Backstory to the bear boss He was visited by a bear who gifted him gold and riches (his introduction to gold and greed) Later in his life and in the story of journey to the west. Tripitaka (journey to the west MC) brings over a golden kasaya (fancy blanket) which the bear monk is infatuated and his plan, made by 2 of his disciples, was to burn the temple so it would kill Tripitaka, so the blanket would be in his possession. Wukong catches wind of this plan and brings over an item to protect Tripitaka from the flames. Tripitaka lives, but all the other monks in the temple dies and the bear monk out of shame, kills himself. (I am horribly paraphrasing but the overall original parts are there.)
