Amazing new perk discovery for me after one week in the surf... The foil drive gives you so many opportunities to catch waves during a session that the learning curve is incredibly fast. Seriously seriously fast. ;) No need to wait for the ideal day based on your ability and no need to wait for the ideal sets. Just ride anything anytime. #lakechamplainkitenwing #wingfoil #wingfoiling #foildrive...

Great vid. Can you provide any lessons learned or insight, eg foot placement, balance tricks/tips?
Thanks! Thoroughly enjoying this little device! For starters, it’s much better to use a board designed for this use instead of one like in this video. 2nd, train your trigger finger to work independently of the rest of your body. 3rd, place your fingers as close to your knees as you can when going to stand up. 4th, really overemphasize the amount of weight you put towards the front of the board. 5th, use the minimal amount of power (just what you need, no more). 6th, try it under ideal conditions (those suited to your ability level). 7th, watch all of the gen2 videos. Extremely educational and helpful. Have fun!!!
@@lakechamplainkitenwing excellent advice! thank you
I'm to young of a winger to fully appreciate this but I'm looking forward to big swell. :)
Yes, newbies don't suffer from this. Unfortunately (or fortunately.... depends on how you look at it), me thinks you'll encounter your first case of EWD next season. :)
thanks for the inspiration!! got everything needed, just need to get beyond the dreams~
Why you use a leash? Is it not to heavy pulling if you fall down?
Don’t need it for flat water, but easier to leave it on than tackling the knot to get it off. Used to it so don’t really mind it much.
Great! will buy a FD to use with my F-One Jam 1600 and 13L Ensis pumpfoil board. Do you dockstart and pump Axis 1300? I learned dockstart and pump with PNG1150
I've never tried dock starting. Maybe next year. :)
Cool! which board?
🙏🙏AppleTree Skipper 43L
That Skipper must be a new board? Great size!
Yup. Picked it up last month. Love it! Haven't tried it with the wing yet.
To bad the perfect wave happened at the rocks or I might have been in this video :)
I was on a roll. Let's do another one this Tuesday or Wednesday
I watch all kinds of videos on foiling, and here you are, someone upstate New York on the shore of Lake Champlain. My home stomping ground,. Good for you. I'm down in Ocean City, New Jersey, foiling on my Jen 2 now for about. 12 sessions and worth every penny. I'll be up North this coming July. Maybe I'll see you out there on the lake, it's a big lake, I'll be closer to Plattsburgh. In cliffhaven. Just south of the air force base back the days. I'm looking forward to bombing around on the lake. Hopefully, they will be some good wind. I know they get waves as well. Maybe we can do a down winder . Michael .
I live just a few miles from Cliffhaven. IM me and we'll definitely hook up!
Wow, this is going to be lengthy, but since a few people have asked... I think that if you can handle the waves in any of the Great Lakes then you can handle the waves anywhere. I correctly assumed that getting in and out of the water is where things can be radically different, especially with foil gear. So, here's how I prepared, and here's the plan I put in place that proved to be quite sound... Watch as many videos of people getting in and out of the surf as you can, and watch this... ruclips.net/video/mmsgBi8OL44/видео.htmlsi=TI6x0Jon8KJ1UEC_ When you do make it to the ocean, stand in the surf for 10 minutes with your gear just shy of the breakers to get a feel for the strength of the current and the power of the breakers (you might be surprised... I certainly was) and to learn to time the breaks when it would be safest to exit. You do not get that strength and power in a lake, so you'll need to readjust the way you enter and exit. Being patient and watching for breaks paid off big time!!! Although most of the surfers were in shorts only, I went out in a full suit, impact vest, and helmet. :) Practice duck diving! Once out there, stay deep and once you start riding the waves, exit before they break until you learn to read them. Don't try to hang in there... bail before you you get tossed! You don't want to get caught in the rinse cycle attached to your board and foil! Scary as hell!!! Finally, come up with a way to detach yourself from the board quickly in an emergency. I chose to enter and exit the surf without attaching my board leash. I attached it once I got deeper. My personal preference (not everyone's) is that it's better to sacrifice my gear than my body. I did release the board a few times during my first few attempts. It washed up to shore with no damage whatsoever. And, I was glad to have separated myself from the board. Some foil surfers have created their own leashes with quick releases, and I plan on researching that some more. These were my preparations and thoughts as a COMPLETE FOIL SURF BEGINNER. Now, after many sessions, I'm still glad I approached it the way I did, and feel comfortable sharing this. What I didn't do until several sessions in and would have benefited from doing sooner... Talk to the local foil surfers, ask them for any tips/advice, listen, watch, and learn, and bring the beer. ;) Another thing I didn't do, but consider to be sound advice, would be to venture out for the first couple of times under ideal conditions (no wind, no current, tiny shore break, etc.), and work your way up to the "bigger" days. I head back to the ocean in January and can't wait!!! ENJOY!!!
Great start on your first FD 🌊 surf session. You looked fairly comfortable out there. What were you doing practice wise before hitting the ocean. I find some sessions on Lake Ontario quite challenging, particularly in the fall/winter where the waves & swell significant.🏄♂️👍🏻
Love this. I'm working on these exact skills right now. I'm a... step or two behind you. Thanks for the inspiration.
🙏Enjoy! So much fun!!!
Sweet float and yank!
🙏 was hoping for more of a float, but the 7 wasn’t enough.
Very slick transition!
Def a fun one!
Man, you nailed this tip on how to take off and approaching your hands to your knees. I took me a while to get it by myself. It’s key for guys like me 60yo w/o surfing background and not loads of flexibility. Prone surfing became a reality for an old man with a dream that w/o FD would be impossible to accomplish. Expensive?! How to price a dream come true at your 70’s?
69 yo actually
Glad the tip helped. Couldn't agree with you more on your last comment! I've gotten a lot of use out of it. "You don't stop playing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop playing."
Show Off !!! Ha ! I can just barely Heineken Jibe. I am NOT jealous !! NOT Jealous at all..Never. !!!... (...maybe a little bit jealous ? 😂..)😅
Ha! The Heineken is awesome!!! Have you checked out all the variations to it?
LOL, good music too. Are you using your Naish 2140 HA jet for this wake thieving?
Depends on the boat wake. Since this was more of a roller and slower speed, I used my HA1440.
Thanks. I will buy a gen2 next year. Own Naish and Axis mast, want to wake thieve boats going by that kids are surfing behind the boat. It’s a great wave. What front foil would be best in your opinion?
@@johnschukei1708 If it's a good wave, I'd go with the HA1050. It's an amazing foil!!!

