are only with a few pacing and logical issues i guess you’d say? I don’t think an example of pacing is needed for you to understand my slight disappointment. I loved the pacing for the most part but sometimes(the fields for example) I think Zach could have trimmed it down just a tad. 1 example of the minor logical issues is the asian lady vs the spider woman. The logical issue is why the rest didn’t help when a child was at risk. Even though that bothered me a bit, i still understood what Zach was going for and I liked it overall despite my minor annoyance. And what Zach was going for is, this is this characters chance to prove to the team why shes useful. Knowing she was a great warrior by reputation alone, the team decided to watch instead of intervene believing shed succeed because they wanted to see her skills first hand. Thats why I like that scene overall even though I had a slight issue with them not helping, I understand in a relative and narrative sense why its necessary even though its not logical. Remember, movies are escapism. They often take liberties against was is known and believed to tell its narrative. I like how Snyder always challenges the norm. Thats why I’m a fan. Its understandable for viewers who only look at things logically to not like Snyders style. After all most people think relativity is real, fixed and logical. But it’s not. This is one example of course. Theres a few others im sure you guys know that I wont get into in this short review. To close this review, Rebel Moon is a daring two part film that challenges the norm and allows Snyder to go wild. I love this movie.

It's a totally fair perspective, there are a few movies where the director is trying something new or daring to explore a new beach head. I guess my vibe here is that there are better ways - for example, in the sword/monster scene, the rest of the team could have been trapped, or some rule of law meant it was single combat, or... something. It's just weird to see them all hanging out at the back 🤣 A thing I picked up from your review here is that the Director's Cut might be the go-to. Would you say that's a better take on the movie than the OG release? A really good example of DCs being better is the Total Recall movie (2012 edition). It was incomprehensible as a theatrical release but the DC absolutely redeemed it because it had more time to spend on important moving parts.

I'm with you on the amazing and challenging part. I also think that Nemesis going alone after Harmada already helps to strongly charaterize her as a mother who lost her child. And her killing Harmada is very sad actually. I love the harvest scene in part 2 because it's the moment where the wary villagers learn to trust the heroes. Plus this scene is all about life and highly needed before such a long final and bloody fight. ;)

I don't see why I should love action movies more or less than very deep characters/pitch movies... I simply love both. What is standing out for me, as a huge Rebel Moon fan-, is the lore. Of course I enjoyed having a Star Wars like movie for adults full of blood, gore and action and a simplist story for kids (sorry Star wars fans, I don't like that franchise at all). But the lore really got me. From the costumes to the Kalies (you know the slave ladies who operate as ship motors) there is just SO MUCH interesting stuff. Stuff we'll probably learn more along the way. And the more I watch Rebel Moon (yes severall times already), the more I think this lore deeply compelling. So yes the scenarion is thin. But that never stopped people to ruch to see Star Wars or -worse- any movies by Roland Emmerich that are just ridiculous. The character development? I didn't feel like something was missing; even knowing little we know enough to get empathy. And please don't forget the nice steampunk vibe, the great costumes or the amazing music composed by Tom Holkenborg. So, in my opinion of course, because we all have our own tastes, it's more than enjoyable. It's freaking good. Can I have a video called "Why you really like... Rebel Moon" now please? 😉

Oh man, I really like the time and thought you put into this reply. Quick Q: do you think Part 2 could be the key to unlocking my inner Rebel Moon fan? Honestly I'm still hunting for someone who's seen it, so I'm turning to the expert here - what's the verdict?

