Independent Off Grid Retreat
Канада
Добавлен 14 мар 2021
My name is Jeff. If your interested in independence off grid, love nature, cabin building, and solar projects then this is for you. I like the concept of a minimalist lifestyle with modern integrations where necessary, self reliance, the ability to know I can rely on and maintain myself without any outside influence.
I’m building a full size solar system. DIY Off Grid water system. And I’d like to build my own septic system. I’m an electrican by trade. So prepare for success and failures.
On my off grid property I currently have a trailer setup on blocks, which I use for showering. A 200w solar system with a 1000w inverter. I am building a small portion of a future larger 1.5 story cabin, a place to stay in the winters. Watch as I build and add upgrades to the off grid retreat.

Off Grid Cabin | First Night in the Cabin A Success
Thank you. Very helpful info. I've made a few liters of hooch over the years but my gear is no where near what you have. Question: You mixed to get oxygen in to start the yeast. I didn't know about that. I thought oxygen was bad for fermentation. If it helps I wonder about using an aquarium bubbler??? also I always wondered if it would be better to premix tubro yeast packet with say a liter of water before add to the sugar solution to it gets dissolved in better.
@@2nostromo I have read about others using bubblers. Also heard of people stirring occasionally. Just another thing to clean in my honest opinion. I’m more of a set it and forget it. Kinda guy :). Lots of things one can do in this hobby to experiment. Sounds like I see a few more liters in your near future. Good luck sir!!!
Good chanel buddy! So if i have a 24/3000 multiplus inverter and a 320ah powerbank a 150a bms will be enough?
Good work mate, simple to the point and you seem like a wholesome dude, thank you for your time
Thanks for watching. All the best
Wow, just wait until you do the two step with the carboy and it slips out of your hands and takes a dip 😀 Great video. I have used an aquarium pump and aquarium stone to get oxygen in my carboy's after a disaster in my kitchen from doing the shake method.
How long do you let it ferment?
That whole 720 line has major gps problems. When they fly great there great but most of the time they dont so i fly mine manually. Just land it at th 1st low battery indicator
Hello, Great video and especially from someone "local" !! I am in north bay and have a north stills 10 gallon reflux type setup. Started doing grain mashes redently. I use soda crystals to eliminate the off-taste from the sugar wash. It works well.... Looking forward to your next videos Richard
Hi, I built a really nice thumper. It's a 5 gallon reservoir and well built! Let me know if you have any interest in this!! Thank you Richard
Nice job and instructions ty
Thanks
Okay so I have 180g pack of turbo yeast classic 8 do I use 17.8lbs of sugar with 5 gals of eater and 1 full pack of yeast?
I’ll get a link for the instructions on the back of the pack.
It’s 17.6 lbs / 5.5gal of water and the whole pack of yeast and nutrients.
www.stillspirits.com/products/classic-8-yeast?_pos=1&_sid=b1e2f2ca9&_ss=r
Any way to check what wires from the motor are drive and cap. Without pulling apart the motor ? I have 1 white, 1 blue, 2 black all the same ga.
I've been using the same barrel for the last 10 years and I've only ever washed it with my hand and water and I've never had my yeast die and I still get great of alcohol
I think the idea behind using something like Starsan to clean your equipment and vessel is to be confident you don’t introduce any bacteria into your wash which during fermentation would be a perfect time for it to grow into mold and cause off flavors in your distillate. Happy to hear you’ve never had issues. 🍻.
I've also left fermented wash for a couple of months before putting it in the still😆
Hey, what do i do with it when im done? I've never dermented alcogol or turboyeast so i dont know what to do. Im just worried about it continuing to ferment after it is done
Not sure I understand your question. But you want to distil the alcohol from this wash recipe. then you can discard it or some people pour it in their garden to add the nutrients. After you’ve removed the alcohol from it with a pot still or column still you’ll keep the neutral distillate and make some delicious alcoholic beverages . 🍻 happy distilling.
This is one of the most stressful things I've watched in a long time.
Pro tip from an amateur, invert your sugar, citric acid say 1 table spoon per 5 gallons of wash. Bring to a boil pitch sugar and acid reduce heat to simmer for minimum 20 minutes maximum 30 minutes. it will get rid of the table sugar taste by converting the sugar to simple sugars. But otherwise loved the common sense you the video!
5:12 It said to cut the hole 3/16ths bigger, but you added it on both sides. Looking to see how this comes out.
I found the pipe passing thru the wall was still nicely snug and the outside and inside trims are more than big enough to cover. I was happy with my installation hole size choice. Gl with your install.
