"Open Fire" — A Salute to Johnny Mathis
Quite a few decades ago as a preteen, while trifling through my parents' record collection, I discovered a masterpiece of an album by Johnny Mathis that has stayed with me since: "Open Fire, Two Guitars" (1959). Mathis is one of my earliest musical influences, and it's always a treat to tip my hat to this incredible talent and national treasure.
This Mathis-inspired take of "Open Fire" (Leiber & Stoller) is one of the highlights from a 2024 0928 concert in the Hamptons at LTV Studios, an extraordinary facility and concert series operated by wonderful folks. And what a pleasure it is to collaborate with:
Jane Hastay (piano),
Peter Martin Weiss (bass), and
Cook Broadnax (drums).

Don't Misunderstand NCJF 2022

In 2022, a COVID resurgence prevented the North Carolina Jazz Festival from having its normal grand festival gathering. Instead, artists were invited to present via online streaming for the NCJF audience. What a pleasure it was to trek up to NYC, step on the Django Jazz Club stage with these brilliant and sensitive musicians to record this gem, a Gordon Park's songwriting masterpiece. Rossano S...

😍😍 Dreamy!!!
Very smooth indeed ❤
Thank you Steve, and your brilliant trio of assembled friends.!
WOW! How have I been a jazz and R&B fan all of these years, a native Washingtonian and (finally) getting back to Mr. Henry's and missed this AMAZING talent? I just linked to the Henry's social media pages, and found in photos Steve Washington. I have been listening all evening. Can't wait for my husband and I to get back to Thursday jazz night, and hopefully see you in concert.
What a lovely message. I certainly hope to cross paths someday soon. Please say "hi" when that time comes (thinking positively, lol). Cheers!
Gorgeously sung version of this great song in a ravishing arrangement. As a former double-bass player, great to hear the bass so beautifully featured.
So cool and soothing. Hope to see you live one of these days 😎👍🏽💙
Hey buddy. Don't be a stranger. Keep swinging!!!
You have a great voice. Keep going.
Thank you kindly. And thanks for listening! Bacharach Forever!
The jazzy soulful and seductive side of Steve and his friends
Steve is a great fan of Dionne Warwick as I am....no wonder he performs this song. Wish you all the very best with your musical career, bro !!
Yes, Dionne Warwick & Johnny Mathis were the two voices that first captured my young imagination. Others followed, but those two were the first. Thank you kindly for the good wishes! Should we cross paths, please stop me and say "hi."
@@stevewashington4372 I certainly will my friend. I would never walk on by 😊
Excellent cover of this classic Steve. The band is super matched by your vocal performance. Well done. Take care.
I have seen Steve posting comments on various Dionne Warwick clips...obviously, he's a fan like I am...but I didn't know that he has an amazing singing voice. You go, Steve !!
Thank you, kindly, sir. Yes. Big Dionne fan here, since I first discovered her Scepter label, Bacharach produced albums among my folks' records in the late 60s. Also adore Mathis, Bennett, Nancy Wilson among others. And the gent who made this song famous, the great Brook Benton, is on the list, too. Cheers!
This guy is a great singer. Doesn't sound like the same MacArthur Park Richard Harris made famous. Is this a different song with the same title ? Anyone?
Hey William. Many thanks. This is the middle section of that epic composition. I wish I could claim to be the first to think about doing it as a stand alone piece. But both Tony Bennett (1969) and Dionne Warwick (1972) did so long before. Check out those versions when you get a chance. Both quite special.
Sooo smooth. This is my kinda music. Bravo, Steve Washington!
No you the eff you didn't !!! OMG This was good.
