    I've been thinking this was a mate in 49, now I'm seeing mate in 48 with both knights sacrificed and the promoted queen mates. I play through to make sure black always blocks the b pawn as it's marching. Anytime the black king doesn't block the b pawn, the win is a move sooner, white doesn't have to tempo the rook between d1 and e1. Every b block and wading move maximizes black's fight and I can see what is the soonest move to mate is. I thought it was 49, it might be 48.

    I've studied the hell out of this position. Stockfish doesn't see an immediate win becsue of the horizon effect. It eventually sees a mate in the 51st, then gets smarter it's on the 50th, finally this is a mate in 49. I personally like to start with Rg2 for the possibility of a capture and a sooner win, I then play 2. Rhg1, I do have to play Kd1 to defend the rook before Re2. I like when the 2 rooks are defending each other. The black king does shuffle. When it gets to that point you almost didn't point out, the king should not be on a5 or c5 because b4+ would force the king to move, the a pawn can't promote, and the rook would capture the a pawn. Stockfish likes to shuffle the king all the way to the king side of the board but there's a reason the king should be back to b5 in time. On the analysis, I force the black king to put up the fight. I play 17. b4 a1=Q 18. Rb2, if black wants to put up the best fight, it should play Kb5. That blocks the pawn from moving. I wade the rook back and forth. I play 19. Rd1, put black in zugzwang and the king either goes to c6 or a6, then I can advance the pawn another square, black blocks again and I move Re1. That idea is repeated until the last Re1, Ke8, then black is faced with zugzwang to capture the rook with 25... Qxb2. I play 26. Kxb2. Black doesn't have to immediately have to capture the rook on b. There is another maneuver with the remaining rook. White plays 27. Rc1, 28. Rc2, 29. Kc1 and then the rook becomes a threat on b so the pawn captures it. After 30. Kxc2, 31. d4, the pawn does get captured but the pawn move freed up the knights and now one knight can break into the fortress and black would resign. Right now Stockfish is seeing mate on the 50th but it will get smarter and see it is mate on the 49th. I got after 32. Kd1, mate in 18, but I know if I let Stockfish evaluate for a long time, it smartens to mate on the 49th.

    This set up is impossible to obtain. The only way for black to get into this position is if the black king was at a7. But that means black's rook had white's king in check. The white king could not occupy row 8. In white's present position, there is a triple check on square c8. There is no way that black's king could have occupied that space before because there would have been at least a double check on that space.

    Btw the black pawn that reaches g3 could only be the g7 or the e7 pawn at the start. That's because there's not enough pieces to capture if that was c7 pawn: only the rook on a1 and the bishop on c1 could be captured. There's also pawns that can lead the black pawn to g3, but the two d2 and f2 pawns are on their home squares, so there's no way for c7 pawn to reach g3 square

  • @kirpayti
    @kirpayti 12 дней назад

    Actually I think it should be said that it's blacks turn in this position, because otherwise the sentace "Can black castle?" can be treated as "Do black have the right to castle still?" an the answer will be yes. If it's white turn then the following sequence is legal: 1. Nc8 (from b6) - b6 (pawn was on b7), 2. a3 - Bc8

    I am so bad in chess and yet I figured that one out. I thought you never said who plays next so everyone is just going to assume it's white cause they have more pieces. Sounds more like a trick than an actual puzzle though.

    Although this could be construed as a bit of chicanery, I see the point, being, that no matter what black does, there is checkmate in one by White. In some sense it is like calling out checkmate in 6 no matter what black does.

    As much as I want to love this puzzle, I think being intentionally misleading and getting berated for it shouldn’t be surprise. You can’t pie someone in the face and then when they get mad you explain the joke and give them compensation and expect them to not hold it against you. You were obviously fishing for people to get confused, so don’t be surprised when they don’t like the result. Most people go into chess logic puzzles assuming it’s more basic and a simple test of their knowledge, misleading people like this brings them out of their comfort zone so they obviously won’t always like it.
