August is the bleakest time in the Drakensberg, with tinder dry grass and great swathes of burnt veld. We hiked up to the cave from Bushman's Nek in a near gale-force headwind, and only just managed to find one small pool of muddy water. A single afternoon in Chet's hide, adjacent to the Krung Ching section of Khao Luang National Park in the south of Thailand revealed an asonishing diversity of birds. The following morning allowed us a unique opportunity to film a pair of beautiful Malayan Banded Pittas and the stunning Chestnut-naped Forktail. The Drakensberg has some of the darkest skies anywhere. On just one night in the Wonder Valley, we enjoyed a spectacle of stars and Milky Way at New Moon. Next morning, the imposing Cathkin Peak, Monk's Cowl and Sterkhorn are lit up by the changing light of dawn. @johncarlyon
