Born and raised there, Southside and then Kirkwood. Went into the US Army as a 2Lt in 1969 and made a career there. I’ve made visits when I could for holidays and family events. I’ve watched the downtown go down hill and after burying my dad, I’ve never been back. Thanks for the time lapse look at Binghamton.
Look how many stores in the town of Binghamton. Wow times were booming then. Unlike we now. Were strained in sin and probably will always be from now on. Sad times now. Wish for the best cuz it might be over this coming November. Dream a little dream
A great look back, however the song choice could have been better.
😮😮wow... cobblestone & trollies!!
1864 New State Hospital ... the huge building on top of the hill as shown in the drawing in the beginning of the video😊
I miss the old Sun Theater on Glenwood in Binghamton. They charged ten cents each for a small cup of cola and a small bag of popcorn. And the Admittance was only two bits ( that's a quarter for you younger people out there).
What a beautiful nostalgic video! 😊 Thank you! 😊 (subscribed)
Binghamton less than 10 years after the Civil War. A depressed economy with cold winter months and lots of snow.
I love Bing
Who oversaw the destruction of our city with their “urban renewal”? Or shall I ask which political party and their “progress”?
This is the same day and year i was born
I was 9 years old and lived on Moeller St towards the Court St end. I have so many fond memories. My maiden name was Ditta. Thankyou!
In the 70s, my parents bought an old victorian house on the westside. The sellers left a lot of old stuff that we as kids loved playing with including antique clothes and hats and toys. No doubt our stuff came from some of the stores in your video. This video makes my heart smile. Thank you!
Its easy to look back on images like this nostalgically and say "thats when times were good"...but its also easy to forget how fleeting these moments are....in many places the late 40s and 50s were great...but that was maybe 12 to 14 years before a small recession hit in the late 50s...and the early 60s innocence gave way to the late 60s turbulent Civil unrest and Vietnam. Into the 70 stagflation and OPEC crises....late 70s recession and the 80s rise again.....the reality is that no one really lived "the good life" for their entire life. Most had to navigate ups and downs in the economy and job changes which moved families apart.... love to look at these old photos. (And I'm from this area)..... but also like looking forward....great compilation 👍
👍
the peanut shop is still there !
You forgot about the selling of refreshments to gawkers, who paid to walk on the scaffold to gaze upon the starving soldiers. That's worse than Andersonvile.
Thank you for the great pics! My uncle was a bartender at Swats...brings back good memories!
As Marty McFly said when he went back to 1955, “Wow, they really cleaned this place up.”
That was great. Therue was included a couple of theaters I forgot about. One theater I didn't see was the Riviera. I just might have missed it though
The Stone Opera House became the Riviera.
Yes brings sadness to my eyes. To what this area has become. U can plainly see so much stores family oriented stores. That now are gone. In just 40 years this area has turned basically into a junkyard of which no jobs can be found that are worthy. That's why people are leaving here going south. If u look closely at these pictures u can see it was far more fluent on keep a business than starting a war. This us sad that it didn't stay like this only to grow 4 better times. Very sad. Makes me want to move away.
Binghamton at least has a significant amount of beautiful historic architecture and a true downtown core. Niagara Falls completely destroyed its downtown core with careless urban renewal based on unrealistic pie in the sky dreams and plans. Today downtown Niagara Falls no longer exists and there are only a few historic remnants left.
super catchy fr.❤💯
wow this is beyond stellar.... born n raised in Bing... the depth and history you caprure is remarkable ❤💯🔥
Loved this! Thank you.
Nice photos but the presence of telephone and/or electrical wires strongly suggests that some were taken well after the late 1870s.
Should have never got rid of the trains, nice video
We should have never allowed blockbusting which chased more prosperous folks to the suburbs.
Binghamton died when Guiliani drove out the criminals in nyc they dispersed upstate.
That was the final nails in the coffin for Niagara Falls as well.
Don't go blaming Rudy Guiliani. Don't forget the politicians who welcomed and encouraged the influx of d-bags from NYC. Don't forget all the industry that disappeared when companies either failed to adapt to changing times or sold their employees down the river in favor of overseas endeavors.
A lot of nice buildings back then. The Susquehanna , Chenango , river. The lock systems for going all around . My great Grandfather was a fire man around 1900 . Loved his mustache he had .
I grew up In Binghamton on old state road
I had a couple of great uncles that lived in Binghamton during that time. They had barber shops on Water Street, I think.
The only place I remember and went to was the Home Dairy....Fowler's Dept Store.....wish it showed Philadelphia Sates on Clinton St. Or the numerous bars and bar and grills.
Nice photos, but the audio sounds like the theme music from a horror movie.
This is how I remember Binghamton, omg, what memories....
Hi Ed, looking for info on the McHenry Shirt Company located on 71 Court Street circa 1900- 1904 or so.
Clinton F Mchenry started making shirts in Binghamton in 1879 in the Bennett Hotel, 188 Washington st. He incorporated the the McHenry Shirt Co in 1904. in 1909 he moved to 2 & 4 Court St. He died 1943. Never located 71 Court as far as I know. If you have something please share it with me
Nice video montage. Crappy choice of music, though.
Nothing wrong with the music.
Thanks to NYC sending homeless people up here and ruining the city!
One of the years I saw was 1616. I think they meant for it to be 1916.
M&D nuts still the oldest business in Bingo and still smells amazing
Oldest business in binghamton is Ellis Brothers Furniture
SWEET !!!!!! Thanks.
Lived by Ross Park from 1964 to 1975. Been on that carousel thousands of times !!!!!!!!
Lived next to ALJO's till third grade then moved by Ross Park. Ran sandwiches from the Queen Elizabeth on Henry St. Wilson's store on the corner across from ALJO's. Spent MANY hours on the southside at "Hershey's" and Devine's on park ave. Feel sad, like watching a departed friend when they were young. SIGH.
Regus Theatre was in the empty lot next to my store.
I think I recall seeing these pics at the Binghamton library?!

Edward Brewer I was only three years old at the time. We just moved a few months before to our new house on Glenmary Drive in Owego.
Great slide show!