Hey mate that was a really helpful video been looking around and very informative and clear cheers mate 👍
🍻 thanks for Watch glad you liked it
Got a new cap because motor was humming. The new cap did not help. Still motor hums. The motor will run when I quickly move propeller with a screw driver but not on start. Maybe motor a little too tight??? Please advise. Thanks
This could be a few things. The motor will drive a pump for the oil. So you’ll have to do some investigating. Check the oil level, cleanness and thickness. Try the motor disconnected from the pump if you can easily get it apart. See if the motor runs with no load or if the pump turns without too much force. This might steer you towards if the problem is mechanical or electrical.
Does it matter if the wires to cap is reversed.
Lag bolts, nails or screws to built tower?
Lag bolts is what I used to attach the legs to the platform. The platform itself was assembled with nails as well as the cross bracing. I did use some screws to help quickly hold things together but all were replaced and had nails added at their locations. Screws are great in a pinch but if you bend a nail in half it’ll fold and back and forth a few times before it will snap. Most screws will snap off during the first bend. Not recommended to use screws for anything other then hanging a picture. :). In time a structure under load will eventually snap screws off as the building stresses under changing loads. Hope this helps. And thanks for checking out the channel.
You did a great job capturing the falls, I hope you make more videos like this one.👍👍
Thanks!!
Any updates?
I’ve been back to work for a couple months. Thanks for asking. I’ll be getting back into the cabin stuff now that the snow is gone. I felt a lack of confidence going to the cabin alone with my leg not 100% during the winter. Please excuse the long delay. See you guys soon.
Are yo from the East Coast? Newfie myself living in NW BC
No sir. I lived in bc for a stint tho. Lol I’m from Ontario.
@@IndependentOffGridRetreat kinda explains the east coast accent. You're from the middle east. I'm from the far east lol
Do you end up with clear a wash after fermentation?
No it’s pretty cloudy. Even after you clear the wash with the still spirits solution. It’s still opaque. But after you still it. It’s clear as crystal.
I just stumbled on this video, and want to thank you for it. We currently live full time in a trailer (5th wheel toy hauler), moving from one location to another, anything from overnight to a few months. At some point though, we want to settle down again, and something off-grid would be great. I love the idea of a raised tote to act like a water tower. Maybe we'll end up doing roof cachement for our main supply, with lower and larger totes for storage, I don't know. But whatever we do, I appreciate the good explanation of your system. The way you use a battery-powered pump to catch up the supply is ingenious. I assume you then slow-charge that battery so it's ready for next time. So much of independent living is "making do", and the more people sharing their creativity on that, the better.
100%. I appreciate you kind words and logic. Make do with what you go that’s what I say too
Good information! If you zoom the camera in a little more often, it will be easier for us viewers to see what you're doing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks. This is great feedback. I appreciate that. I’m a one man show. So I’ll have to keep this in mind. 🍻
Hey! Hello Ontario neighbor. Thx for the info.
🍻
Nice setup. Would it be less work for the pump it you were to add a diversion valve at the tank so that you could fill the tank from the top instead of the pump having to work against the back pressure as the tank fills?
Wow!
Thanks. This helped me with my install.
Glad it helped
You don't want those. The smoke can kill you. Get an electric heater or real house unit.
I appreciate you taking the time to think of my well being. I’ve used wood stoves my whole life.
haha. Did you see the name of his channel?
Which brand skillet
I use a lodge brand cast iron set. It’s not the best brand but once it’s broken in it has a nice surface and is easy to season.
Excellent system and beautiful video. Good job!
Ty for your kind words sir
Nice
To boring to watch hope it turned out ok ! I’m glad I have a good electrician this guy idk
Pourquoi les câbles bleus et noirs négatifs sont petit ? 6AWG pour 150A ???
I unfortunately do not speak French. But I hope you can read English cause I think I understand. You are correct. This inverter requires a much larger size of cable for use which I show in another video. This was a test and I did not have the large cable yet. So I used smaller cables and made sure to calculate the load and keep it below the cable I used rating. When I did the final installation see n in another video I used much larger cable
Don't rush back to work, take time to recover to full health. We will be here when your ready !! Take care and God bless 🙏 💚👍🇬🇧.....Simon
Thanks 50. That weekend at camp killed me. Definitely overdone it
Take your time recovering mate !
Truth!!
Lol I uploaded the same scene twice. Oops.
