Back to Base Building | How to Do Zone 2 Training
In this video, I shared with you, my "base building cycle" as I was getting back into my running routine and looking to prepare my body for another training block coming up.
I talked about few ideas to follow during base building and I think for new runners and runners who just came off and finished your training block, low intensity run will be a great way to help get you into running.
I leave some references below which regard to the heart rate calculation and idea of different heart rate method. I use heart rate in my easy run and I find it suitable to me, of course there are other method out there work for many runners, so never restrict yourself, study and give it a try if you want.

If you feel tired, you can take a rest, like after a big workout, a long day, or after a sleepless night, there no rules on how many rest day you can take, so just take one when you need

You really gotta get the coros heart rate monitor bro! I also use the coros pace 2 and the reading can be very inaccurate to the point where it becomes very discouraging🤣. I've read other people's experience that it's because the cadence data gets mixed up with the heart rate data and thus the coros watch thinks your heart rate is like 15-20 bpm higher than it really is. Also, judging by your sub-2 hm, your zone 2 easy runs should theoretically be in between 6:00-7:00 (though depending your current fitness level and weather condition plays a big part as well). I really encourage you to get the strap as it really has become a game changer for me!

I have a question and noone talks about this. When you start out with zone 2 training what should be your cadance? Because in NO WAY I can keep 160-170 steps/min when running at 8:45min/km (or 14.06 min/mile). Everytime I tried to pick up cadance, doesn't matter if I almost stood still, the 'jumping' pattern spiked my heartrate to 170+.
160 - 170spm is a good number to make sure you maintain a good form, of course when running slow, our form will change a bit compared to running fast, so in your zone 2 training, you can think about shortening your strides length, the distance of each step you take, to maintain an efficient cadence A good way to practice is running in place and following a metronome beat, it helps to build your muscle memory translate into your run later

my zone 2 is about 9:48/km with some walks here and there. just started running few weeks ago. zone 2 running is boring but super fun if you have someone with you to chat with.

Hi.. im 40 years old from kuching and started zone 2 training in may at similar pace to you 9’30”/km.. i only have time to run in d morning before work for about 25-30mins depending on trafic traffic and weather conditions.. after 3 months, ive improved my zone 2 pace around 7’45”/km.. the goal is to be able to run zone 2 in about 5’/km -ish pace.. good luck n all the best to your running journey

Actually admire your strictness to zone 2 HR. Has to be said, 9.28 pace (your 3rd KM) is practically walking!! 😉😮. And that’s not a dig, very impressed at your persistence at keeping the HR low!! Great stuff Russ!! 😊

for me at least, zone 2 is 'use it or lose it'. if i don't train zone 2 for 2 weeks, i'll lose it, fast... (i'm using garmin's LTHR btw)
I' using garmin too. After i updated the app, my track/route and map not displayed anymore in the app. Do you know about this?

how do you like the velocity nitro 3 so far?
So far so good, I used it a lot in my easy run and strides, very reliable daily trainer, I really like it's outsole, super grippy and durable, almost 100k in still remain fresh

I’ve ran for a month and half and I hurt my knee. I’m not overweight or anything so it’s really annoying. I don’t understand how I’m this out of shape at my age. I can do like 3 miles with maf training and it’s like 13 min/mile. I just liked it because it was fun simple way to be outside

Yes it is true to size, suggest to go up 1/2 size, the overall fit is a little tight in the front toe

I dunno whether my MAF training working well or not since I logged 8km on average everyday for 10 days straight since my body feel fresh everyday and doesnt scream I need to rest for a day. I'm one year into running and my previous weekly mileage was around 40km with speedwork and workouts. Decided to do base training because I felt I hit a wall that cant be surpass. I wonder if I need to take a day off for my body to recover or I am good to do continuous running for as long as I can
From my experience, speedwork and workout are required in the training structure to see improvement, and you can understand your training like a periodization, maf training is the first phase of the training structure, it take you 4 -5 weeks to build up you base with easy run and increase volume, then second phase is the sharpening phase, where you do speed work and tempo run to build your speed and practice race effort, and then is your tapering phase where reduce volume and stay fresh for running the race, lastly after your race, is your recovery phase That one period of complete training, you'll go through new cycle again and again to continue make improvement

about ur MAF training, how long have you do it, and how long you planed to doing it
I previously do only maf training for 3month before I added in any speed session, now I always do maf intensity run meaning that major of my training were easy run with 1 - 2 tempo/interval session I think if you just start, you can have a 2 month plan where you start to do maf training and increase the volume by 10% every week gradually You can start from plan below! Mon-10min Tue-Rest Wed-10min Thu-Rest Fri-Rest Sat-15min Sun-Rest

please close your mouth and breathe through your nose. mouth breathing can cause health problem

That too much stress for your body! Try to reduce the intensity of your workout and keep more session on easy effort
