Dr. Joel Weintraub (an emeritus Professor of Zoology at Calif State Univ Fullerton) mostly has RUclips videos on genealogy (U.S. & NY censuses, Ellis Island, naturalization & immigration) and natural history (birding, bird migration, field optics) topics. He started in genealogy over 20 years ago and volunteered for 9 years at the National Archives in southern Calif. Joel, Steve, and their volunteers produced locational tools for the federal and the NYC censuses for the Morse "One-Step" website (stevemorse.org). Joel has published on the U.S. census and the 72 year rule, the Ellis Island name change belief, finding difficult passenger records, searching records (and understanding the geography) of NYC, and a revision of the life of the field biologist AL Heermann. He is the winner of the 'Award For Excellence in Science Education' (1995) from the Orange County Science Education Association and co-winner of the 2022 Shirley M. Barnes Records Access Award.

The 1921 Immigration Quota Act. Part 2. Chaos At The Individual Level
Просмотров 283 месяца назад
This video is a continuation of the impact that the 1921 and some subsequent Quota laws had on U.S. immigration mostly from Southern & Eastern Europe. Part 1 covered changes in shipping and pressures on U.S. consulates and immigration stations during the early quota years. Here in Part 2 I concentrate on the law’s impact on individuals seeking to come to the United States. Most successfully nav...
The 1921 Immigration Quota Act Part 1: Chaos At Incoming Ports

This video relying heavily on newspaper articles and case studies covers the Emergency Quota Act of 1921; its history, how it changed immigration numbers and proportions especially from southern and eastern Europe, how it was carried out with some discussions of its features, problems caused by a lack of strong oversight over shipping companies and U.S. consuls, and problems with continuous ove...
Charles & Rose Ponzi, Official Records: CP's statements vs the facts
Просмотров 366 месяцев назад
There is a wealth of published information about Charles Ponzi and his wife Rose. CP even wrote his own (partial) biography. But as a family historian, I bring to the table the need to find OFFICIAL documents that defined his life. Once we find these, we can evaluate statements made from him, and about him. Such as where he was born (Lugo, Italy) and how much money he actually said he came to t...

Doheny State Beach is located in Dana Point, south Orange County, California. During the winter of 1995-1996 it provided a number of spectacular bird species (Lesser Black-backed Gull, Ivory Gull) including our subject, a White Wagtail that drew over an estimated 500 birders from throughout the United States and some foreign countries. This ‘throwback’ video hopes to capture the excitement of t...

