when will the low iqs and other downshifters dunderstand that not all 9 to 5 are the same? foolish false dichotomy. many types of 9 to 5 - office, manufacturing plant, remote, and so on. I for example work 9 to 5 remotely, and it's pretty fine actually. while I felt bad at office 9 to 5 zoomers these days

I’m an entrepreneur for 10+ years and only worked for others for 2-3 years after graduate. Honestly being an entrepreneur is not easy and it’s not for everyone. My cofounder gave up in the middle a few years ago and went back to work for others. Fortunately I’m still doing good during this tough economy. But all in all, I have to say running your own business is not for everyone. As an employee, you got a stable pay check every month. As a business owner, we take financial risks.

Maybe I'm just old (I'm 45) but it's bizarre to read comments from people who haven't even worked a full calendar year and are so very fed up with office life. You could be out on a scorching hot roof doing construction work - or unemployed and unemployable all together. If you're not going to do a job, exactly what are you qualified to do?? Few people have a burning desire to be a lawyer or enter a profession, most people are earning a (good) living by pursuing a law degree. Who will pay you anything for...being yourself? If you're going to start a business, most successful entrepreneurs work for someone else for years or decades to identify the market and their product and to build out their network. I don't think someone "leaving the 9-5" at age 21 to start a business will be able to build a successful business

This is why if it's an option, you should live with your parents as long as possible and invest as much as you can. Not just in the stock market but willing to take more risk. Asymmetric investments are going to be your friend, the stock market is good but its slow so don't be scared to go beyond that. This way you can be financially independent pretty soon and still have the rest of your life ahead of you.

I'm thinking about starting a wood chopping business. I already have a wood splitter from my dad (RIP Dad) and I have a trailer from my dad (RIP Dad). People pay a lot of money for wood too and I already have tons of logs in my yard so I even have all the resources.

Not ever one can escape the cycle of working. What your co worker said was so true he didn't even realize it. He himself admited to the exploitative nature of capitalism. We all live to support those who do no work of their own. This is a contiuation of a cycle of history that has repeated itself in every society since the agricutlural revolition. The ones who work live to support the lives of those who do not work or work very little. It's a shame that the working class is completely defeated. In the early 1900s we actually had hope for the future.

I feel the same way. I've been a teacher for 8 years and I just quit. I'm learning how to copy edit and I am going to work freelance and be my own boss. It was either that or take myself out.

I honestly think the problem is that you are looking at a computer screen all day....that would kill me, your generation has been enclosed in a box...forget corporations - go to agricultural school, work on a farm, do something that works your mind and your body. Sitting in an office is a death knoll. Good luck! Your future is in your hands, really it is.

Having your own company is just slightly better than working for someones else's company - though there's a broad spectrum of how much profit and benefit you will get in your life. There's a lot more work involved obviously, running your own company, but the more lucrative it is, the more you get to be the one with the stick. The issue still is though, that you're getting bent over by the, what I call, the 'legal mafia' - it's extortion, only they have a whole system built up around it, to F you up, if you don't pay up - and their system is so all encompassing within the society, that all the other slaves are like defender bots, programmed to explode if you even simply point this sh!zz out to them. And to add to your point, where you are remunerated for your time, just a bit more than your buddy in a different job role - these autobots in society will see themselves as successful to be earning a higher wage than others, without actually working out the fact that they're taxed more, and it doesn't work out as beneficial as it appears. It's like when people gamble - they put a bet on for 50 bux and double their money, and come away with 100 bux. They tell everyone they won 100 bux (with a smile, but squinty eyes) They only won 50 bux though. They only have 50 bux extra. HE DID'T GET OUT OF THE CAKADOODY CARRR!

I am 48 and I have 4 weeks of vacation now (after many years in which I had 2 and then 3), and I agree with you. It’s freaking ridiculous even 20 days. Do a calculation. Don’t consider Saturday and Sundays and holidays but all other days in which you can work in a year. Then calculate the percentage of vacation days compared to the days you work in a year. Vacation days are…6% or so. So we give 94% the workable days to a company and they give us only 6% of vacation time. And we are forced to accept this contract because it’s the same all over.

I agree with you, but i still choose to work 9-5 because i don't have any backup financially at the moment. I hope soon in a few years i have found my way. I actually don't have any problem with 9-5 job (as long as it is in line with my interest) The thing that bothers me is they locked us. They are consciously preventing us from developing as free individuals. It's like once we worked in certain field, we have to do that until the time we die. There will be unnecessary questions, "why?". I wish i can say "why bother?" "why i need to tell you why?" to them. It's my right to change path in life, build my own life, my dreams, experimenting, become creative, and FREE.

that's easy to say honestly and in some regard I can agree with him but there are many more factors that involve a 9 - 5 job one of the biggest ones is responsibilities it's easy to say these thing if you don't have to pay rent for living and buying food to eat. but majority of people do and it multiplies when you have kids and a wife, everyone thinks creating a company its easy which in contrary it's one of the hardest things in life making a company succeed you will realize that its gonna be instead of 35h a week you will work more like 60 - 80h. I can speak out of experience I have a Bachelor in Computer Science with 5 years in the field moved to Canada to study and try to build a life this year and guess what I am struggling to find a job even outside of IT. Not everything is black & white. God be with us.
