    I love your shirt! 😊 I think you did so good with this experiment! I have to say though, you should have a schedule that works for you, and task switching like that between teaching and research is not good for anyone. I’m assuming you have already, but if not I would urge you to talk to whoever decides and make sure you have time allotted throughout the week for your research, like two full am sessions a week or something. You should not have to get up at five in order to do your regular day job. The employer has some responsibility for your wellbeing, no? I would go on strike as well! 😊 Loved the video, and Emma is adorable, I would be stuck in that chair too.

      @ellenmadebookclub Thank you 😊 On my schedule, I do indeed have two full mornings and 3 full afternoons that I could dedicate to my research, but in reality, things keep coming up that disturb my concentration. I could be better at making students wait for answers to emails. But, I do also think that my brain likes very early research mornings before the busyness of the day starts bringing on all the distractions 🤪

    • @ellenmadebookclub
      @ellenmadebookclub 4 часа назад

      @ Ok good! Well yes, I think your students, and everyone else, could wait a couple hours! I wouldn’t expect my teachers to respond immediately, I would assume they have other things to do. An email can wait at least a day. Some people even put in their sign off template “checks emails every morning” or something, so people know when to expect an answer. Might take some pressure off. I just want you to take care of yourself 😂

    Ooh, I want to-read The Minaturist, I had no idea there was a sequel too. What a gorgeous cover. I have a game Marrying Mr Darcy (exactly what it sounds like), with a zombie expansion inspired by that book😄 Count of Monte Cristo is soooooo good! It looks long but you'll be swept up in it, and if you aren't that's probably a sign to dnf 😄

    You’re going to have a great year of reading 😊 I also bought a lot second hand and some of the choices were perhaps questionable, but each time I read a premise again or think Why did I buy that? I can still see the reason, even if it’s not my top priority to read. I think that’s natural and nothing wrong with it 😊 I just wanted some more options on my shelves, and some might look less appealing now, but that’s only because I found more books throughout the year that Im even more excited about! So all good 😊 I think you’ll enjoy Beartown, and I don’t think it will be as difficult for you as Ove, the other ones I haven’t read 😅

I hope I can read The Secret History this year too, it’s on my physical TBR as well! Same with Monte Cristo as you know haha. I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts on The Atlas Six, I wanted to love it but couldn’t really get into it 😬 Would love to read Brothers Karamazov as well. The Miniaturist was my 2nd book of last year, still havn't gotten to the sequel either. I haven't read "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" but I have read "Sense and Sensibility and sea monsters" and I really enjoyed it! I lo♡e The Faithful and the Fallen! I've read all of Gwynne's books! Technically Priory of the Orange Tree is a standalone. A Day of Fallen Night is a prequel but they are technically standalones. And I absolutely LO♡E them! I like to say Samantha Shannon is the closest thing I have to a god lol. North and South is great! I have read all 3 of my Skaði books! "Njord and Skaði" by Sheena McGrath was a good nonfiction that I learned from! "Skaði's Saga" by Phil Tucker was a good norse inspired fantasy. "Skaði Goddess of Winter's Hunt" by Skye Hellviolet was the worst thing I've read in over a year, It was so poorly made I suspect it may have been written by AI. I decided to get Artemis first but I decided to get statues of Artemis and Skaði to put on top of my feminist bookcase.

    Wives and Daughters was in my Top 10 too, it's a real shame there was no ending as North and South has one of the best endings ever. Piranesi blew my mind too, I need to read Jonathan Strange this year. Middlemarch and Jane Eyre were on my top 10 the previous year, although I prefer Middlemarch and watching bits of the miniseries this year reminded me how much I love the characters. My best books of December were. -The Wedding People by Alison Espach -North is the Night by Emily Rath (based on Finnish mythology) I'm the only one that doesn't like the Andy Sirkis audiobooks, I own and listened to The Hobbit and wasn't a fan unfortunatly. (Love the book other times I read it). The newest Sigurðardóttir book in English is "Can't Run, Can't Hide", but it's still very expencive. It's $39.74 which is 5,861.65 Króna I'm currently reading a nonfiction called "Njord and Skaði: a myth explored" by Sheena McGrath and it mentioned Tolkien, here's most of page 127. 『It seems appropriate that the modern variant on the Njord - Skadi story comes from Tolkien. The story goes that two races, the Black Númenóreans and the Gondorians, were at war. The Gondorians and Arnorians were breakaway Numenoreans who considered the others to be renegades.[178] It is not known why the Gondorian king Falastur married Berúthiel of the Númenóreans, presumably as a political accommodation. She went to live in Pelargir, Falastur's home, which was by the sea. She hated the smell of the sea and fish, and the noise of gulls. She wore dark clothing and loathed all ornament. Her name means something like "Angry Queen".[179] She became proverbial, to the point where more than 2,000 years later Aragorn mentions her and her cats in an off-hand remark.[180] Unlike Skadi, she was exiled by the Gondorians and returned home. Tolkien himself commented that Berúthiel was like Skadi, since both disliked their maritial homes.』

And the top two romances I want to get to are Cleat Cute by Meryl Smithetsman and Set the Record Straigjt by Hannah Bonam-Young. It's not a real tbr, but that's kind of a tbr(ish) thing!

    It makes me so happy to see everyone being kind to themselves in the new year! 😊 I think you’ve got a great setup for you tbr/pop there. Ideally you would feel like you did for Moonstone for every book! But then some are good surprises too, so it’s good to be open to trying other ones as well. I will hold you to the dnf and unhaul though! 😂 I had plans, and then I have more leftovers from December than I wanted and also lots of books coming from the library, so I’m lost under a pile of books! It’s fine though, no pressure! 😊

      @ellenmadebookclub It seems to be a trend to be kind and gentle with the goals this year. Almost everyone is talking about that. I do hope that the books I'm less excited about will surprise me 😊

    I’m turning 50 in November - how did that happen! Scary and makes me rethink a lot of things. Need to be ruthless and go though my unread books and keep what I want and get rid of anything I’m not ‘feeling’ here’s to a wonderful year xx

    I loved hearing about the icelandic christmas traditions! Those Jule lads seem like a fun bunch 😂 I once tried fermented skate and saying it was an experience is probably the best description, I could literally taste that all the way to the back of my head 😆 I reallhy enjoyed your answers to this tag, allthough I think if someone listens to LOTR as their first audiobook, the bar is gonna be set pretty high 😅

Sorry to hear your chronic pain has kept going, maybe the new year will bring new ideas to help that lessen. Happy belated Christmas! I'm a bit behind on my watch later list on booktube, but this was very cosy nonetheless! I've read Letters from Father Christmas by Tolkien over the christmas days and it was just such a precious book, I loved it! By the way, I had a little double take with the christmas tree lighting clip, there was some people counting down in dutch next to you

    I am all about slow living and slow reading. I have made a bunch of reading plans for 2025 that I am pretty sure are not very realistic and are not achievable at all. So will slowly end up changing my mind about all of them. Oh well. I hope you have a happy new year! 🎉

    These sound like great intentions to me! I’m feeling a similar ways, I like to plan and I like plans, and I tend to go all in, but for 2025 I want to enjoy myself and have zero pressure. No musts or shoulds, just wants and doing whatever feels good and gives me happiness and relaxation and fun. Easy peasy peace and fun.