@@parrydigm You know, it's almays the haters we hear the most. now, it seems the lovers are starting to speak for themselves too. Times they are changing 😄So it seems interesting to give my personal take on this. I can't tell, as it all depends on YOUR own tastes in the end. Does it become completely different? No. But you have the back stories of the other heroes (Titus, Milius, Nemesis and Tarak), you have finally more than a glimpse of the kalies/ship motors (and man, I want to see their rebellion so bad LOL), you'll know why it was so easy for Tarak to tame the griffin, more lore overall, Balisarius and Noble are getting even worse (Palpatine is like Jar-Jar Binks compared to them), you have more than hour of total freaking epic battle (and yes Jimmy the robot will be more useful in the second part though I loved his very poetic introspection moments in first movie)... So now you have to watch it, just to get the full experience especially as part one and two are not really separate movies but one movie I think. And a rebellion will rise :D I hope that will be the key to opening your inner Rebel Moon fan, but even if it is not, at least you'll have more scope to decide what you like and what you don't. ☺Director's cut versions of course (no need to even watch the shorter versions). I always watched the 2 long versions in a row and for me it was the key. And now I'm even kind of obsessed with this :P

Great overview and I honestly think you're almost too generous lol. I love big action set pieces and even I cringed at the awful character development and story twlling. The problem is there's an entire franchise of movies with over-the-top action and memorable (if trite) characters in The Fast and Furious movies. Rebel Moon aint no Fast and Furious lol.

Oh man you just gave me an idea to do a why-you-like on Hobbs and Shaw (arguably the best F&F movie, even if it doesn't carry the title). You're exactly right, there are some absolutely superb action movies with memorable characters ... and Rebel Moon doesn't stick the landing on that. I do think I should watch part 2, but ... neither the body or spirit is willing and I think to do it justice I should be in the right headspace to give it a fair shake.

It sounds like a good one! 'We're the real evil/monsters' is actually one of my fav themes ever, so I'll probably enjoy this. It's been an Age since I watched the first movies, and by the time I get around to watching this I will have forgotten any spoilers (thank you, mushy brain! lol). I'll add Prey to my list as well because that looks fun. Youngest is a big horror fan, might be time to introduce her to SF horror?

Oooo if the youngest hasn't seen these but loves horror in general, def. time to dust them off for a home cinema viewing. I saw Alien when I was 13, which we could argue was an example of bad parenting, but I'd say it's one of the best forms of resilience training I've had 🤣 I'm hanging out for the Blu-ray release; Romulus was one of the few movies I've seen where I immediately wanted to re-watch it (Blade Runner 2049 would be the other one from recent times).

Started watching this but stopped, because I'm waiting for it to come to the small screen before I watch, though I'm definitely interested, and didn't want to possibly spoil. But I will say of what I saw so far, best production value of the vids so far. You're definitely ramping up the quality - nicely done. And 100% agreed.. I've seen *all* th Alien movies including all of the AvP movies, and for my money, there have been only 2 true entries to the franchise before this one, lol.

Thanks for the comments on quality, honestly it was watching one of your videos from about two weeks ago that gave me some of the inspiration for the structure and format! I wonder if the people who agree Alien[|s] are the best two would be the same ones who feel Han was best when he shot first 🤣

Aw thank you 🙂 I first saw Alien[|s] when I was a zygote and loved them for the spectacle, but there was 100% something deeper I grew to love with each rewatch (and I dust them off about annually). Even though the alien in the first movie is a dude in a rubber suit, it's still one of the most horrific movies out there, it's aged super well and IMO because of the themes, not just the spectacle 🙂

You know I'm a diehard 4thewords fan! They JUST changed their subscription model, which means there is a free option now though it's very restricted compared to the paid tiers. They have us heaps of warning about increased prices and are always so communicative with their community - made sure we had lots of time to convert crystals into subscription time before the changeover too, which means I have approx 3 years paid for in advance now 🤣 As a non-Mac user, I'm so grateful to Atticus and the team there as well, always bringing out new content and helping make books even better. There are so many great options around these days!

That's so cool about 4thewords. I think having a free 'taster' is totally the way to go, no one really cares if it's restrictive as long as it lets them see what their money will buy. Naturally I'd like to see a perpetual license model for it 🤣 but wishing won't make it so.

Great clarity piece on the differences between the two. I'd also say it's a fair characterization of the differences between plotters and panters. Plotters have the outline written down from A to Z before they've put a single word of the story down. Panters have this incredible story bursting in their head they're dying to get down on paper without even a vaguest idea of how to get to the end or even where the end is.
