CLINGMANS DOME, GREAT SMOKY NATIONAL PARK
We visited CLINGMANS DOME in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the beauty up in the summit offers spectacular 360 degree views of the Smokies and beyond. At 6,643 feet , it is the highest point in the Great Smokies and the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi. Although the half-mile walk to the tower at the top is steep and not for the faint of heart, it is so worth it. Watching the sunset in the summit was one of the most amazing moment in our lives and spending it with the family is priceless.

    I've been there about three times. The hike up gets harder every time I visit. The Appalachian Trail runs right under the dome. I've seen bears on the trail before but just the cubs. Mom was probably nearby but we didn't wait for her to show up. Gatlinburg is nearby but is quite the tourist trap. There are some good breakfast places there though. Gatlinburg Seems to be popular with newlyweds. Or used to be. Have fun!

    Not sure how I missed it the first time watching but THANK YOU for posting the CAT scale weights as well! I was wondering how close to my 5500 lb capacity I would be pushing it with this 1172 when I get it :) How much gear did you have loaded up at the time of the weighing?

    • @lancininthestreet6155
      @lancininthestreet6155 Год назад

      At the time of weighing the Ram 3500 diesel dually curb weight was 9100 lbs. The load included a driver & 1 passenger , full tank of gas 50 gallons , 5 gallons DEF , tools , couple packs bottle water and personal belongings. Payload rating of our truck is 5300 lbs. I would say with the Lance 1172 on board with options , 2 30lbs propane , with dry weight meaning there is no fresh water , black & grey tanks are empty. We are pretty much closed to the limit GVWR 14000 lbs. All I can say is be mindful and cautious of your payload to avoid over loading. Hope this gives you some idea. Thanks for watching our channel.

I actually came to this video searching for what type of tiedowns to use on my Lance 1172 with a ram 3500 DRW and long bed and your video was the first that I could clearly see the tiedown points to make sure this would clear the rear feders. Thank you so much for posting your experience. Makes me nervous because I'm driving my new-to-me 2017 Ram 3500 with 92k miles on it 1300 miles from Houston to Pennsylvania just to buy the lance lol

      I know it was a nerve racking experience. Amazingly we kept our cool. Anyway , Happijac is the brand and model of the Tie- downs and turnbuckles system that we used. Its the same tie down system we used with the 2003 Ram 3500 dually and Lance 1162 for almost 20 years before we traded in. Enjoy and safe travel to Pennsylvania. I'm sure you.re eager to buy the Lance. Thanks for watching our channel.

    Would you happn to have the model and part number for the exact camper tie-downs that you have? I'm in a pinch to make a quick order for a long trip and have no idea which ones to buy to get the right length the first time ordering so that I can drive 1300 miles to pick the trailer up on the RAM 3500 DRW. Same setup. Great video!

      Glad to help. Comes in 2 sets one is the tie downs and another one is the turnbuckles. The model of the tie downs is the Happijac Camper Tie Downs- Custom Bed and Bumper Mount -Front and Rear. Part # LC236326-205221. The model of the turnbuckle is Happjac Quick- Load Turnbuckles. Part # LC182895. This tie down system is available to buy online at etrailer .com and will give you all description and specs. Just input your truck and camper info to double check the parts number. In my opinion the Ram 3500 8 ft bed diesel dually is capable of handling the payload weight of the 1172 truck camper. The past year we travel around the country including the mountain ranges of Colorado and Utah. Ride was smooth and comfortable , have more than enough power and acceleration. I think the factory air bags suspension is a plus. The only thing is we travel with empty fresh water , black and grey tank so as to keep the weight down and avoid maxing the weight limit of the pickup truck. But overall we are very happy and satisfied road tripping with our rig.

    That is the EXACT same setup of truck/truck camper we are currently saving our pennies to purchase (Lance 1172 & Ram 3500 duelie). I wish we were sitting around a campfire together sipping on a cold one, I’d have soooooo many questions to ask. From what it sounds, your truck is handling the heavy payload without any major problems (one of our biggest concerns) and has plenty of power to do the job. What type of mileage do you get, on the average, when hauling your “house” around? Are there any recommendations you would give to improve the trucks ability to handle the almost 5,000 lbs sitting in the bed? Thank you guys very much for any advice you could provide and for putting together these videos in the first place. My wife and I are currently “semi-retired” and are planning to put together our rig within the next couple of years. P.S. You have REALLY got me thinking about that silver color for the truck. We were leaning towards a white truck but man that setup you have sure looks SWEET……