Nice video, but I think sharper delineation between porro and roof prism binoculars might have been useful. Porro prism binoculars are in general DIY repairable, roof prisms are only for pros. I tried and successfully repaired a number of porro binoculars, but managed to destroy my cheap roof prism binocular in repair attempt. So old broken porro binoculars are good DIY repair candidates, while older roof prism binoculars should be avoided when look to be broken in any way
Hi, does it still work nov2024 on ios18?
Thank you for this. Disappointing to not yet (it's now 2024) have any access to overseas military census records. My family were in England with my dad serving in the USAF, and my husband was born on a base in Japan in 1949. I was really hoping to have those records, but they still haven't turned up.
@26:30 that the binoculars cannot see brighter than the eye. If you take a 80mm aperture bino and effectively compress. The photons into a smaller area which enters a human pupil then surely that is brighter than same uncompressed photons ( less photons per area) entering the naked eye ? Brightness is photons per unit area ?
No. Have you searched the literature? Start with: www.cloudynights.com/topic/163371-brightest-images/
Nice video.
Thanks
I’m not really a birder, but enjoy watching them and yesterday we were at Dana Part & saw quite a few snowy egret and the double crested cormorant. I was able to identify them because of your video, so thanks.
Our pleasure!
thanks for a great presentation
You are welcome!
This is another phenomenal vidro! In my youth, I was a naturalist/teacher at the Pool Wildlife Sanctuary in Emmaus, PA. That was 35 years ago! Your videos are a great tool for anyone who really wants to learn the ins and outs of binoculars in detail! Thank you! I learned a few things while watching! Fabulous! Now that I'm retired in FL, I get the birds to come to me! LoL!
Thanks for sharing!
This was an excellent video! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for your real world experience!
My pleasure!
amazing❤
Thanks....
Thank you for this. I'm struggling to find my common-named g,g,grandparents in Philadelphia in the 1870 and 1880 censuses although their children were baptized there in two churches in the East Kensington / Kensington area (St. Anne's and St. Michael's). They had in infant child die in 1872 and the death notice indicates the funeral would leave from his parents' home (the infant's parents) at the intersection of Emerald and Ann Streets (these streets no longer intersect). So that's all I have to go on along with the baptisms. I appreciate the other strategies in your video and, of course, the tools you've built along with your colleagues. A tremendous asset not only to the genealogy realm, but the world!
Thanks, I just found your comment. Philadelphia street changes are a real challenge aren't they!
Cool tips. Some links to purchase would also be helpful.
as a rule, with small binoculars, the image shakes, the eyes get tired. What is the stability of the stillness of view with the Nikon 6x15 and Nikon 8x20hg, with the Zeiss 8x20, Trinovid 8x20, the image shakes, shakes! Are the Japanese ones better?
Images don't shake, hands shake. The small binoculars have small pupil sizes, and thus make it difficult to align the user's pupil to the binoculars pupil. 6X15 (15/6) and 8X20 (20/8) have the same pupil size. Other variables including center of gravity, ergonomic design, eye relief, weight of binocular, and muscle memory all play a role in binocular use. If those binoculars were put on a tripod, the image wouldn't shake.
Joel, We got it close to the island right by the Sheriff's substation this morning around 10:30 to 10;45. Cute little bird. Lifer for me. Thanks for posting the videos.
Very useful, thak you sir
... if what you say about putting a hole in the objective lens cap is true, then a toilet roll support has no field of view. Rather the question becomes ‘how does a toilet roll limit FOV?’.
You can test the statement that it isn't the size of the objective lens that determines the field of view of a binocular but rather the optics. You can have two 7X35 binoculars with different field of view although the objective lens is the same size. Toilet rolls aren't optical devices, last I looked.
A toilet roll could be the barrel of a binocular. The problem is, holding wider toilet rolls up to your eyes does increase your field of view.
reread my response. there are NO lenses on your toilet roll ends, or middle.@@francisfrancis4219
...I have to give you credit as only after seeing your explanation how reducing the objective aperture does not affect FOV, did I finally start to click how binoculars FOV works... The person who asked after the FOV of a toilet roll may have been asking a question about camera lenses, but not one about binoculars. If the Q was in reference to binoculars, it was either a trick Q, or the person might have still been confused themselves.
Joel, I was out there yesterday and today (early afternoon), and missed the AMOY both times. I did get the BLOY this afternoon in the same area where you had both the AMOY and the BLOY this morning, but he was by himself. I will be back tomorrow morning and hope to get the AMOY. Thanks for your video.
For everyone's info, Peter did find the AMOY today, the 19th.
Very helpful information thanks sir
Thanks for the comment.
Nice photos and videos! Are you using that Nikon through a spotting scope? I remember you being excited about using a point and shoot camera and aiming through your scope when I took Ornithology with you in about 1997? Now we have phones and all kinds of gadgets to make it even easier!
Thanks Tim. The Nikon is like a spotting scope and gives me 60X optical looks. Of course I cropped some of the video sequences for the video. Glad you liked it. Thanks for the memories. Joel
Thanks for your information very helpful
I have a pair of trybe optics 10x42 ed HD the right eye will not focus ..$320.00 Its a manufacturer defect however I didn't use them for the first year that I owned them and warranty expired.. So I have a $300.00 paper weight
Perhaps this will help? ruclips.net/video/PGqfsPxAVp8/видео.html
Awesome video I just purchased Nikon p1000 I also own a Dobson 12-in telescope It has a two inch eyepiece. I want to get a adapter and mount this camera to it. Do you have any suggestions what I need? Thanks!
If the eyepiece/telescope has threads, there should be a way with tubes and rings to mate the two, but the weight of the P1000 will be a problem. I'm not sure why you would do this.... you can get higher magnification with different telescope lenses, and if you want to use it for picture taking, aren't there now electronic lenses which will generate computer images?
amazing
35:00 A person in a birder group who has to back up while trying to view a bird with binoculars is an embarrassment. Don't be that guy. Choose the right type of binoculars to view bird close up or else the birding group complainers might see to it that you are not invited to go with the group to look at birds any more.
I don't think that is the way to handle that situation. The group leader or fellow birder should inquire what the problem is.... the birder's equipment or perhaps some eye problem. One shouldn't jump to conclusions just from the situation posed.
@@JDWTalks Bird watcher backer-uppers are not as bad as a ringing cell phone birder.
I should've have watched it before starting colimating 20x80 binos 😅
Dr Weintraub! Great to hear your voice again. You may not emember me but this is Tim Revell. I was Bayard Brattstroms grad student in 1994-1998. I took ornithology with you and Dr Thomas in 1997. So great to hear your voice and find these videos!!
Hi Tim, Nice to hear from a former student, and a Professor at that. I'm doing well..... hope 2023 is productive and healthy for you.