Hi what length, thickness of leash do you use?
@@markgransbury8377 in heavy surf, 6’x8mm, attached to my ankle. All other times (dw, wake, pump and glide) 6’x5.5mm. For dw and png, I have started attaching it to my waist to keep it from slapping the board all the time. Makes for a much quieter ride.
Sick! Which campsite?
Frisco Woods, Hatteras, NC
100% & too bad the session at loggerhead didnt work out, there were some nuggets that day (good not great). (and dont forget about Pocahontas State Park, fun trails and really nice campground
Yeah was totally bummed about missing out on that session with you guys for being such a dumb ass.
Excellent FD explanation demo, am getting onboard for supsurf as well. What’s the dimensions of your board? I think you mentioned 60L? Doesn’t look like you can stand and paddle?
Yup 60L. Definitely can't stand and paddle. Amazingly fun gadget!!!

Crazy bro, love it.

Do you do private lessons? I live in Maine but grew up in Mad River Valley. My mom lives in Waitsfield. I want to learn wingfoiling. I bought a wing, just researching and asking people questions before buying the board and foil. I have background in many mountain and water sports. This would be a combination of them all. I live on an island so I’m in the perfect spot.
Sorry, I don't. North Shore Kite Sail n Surf in St. Albans would be a great starting point. Watch the learning videos on youtube. You'll pick up a lot of info. Also, if you don't own one, find a friend with a jet ski or boat. Great way to learn about the foil. Wear a helmet and full wetsuit. Sounds like this sport is 100% up your alley!!! Your first board doesn't need to look pretty. As long as it floats and doesn't retain water, you're good to go. A floaty board will allow you to learn and have success in "less than ideal" conditions. Not so much with higher tec gear. But, you will out grow it. :)
@@lakechamplainkitenwing thanks for the info. I just ordered a nice big 140 liter wide board. Got a big foil set. Like you said. I can always downsize as I eventually progress.
@@adamosgood perfect! Good call! You’re going to love it. Make sure you bring your gear when you. Is it your mom. Lake Champlain is fantastic for winging.
This seems like a great set up for Maine in the summer when we have light breezes often. I’m 190 pounds. Looking at getting 110-130 liter board to learn on. Also a large foil 1800-2000. Does that sound beginner friendly? I have been skiing, snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding, sailing and flying most my life. Like you said, I’m also willing to spend the money on the carbon boards. I assume a very light board would give a beginner that much more advantage.
This is a great sport that just keeps evolving. I'd talk to shops and get their opinion on what gear to purchase. Chances are pretty good that you'll quickly outgrow your first board. Getting too small of a board will end in a very frustrating learning curve. DW boards are a great option, but you run a strong risk of damaging them, and quickly. Beginner boards are beefier. If you have never been on a foil (kiting, wake foiling, foil surfing, efoil), be ready to spend many many hours before even getting up on foil. These hours will be a lot more fun with some flotation and a big wing, since you need a lot of wind in your wing and a steady board when learning. Many shops sell used equipment. Go big, go used, have fun beating the crap out of yourself and your gear, and then sit down and reconsider your next purchases. By then you'll have met and talked to other wingers, you'll have a much better understanding of your foiling needs, and you'll know a lot more about the wind, water, and weather conditions in your area. Then, the board can be handed down to your kids, wife, girlfriend, friend. Real, Mackite, and Duotone have great videos on youtube. Also check out Damine Leroy's youtube channel. He has some great insight. For "wing candy" there's always JD'FollowCam' And there are many more. I'm on instagram if you want to IM me and talk some more one on one.
KISS Keep it simple stupid!
Would you describe the gears you are using here too?? ❤
Naish ADX 4m wing, 72L board, 85cm mast, 1040HA foil, Insta360 camera. 😁
@@lakechamplainkitenwing how much do you weigh !?