Hey bro, quick question. Do you wait until the bubbles completely stop or is there a little bit of activity left when you rack. I have maybe 12 small bubble sites, very little airlock activity. I took a reading and it is 1.000 or past that now. But still a little bit of activity
The reading is what’s important. When the SG stays the same for 2 days it’s ready to run.
@@IndependentOffGridRetreat ok perfect, thank you. I'm going to rack into a clean carboy before I add the turbo clear
thanks for posting! Very helpful as I'll be doing similar install out the wall on my 40x8x8 shipping container. Looks like i need to build framing / walls out with 2x6 to support thimble and chimney since metal shipping container side is skinny.
Yes. In this 2x4 wall with drywall inside (which I installed after) and 11/16 siding board outside it just fit. Then instructions should have the min wall thickness dimension.
Thank you. Glad you shot this in real time. ( Without music) Your pace and the way you puzzled everything out is usually the way I approach jobs I have never done before. Looks like a solid job. Good luck with everything.
Ty sir. Appreciate the positive feed back. Have a great day.
Good day, my wash is foaming up. I only left about 5 inches of head on top of the carboy. Will that slow or foam over?
Mine foams over. You can add a table spoon of olive oil. May help. What I do is use a hose instead of a air lock on my stopper. I wrap electrical tape around the end of a hose and make a knob. Then push the hose thru the little hole in the stopper and pull that knob into the stopper to form a seal. Then the other end of the hose I submerge in water in a Tupperware container. That way anything that foams over will just be cought in the Tupperware. And not run out of airlock all over the place.
@@IndependentOffGridRetreat perfect thank you. I gave it a slight shake to reduce the foam and it went down but if it continues I will replace the airlock with a hose. As far as the olive oil I'm not brave enough to try that. I see the logic in it but this is my first run so.. Is it ok to aggetate it a little once in a while or best left alone.
I’ve read some guys go so far as to even stir their wash. I have stirred shook added olive oil and left completely alone not noticed any negative effects. My kitchen where I ferment is on the second floor and when walking the water in the bottle moves a little with the steps. I don’t believe any issues arise until after the wash ferments. Once your yeast dies and you clear the wash (if you do). You want all the dead yeast to settle and not make it into you still. This will add off flavours. During the fermentation there is so much agitation even from the escaping co2 I wouldn’t worry
@@IndependentOffGridRetreat good stuff, my little aggetation stopped it from foaming so far. It's holding steady at 26 celcius. Shouldn't take long
Hello. Is your water from your tap filtered or straight city water? I'm debating to use Sudbury water or not. I have Culligan also
When I ferment I use unfiltered tap water. When I reduce the moonshine to 40% I use filtered water. Don’t forget after reducing its recommended to run your reduced abv distillate thru a filter. I use a Brita. So tap water would work if yours doesn’t taste that bad or is not hard. 5.8 to 6 ph is what’s recommended. But I never test my ph. Just giver go. :). 🍻
@@IndependentOffGridRetreat thanks. I just did my first wash ever with the same yeast
I tried inverting the sugar first by boiling and adding cream of tartar
What temp do you add the yeast at?
My carboy is at 38 Celsius
🤔 how did you get that IBC tank on top of your tower, you got yourself a forklift in the middle of nowhere?
No sir. While empty I tied a rope to the back of the bottom of the tank and leaned 16’ 2x4’s up against the top of the tower. I wrapped the rope around over the back of the top and back thru the front to me thru the middle. I pushed the tote while I pulled the rope continuously untill it was on the top then pulled the 2x4 out
Go with a diesel water pump especially if you pump water from a bore. A diesel pump will fill your tank in just a few minutes.
Well done.
Good video!!
You sure made the most of the space. Hopefully you win the lotto I'd love to see the expansion project for sure.
I’m right there with you sir :). As soon as it’s something in the future I’ll be announcing it. Now is not the right time to start such a huge investment for me. Maybe 2024….. fingers crossed
Nice !!.... (chipmunk)lol
Shit I thought autocorrect fixed that. 🤷♂️. Lol
Hello. Thanks for video. Can you tell me where the BMS blow out the air? At the fan or on the BMS side is the air output?
Good morning and welcome. The fan is in a plastic housing that encapsulates the whole face of the bms. There is an air channel underneath the housing across the front of the bms to the end where the battery voltage sense cable plugs in where there is vents. When the internal temp of the bms raises above the MOS. Temp protect setting in the app the fan turns on and sucks air into the front and blows it out the end of the bms where the sense cable is. Hope this helps. 🍻
@@IndependentOffGridRetreat thank you very much for your perfect answer.