The Ra power ap is no longer in the Apple Store what software do you use?
Hi...there are two variables here. What I have is the NewQ FileHub which should be the same as the Rav device. I have from the apple store the app "NewHub" that works the device. But when apple updated iphones to 16.... the NewHub app stopped working a number of weeks ago. I still have an older ios, and reluctant to change it to preserve my control of the NewQ. However, I see that apparently NewHub app has been updated last month to correct the 16 ios upgrade bug .... but I don't see any reviews that it now can control the device. I also see today an app "NewQ Drive" that I downloaded but having played with it. the NewQ also on my old ios iphone can be controlled from a browser by entering address: 10.10.10.254 but don't know if it will work with ios 16...
Not supported with latest IOS … so device is obsolete
thanks, I won't update to 16 until the app is revised. But what about the browser address utility for the filehub?
Adding this on Feb 2023. Updated my iPhone to 16 and haven't lost ability to control the NewQ NewHub app. So all is well.

Wow
I have to give a presentation about Ellis island for school and this helped so much. Thank you.
Great.... knowing your information well should guarantee a successful speaking engagement. I always like to use props when I talk on the subject.
I have address, ED tract, streets that bound the address, the name and last name but have not been able to find my grandfather in NYC. Any tips? I am sure he lived at this address and I found him on 1940 census and all those before since he was in US. Thanks
Louise, your comment is on my 1960 RUclips video. The 1960 census won't be available publicly until 2032. Did you mean 1950? I can't help for 1950 if I don't have the name(s) of the people living in your target residence and the specific address. I have the resources to provide a new set of eyes on your project. And I'm also a New Yorker to boot!! Send it to me privately if need be. census1950@cox.net
Hi I put some prix binoculars back together, they only focus on short distance. The longer horizon focus is not achievable. Am I missing something?
Will the ocular mount come out of the binoculars when you reach the end of the focus turns? Perhaps and I don’t know much about your model the screw that holds the ocular shaft within the central cylinder has unscrewed and the synchronization is now off
@@JDWTalks I will take another look at at that. Thanks D

This was excellent and quite in-depth! I will be re-watching this. Thank you, Joel Weintraub!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you, Joel! I sure hope you continue making videos, you are an excellent teacher. Looks like the 1960 census is going to be problematic to say the least!! I love that you dropped the mic! Thank you for all the work you've done!
I have census kits for 1980, 1990, and 2000. Put the 1970 kit online as a RUclips video. But the other kits are just barren bureaucratic sheets of instructions. Nothing of real human interest to this human. But we will see.
Thanks Joel for sharing your talk from ECSU.
I had it as unlisted for a while, but decided to make it public as part of my body of work!!
As someone who is getting into vintage binocular collecting, this video series has been invaluable when trying to parse the terms used on cloudyskies and birdforum. As with any new hobby, parsing the vernacular from old hands is 70% of the battle! Thank you!
Thanks for the remark!!
@@JDWTalks If you have the time, can you do a deep dive into rebuilding diopter lens housings? I'm a visual learner and am having trouble rebuilding a set of older Sears 600* series. Thanks for you time 🙂
Great video! You put a lot of work into that! I share your enthusiasm for birds!
Thanks.... I've found by talking to many genealogy groups that there are high numbers of birders among their audience. Perhaps "life birds" and "there's another ancestor on my list" satisfy the same basic human desire. Joel
This is so captivating, about to watch part 4 after the first three. Thanks for doing this.