I was just wondering about this sort of rig today, great to see that it works! Seems like it could be a good way to learn to pump foil where I live & also add a safety factor for return vs swimming…
You bet!
It’s an awesome little contraption.
Yeah!
I'm getting one.
You have good content but I think if you had a thumbnail hinting at the video’s content rather than just your logo, you might get more views. Anyway, when it gets choppy, it helps if I hold the wing way out in front of me when I pop up on my knees after doing the stinkbug.
Thank you Sansei Mike.
@@aminefadous5875 😂🤣😂
Is that side shore wind? Looks super easy to control the flagged wing there, vs. normal onshore backwinding problems.
Nope. Those are wind generated bumps, so the wind is traveling in the same direction. :)
@@lakechamplainkitenwing What was the wing blowing?
@@slappysurf I'm using a 2.5m wing so 30+.
@@lakechamplainkitenwing Ah, no wonder it looks so easy to handle!
Im 60 and wing foil but would love a way to go out on no wind days or help to learn to prone foil in the waves here during the summer in florida. Great tips thanks larry
This toy is made for you!! I'm 61. I use it all the time, either for downwinders on lake rollers, flat water pumping, or wake thieving. This guy today let me ride his wake for 1 hour. Used 10% battery life only. In a couple of weeks I hit the ocean. Can't wait to try it in the surf.
I saw the specs. for your setup at the end of the video. What is your body weight? In those conditions were you able to get up easily and were you using max power? Aloha, Don
I’m 147lbs. No problems at all getting up. I only need 60 to 65% power. I never max it out.
Cheers will try the two hand grab, for some stupid reason my wi g always ends upside down with Heineken
You need to point the nose of the wing more up wind and hold it there a little longer before you spin it.
where are you? Doesn't look like Lake Champlain!
Ha! Footage from La Ventana this past spring. Just getting around to it.
During our summer wind drought, I've been going to a lake with a lot of wake boats. It's fun pirating wakes and riding leftovers after the boat stops. I never realized how long the wakes keep going. Waiting on good boats can suck, but no worse than waiting on good wind. 😂
Did some of that on Saturday. Not much boat action during the week around here. Hoping for another DW on Friday. :)
Yo Mike, our side of the lake has big boats pushing up and down the lake so we get pretty solid wakes hitting our beach. Better than the bay side ;)
My 28L felt like riding a tablesaw. Missed my front foot placement and my leg swept under the board, just missing the prop. Just making sure you know the dealio :) Exploring Champlain this week if you want to sesh.
Sir, I didn't think anyone was crazy enough to try this. Up to this point in time, I've only wondered if it was possible. I have the same board and a gen 2 foil drive. Looks like you've given me a whole new area of foiling to explore. Thank you!
Been using it quite a bit and getting up has gotten a lot easier.
Thanks for the inspiration. I love the Heineken Jibe(s). And, thx for recognizing its inventor! Too many videos don’t mention his name when describing the move…pathetic.
🙏🙏🙏
Inspiring! As you were talking about a 30l Board. Today I tried my old Kite Foil Board(Duotone Pace), 29.9l, 18.5", 4'10" with Foildrive. Frontwing Duotone Whizz 1000cm. 82kg weight. It almost starts better than my 45l Prone/Wing Board 4'6". The big difference is the rocker. I guess it's true what the guys from Foildrive say: length beats volume. Let's add, less rocker beats volume and maybe some inches length 😅. The nose of the Board is a bit wider, which makes it easier not to sink the nose while accelerating. It's amazing finding old boards that work well with Foildrive. Even Kitefoil Boards🎉. Enjoy your Lake withFoildrive. I do the same at Lake Garda👋.
Agreed. Unfortunately, I go from a 60L down to a 12L. Definitely need to get something in between.
smooth as always
🙏🙏🙏
