very excited you're watching this show! it's one of my all-time favorites, i love seeing people watch it for the first time. and i know you said you already talked this out with your discord and they gave suggestions and you ultimately decided just to do what you were going to do to begin with, but a) i do still firmly recommend the sub, the dub is notoriously bad whereas the japanese VAs are all incredibly talented singers, and b) i really do think you'll have a better experience of the show with a fansub that color-codes the song lyrics; there can be a lot to keep track of during the revue scenes, and the color-coding makes it all much easier to follow at a glance

Actually, Wakana is _taller_ than 180cm. In the original, he cut himself off before he managed to tell his height entirely, but here in the dub it was not presented correctly. If he were only 180cm tall, that would mean that he is only 16cm taller than Marin, and it seems impossible that their height difference is so small.

Throughout the Revue of Desire, Junna exclusively attacks from ambush, hiding among mannequins; she doesn't trust her talent enough to actually step into the spotlight, which is kind of a requirement if you want to be a star. So this first episode was certainly something. When I first watched it I knew absolutely nothing about the show and I'd say it was probably the single most surprising first episode I'd seen. Your confusion is warranted and it's actually one of my favorite parts of watching people react to this and since it's the first episode you aren't really expected to "understand" that much. Also you don't need to worry too much about missing some stuff it's inevetable as this show is probably the most densest one I've seen in terms of the amount of detail, but that also adds so much value to rewatching it. It's the first episode so it doesn't go particularly deep yet, but there's a couple of things I want to note: Firstly the show has a very surreal style, as in many of the things that happen make no physical sense, but rather are visual/physical representations of story elements and character emotions (such as how tokyo tower appears in Karens dream and also in the underground stage), which I know is not everyones thing, but I think it's a really interesting approach to storytelling that this show does exceptionally well. So when in upcoming episodes there are stand out visual elements, you could try to think what they might represent (as if there wasn't already enough to pay attention to in the show). These visual elements add so much extra depth to the story and characters, which really makes you appreciate them on a rewatch. The more surreal elements start to make more sense (kinda) the more you watch it. The first episode didn't really have that many noteworthy things to talk about in depth (other than some spoilery stuff) since it mostly introduces the story elements, but in later episodes I'll probably go slightly more in depth if I do comment. Another thing that Isn't exactly about the show. I mean it kind of is, but kind of isn't. Is that there is a manga of this called "Revue Starlight Overture" which is actually a prequel story that delves a bit more into the characters. I read it recently and it was surprisingly excellent, and really worth a read for any fan of the show. It doesn't have any spoilers either so you can read it at any point you want (if you're interested that is). It's also pretty short, being only 10 chapters long. The manga is actually written by Kanata Nakamura who also wrote the lyrics for the revue insert songs. Which conveniently leads to my next point. And that is the lyrics of the insert songs being actually very worthy to read on their own. Since it's almost impossible to read the lyrics while watching the show and paying attention at the same time, I'd suggest at some point you go read them on your own on the wiki as they are another detail that adds extra depth to the story. At this point it seems like I'm just giving you homework for watching a show which is quite funny, but it shows how much detail and effort this show packs into its episodes. Also all of this stuff is completely optional, think of it like sidequests in games (but like... maybe comparable to particularly good sidequests?), so I don't want you to feel like im trying to force you into doing all this, it's just a suggestion if you're particualrly interested. Also Karens gay bestie, not the black haired bestie who is probably also kinda gay, but the one with almost black hair is called Mahiru. That didn't really explain much did it? Anyway you'll get the names eventually. Most of the main cast to get a decent amount of screentime. I apologise if my comment seems really long, but I really like this show and want to share stuff that is at least slightly below the surface level. If I comment (and I probably will) on future episodes they'll also probably be kinda long so sorry if that's a bother.

you were indeed correct, but at what cost............... 26:41 don't worry literally everyone makes that mistake the first time. it's inevitable regarding sub vs dub (again), i wouldn't mind it if you decided to switch but i would still recommend sub since 1. junna's voice in the dub is terrible, i hate it. no insult to the VA i'm sure she's great but it does not fit junna at all 2. a bit later in the show, there's a particular scene which has my favourite voice work. literally ever, i think (except maybe a monogatari character that you won't see until 2035, SHANNON). the dub version of it isn't bad but it's nowhere near as good and i think first time watchers deserve to hear the original because the scene feels a little hollow to me without it. but like. a single character and a single scene are sort of minor things. so it's not a huge deal either way

You should also check the original Japanese dub -- many voice actors did their job perfectly there, particularly the one for Marin.

Revue starlight is one of my absolute favorites (especially the movie). Though sadly I don't see it ever getting picked because of how unpopular it is. At the end of the day though, it's only fair that the shows that most want to watch get picked.

