Wait… What?!?! Luke 12:35-53

It’s great to be interested in Eschatology (the study of End Times), but Jesus didn’t give us passages like Luke 12:35-48 so we could obsess over the timing, but so that we’d be busy doing His work until He comes. He follows that command with a very strange statement, indeed: “I have come to bring division.” How do we reconcile this with all His promises of peace? Find out in this week’s message.

Ask, seek, knock. It seems so easy, doesn't it? Just tell Jesus what you want and expect Him to deliver. But what happens when we don't get what we want? How do we reconcile the reality that God sometimes say no with the promises made by Jesus in Luke 11:5-13? Join Pastor James as he helps us understand this important passage.

Please listen to the whole thing - even if it takes a couple of sessions! This is the longest sermon I have ever preached, though I didn't know it when I started the message that morning. I could have split this into two messages, but the most logical place to break it would have been to leave people under conviction that worry is sin (and it is!!!) without giving them the hope and freedom that comes from the instructions of Christ on how to defeat worry, anxiety, and fear. There is no quick fix to any addiction, and worry is a powerful addiction. Nonetheless, there is freedom in the words of Jesus here in Luke 12. Thank you for taking the time to listen all the way through. I don't think you'll regret it - but if you do, don't worry about it. :o)

I think because you limited this teaching to Exodus 21:1-11 only, you're missing a lot of what the Bible has to say about slavery. All the rules your discussed only applied to Hebrew indentured servants. You did a pretty good job of talking about those (with one exception I'll get to later), but again, these are laws that only applied to your fellow Hebrews. And Hebrews could not be enslaved. As you noted, they had to be released after serving or 6 years. But you also said, "permanent bondage is strictly forbidden" and "I know of no passage where God condones a lifetime of slavery. It is always for a period of time". And here is where you're painting with to broad a brush unfortunately. Permanent lifelong chattel slavery is in fact condoned in the Bible as it turns out. Go to Leviticus 25:44-46 which says; "As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you. You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their clans that are with you, who have been born in your land, and they may be you property. You may bequeath them to you sons after you to inherit as a possession forever. You may make slaves of them, but over your brothers the people of Israel you shall not rule, one over another ruthlessly" This is chattel slavery plain and simple. And this is the Bible condoning it. Owning people as property for their entire lives, along with any children born to them. I got interested in this topic years ago and dove in deep. It does get a little complicated and you're right that you have to look at things in context for sure. But at the time the Pentateuch was written, the two most common ways to become a slave were to be captured in war, or to be born into it. And it was permanent. Children were born into permanent slavery in the Bible. So I hope that helps with your request for a verse regarding permanent lifelong slavery in the Bible. It is in fact there. It turns out that the Bible is only against lifelong slavery for the Hebrews, but not the foreigners when you look into it. I know I was surprised. With one exception which you noted. A Hebrew man could choose to become a lifelong slave. The whole ear piercing thing you talked about (and I've never known a pastor that actually had his ear pierced because of this. Pretty cool Pastor James!). But if you read Exodus 21:3-6 more closely it really doesn't say what you seem to think it does. Or at least how you portrayed it broadly. "If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free. But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free, then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life." This is not a situation where the Hebrew servant so loves his master that he decides he never wants to leave. This is the Hebrew servant that can leave at the end of his 6 years of service, but in doing so would have to leave behind his wife and children who belong to the master for life. Agreeing to become a lifelong "servant" is the only way the man can stay with his family. It's not surprising that many, or most, chose to stay permanently. This is what men should do. Not abandon their family to lifelong slavery and move on alone, but to stay with them forever. So I think it's less about how good a master this owner was, and more about a man not wanting to abandon his family. My only two critiques of this sermon. Which I did in fact enjoy Pastor James. Thank you.