    • @lancininthestreet6155
      @lancininthestreet6155 Год назад

      Glad you like and are interested on owning the Ram truck and Lance camper setup. In our opinion it is one of the best truck camper especially when it comes to quality and workmanship. Lance also has a higher resale value. Our previous Lance 1162 that we owned for 20 yrs will serve as evidence. On our recent road trip NY to Utah and back via Arizona and Texas we drove approximate 5000 + miles , the average MPG was 14-16 depending on the terrain which is not bad considering the payload. The Ram 3500 dually handled the payload well and safely without any problems. The ride was smooth and comfortable. The dually and factory air bags is highly recommended. Another suggestion is distribute the weight load between the front and rear axle. To avoid overweighting overloading the truck , we try not to travel with full fresh water tank , full black and grey tank. We drain and dump fluids prior to driving out. On our trip we noticed that fresh water is readily available for fill up at gas stations, truck stops , camp sites , state parks and even rest areas. So I did not see a reason for hauling a full tank of fresh water. Probably save an extra 400 - 500 lbs additional weight. Just bring a long hose for access. In terms of power , pickup and acceleration in my opinion the 6.7 L turbo diesel was more than sufficient but you have the option to upgrade to the HIGH output diesel engine if you want. The Ram 3500 6.7L diesel dually with max camper payload that we drove was tested and passed the grueling and demanding driving on the Colorado and Utah mountain ranges up and down which peak to 5000 - 12000 ft above sea level. There was no shortage of power whatsoever. And the Ram Cummins diesel comes equip with the turbo exhaust engine brake which is superb and fantastic. Very highly recommended. We choose silver color for the pickup truck because it matches the grey mountain graphic design on the camper and the black out windows and accessories. Good luck on planning to set up your rig. Hope we were able to provide some advise answers that will help in your planning. Sorry for the late response. Thank you for watching our channel.

    Glad you’re enjoying your new 1172. Finally picked up our 2022 Lance 1172 a couple of weeks ago. Took one week short of a year after ordering it last year. Too late to go travelling now with winter around the corner where we live. Love the new camper though. A few subtle changes from yours. Our awning is black and they’ve taken the latches off the rear window to easily open it. Probably for some kind of liability issue. Soon as spring comes we will be taking some short trips around our province and try out the new rig.

      Congratulation on your new Lance 1172 ! The camper is rated 4 seasons if you ever decide to take it out in the winter. Just make sure propane tanks are full for the heating furnace. Your truck camper really took longer to built . I'm sure production line was so busy with many pre orders. Did you choose the lithium battery ? Our standard AGM battery was not holding the charge too well and power rans out fast. Time flies and passes quickly ! Soon you will be taking trips in your new rig. Happy for you guys. Congrats again ! Thank you for supporting and watching our channel.

    WHY ? Base MSRP around $70K........and a diesel dually for around $100K. Imagine the motorhome (and nice 4X4 dingy) you could buy -- NEW -- for that price. WHY ? If you are farmer or other commercial guy that already has a writeoff for the truck....imagine the super luxury trailer you could get for $70K. Again........WHY ? Being an old RV'er since the '60s, this seems obscene........unless, of course, you are a Powerball Winner with more money than brains.

      We had previously owned a 2003 Lance 1161 and a Ram 3500 Hemi dually that we travelled with for almost 20 yrs. We were so satisfied with the quality , workmanship , durability and versatility of the rig , hence we traded to another Lance 1172 and opted same Ram 3500 truck. Good looking rig! We also had an 1172 though it was a 2002 with a 2002 Duramax. Great package deal from original owners. I miss my Lance. We sort of outgrew the doorway :) Still have the Duramax but with a Jayco 5th wheel.

      Thanks! We and the kids outgrew our old Lance 1161. Had it for 20 + yrs. Decided to trade to 1172 with 2 slide outs. More roomy! Enjoy your Jayco 5th wheel. Happy camping. Safe travel. Thank you for watching our channel.

    Thanks for video and nice set up! What hitch did you install in rear of truck?

    • @lancininthestreet6155
      @lancininthestreet6155 2 года назад

      Thanks! The hitch was a Ram factory installed equipment. Its a class 5 hitch with 2.5 inch opening. In combination with the hitch I used a Reese Titan 48 inches box extension that runs under the camper rear overhang. Thank you for watching our channel.

      @@lancininthestreet6155 Thanks. Thought that was the 48 inch reese Titan. What have you towed with that hitch?

      I have towed a utility trailer loaded with a Polaris Sportsman 500 ATV and alternate with a Harley Sportster 1200 motorcycle

    Enjoyed your video. I also use my Lance in the LI area. If you are a fisherman... You can get a permit that allows you to stay at field #6 overnight. Maybe we will see you out there one day.. Good luck with the new rig.

      Thanks. Staying at field 6 overnight sounds good. We used to do 4wheeling at Democrat point in Robert Moses and fish for blues many years ago. It was fun! Btw we plan to tail gate with the Lance at the upcoming Santana concert at Jones Beach theater. Maybe we'll ran to each other around the area. Thank you for watching our channel.

      We are so delighted with the 1172. We are loving it ! Really minor problem. I'm pretty sure your full of eagerness waiting for the arrival of the 1172. Pretty sure your going to love it. What kind of pickup will you use? By the way, we bought an extended warranty. You know, for peace of mind. Think about it. Appreciate your support . Thank you for watching our channel.

      Thanks for your comments. I currently have a 2008 GMC 3500 dually diesel low mileage. We bought it with our current Lance camper 2 years ago a 2008 Lance 992. I will certainly look into the extended warranty. Our dealer is about a 3 hr drive from our house. Happy camping. 👍🇨🇦