I'm tempted to vote for Whisper Me A Love Song but given the last two episodes have been delayed indefinitely since its two week delay meant it lost its TV slots (I've heard rumours that the studio hope to get the remaining episodes out in September but I don't know the validity of those) I've gone with Jellyfish for now because it was a pretty enjoyable show (Though it can be pretty hard on copyright claims. Shouldn't be an issue for you as you do timer reactions) One series that I just finished that I enjoyed quite a bit was Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road ('Executioner and her Way of Life' to give it its English title) I was pretty fond of the plot and characters. It is a little gory (I only mention this because I noticed you dropped Highschool of the Dead partially because of the gore) but not overly so, closer to the realm of Lycoris Recoil (A bit worse, because it's definitely a more gory show than that but not to the level of HotD)

Just came across this anime now, mid-2024, on a friend's recommendation - and I've never been so impacted by an anime, by a series, by a book, by music, by *anything* in my life. Days after ending my initial run-through, and I break out in tears just thinking about the story, the characters... I also wear glasses, so I share your struggle there. There's just so much to empathize with, so much meaning that becomes personal and integrated into my own experiences, even as I was watching it... and whenever they ask "did I reach them?", and I realize the writer was asking the same question about his audience, obviously putting his all into it. And boy, did it. There was so much meaning, so much art. I used to say "Babylon 5" and "The Last Airbender" are my favorite series, and while I love them and so many others... this is next-level. Whole different league. Never thought I'd find something like this in my life, much like Kousei thinking finding love was impossible for him. Not knowing my own blindness. Still trying to adjust to the new perspectives and colors this story has given to me. I'm going to have to start a journal just to make sense of it all. Anyway, in the show's aftermath I have been searching for more info, randomly coming across your reaction here, and seeing how my reaction was the same, felt compelled to write a note of solidarity. We're all connected indeed - in the anime, they through the music, and in this life, we through the anime. Tears are beautiful things. May you never be ashamed of them. Revel in having a good heart.

When I watched this episode for the first time, I couldn't help but notice that one of the girls that Claire poured tea on had a slight blush on her face afterwards. It's my belief that she came to understand why Rae enjoys getting bullied so much.

Hey... No kink shaming. That's not cool. :( But for real, there's a lot in Firefly's trailer. On the surface, and for those who only look at the surface, it's easy to see this trailer as "lackluster." Once you actually look at the imagery, and the words, it starts painting the picture. The music especially. The near-whimsical strings at the end almost seem out of place.

Analesa and Adin absolutely destroyed this (and the Fireflies cover they did which has absolutely been playing on repeat in the background while I write this. Look at em, slaying the drums and homeboys vocal chords. Pop off yall) 3. Be normal about Ruan Mei, tell her she was trippin sure but don't be an ass about it. Girl just thinks life's interesting and wants to understand it more, kinda like another bug person we know. 4. Also just adding my perspective but know some folks feel stuff like the ending bit with TB joining up with FF at the hangout and such does tend to come off as being reductive when it comes to FF as a character, her role and who she is, making her to them at least come off as "the Waifu" more than... well everything that she is. Again I won't say too much on it here for brevity but I do think this is a very real thing that can happen with characters, i'd very much so argue Kafka is a big victim of "audience drools too much" syndrome and its something that can bother me too. However I do also think that's something we often are putting on a character ourselves more than the game/audience at large and therefore WE end up reducing them more than anything else. FF's connection to TB, her spot, the astral express and so on are a massive part of her story, not for the sake of being a ship but because her entire story is about finding a real life and identity to call her own, to make the choices that define her on her own terms, to not be just a clone, or SAM, or a Stellaron hunter, or anything else except FIREFLY. Her finding people to love and care about, whether romantic or platonic, is a massive half of her story and I don't think that is reductive, and in fact I'd rather argue that its quite additive instead. If its a romantic thing and does become something then awesome just strengthens everything she's fighting for and striving to be, a person who is living her life on her terms how she wants to, chasing not the orders of her majesty, or the script, but the things she loves... and if its platonic... the same but with less smooches. In the end I see this all as a positive rather than a negative... In the same way I wouldn't ever consider Kiana and Mei's relationship, or Bronya and Seele's a negative and instead a notable positive that adds to them as characters. Yes some people are REALLY fucking annoying shippers, I'm a RWBY fan... I'm ACCUTELY AWARE. And yes certain people with regards to Firefly can be doing FAR too much, (hence my Ruan Mei bit) but in the end, that is a minority of loud people, and ya can't let that ruin what is otherwise and absolutely incredible character. Hell forgive me if I'm being too much with her... its kinda just my style, speed, what is funny to me and how I show affection to fiction women hahaha. Anyway, talked way too much. Did not expect a video, but it turned out great!

I'm conviced that Sparkle is just trolling, while at the same time helping our characters develop, after all her whole thing is being a support character for the main characters from the background.

Apparently the type 5 was concept art for Firefly, which might mean they were all concept art... Also, Firefly was floating in space for a very long time, probably hundreds or more years, probably in stasis, and as far as I know they all suffered from entropy loss symdrome, so they may have died from that if they survived the war... Hopefully that's not the case.
