Always Summer Rochambeau
Добавлен 24 апр 2018
We're a Dutch and American married couple sailing with our dog on our Lagoon 400 full-time while we work reboatly. We used to own a monohull and converted to a catamaran in 2016 and can't imagine any other lifestyle. To date (Dec 2022) we’ve sailed over 15,000 nautical miles in California/US, Mexico, Columbia and Panama. When we aren’t on the boat, we’re skiing and snowboarding at Mammoth Lakes, CA.
Throwback to Living at Catalina Island - Ep. 44
This is a good compilation showing what it’s like to live in Catalina Island. (Sorry, about 1 minute got duplicated by accident.) It was the good life and when things were much easier, but the water was a lot colder. I still miss living out at Catalina and we still pay to be on a waiting list for a mooring ball in Cherry Cove. You never know what lies ahead once we’re done full time cruising outside the US. Who knows, maybe we’ll go back and retire there…

This was my fourth time sailing the boat without Rolf. This time the ladies wanted to join and do a regatta against their men. We had all kinds of things go wrong such as the auto pilot didn’t work, the hammock line got wrapped in the furler, the helm station instruments didn’t display the wind angle or wind speed, the traveler line got stuck, and we had to anchor three times to get it right be...

Whales Slapping Their Tails! - Bonus Video
Просмотров 770Год назад
What a show!!! Did you know that whales slap their tails to communicate with each other, attract the opposite sex, ward off males, play, defend themselves and forage / shock other fish to eat? It’s called lobtailing and it’s really loud. This video compilation doesn’t do the sound justice. At about half way through this video the sound is so loud it’s like fireworks. #amazing #lobtailing #whales

This is a longer video than normal because it’s Bev‘s first time single handing the boat without Rolf. She did have her friend Richard Doherty (SV Arias’s Song) with her on the way to Catalina Island and Holly Rogers (Footloose) joined them on the way back. They also enjoyed the annual “Lagoon Escapade” hosted by Naos Yachts. Kavon Adli (Slip Away) and Charlie Devanneaux (SV Clapotis) make a...

Lagoon 400 Nacelle Repair - Ep. 35
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.2 года назад
Lagoon issued a repair notice for condensation that builds up in the nacelle under the water tanks. For some people / boats, they had bulkhead damage AND wood rot under the base of the mast. We got lucky and “just” had wood rot under the mast. It’s crazy that Lagoon was aware of it and didn’t offer warranty service for any Lagoon with the known issue. Even worse was the crap job they did to “su...

i am glad all is moving forward for you guys and i hope you get back in the water soon. take care and have a wonderful day
Thanks so much!
Wow great uogrades! What was your budget for all this? Did you reoplace the caulking because it was faulty? Did you install the seat over the davits too?
Budget?! What budget?! That got blown a long time ago. 🤑 We put in about $100K this year, which is very anomalous. But it was either that or spend even more buying a newer and bigger boat. So either way we win. The caulking started to look dirty and one window had a very small amount of play. So we just decided to be proactive and rebed the windows. Yes! We had a custom stainless steel and teak bench made to fit between the davits. Added the custom cushion and tada! A whole new seating area since we spend most of our time entertaining off the back cockpit.
Rolf and Bev are now certified hardcore cruisers.... great content. Thanks for sharing!!
We are going camping at Two Harbors. How do I get to the Blue Cavern?
It’s just east of the Two Harbors entrance.
Love the video! Great stuff.
Really nice job. I like the way you built it from aluminium profiles and with a simple tool set available onboard. I am looking at a similar approach for our Lagoon 39. Could you share the dimensions of the 2 pieces connecting to the compression tubes of the bimini roof?
Sorry for the very delayed reply! Ping us if you’re still looking for dimensions.
Colin from Sailing Parlay Revival sent me to your channel!
Nice! Colin’s awesome!
It would be so scary for sure, glad all is well.
Also, it’s also important to comment that the boats that approached us did Not announce themselves whatsoever, whether it was on the radio or through a bullhorn, for example.
Loved seeing you cats on Colin’s video!
First time I see this kind of "team-tail-slapping"! Found you via Parlay and nice to hear a " Dutch neighbor" is on your boat - greetz from Belgium - I am nr 280! Fair winds!
I love your RUclips Chanel! I just saw you in Parlay video!! You guys are my heroes
I hope you guys are ready. Your channel just got a plug on Sailing Parlay Revival. Your channel could grow exponentially.
That would be so cool!
Nice work!
So awesome!
Thank you for sharing.😊
How fun seeing the dolphins!
That is so cool, I had no idea that there were so many reasons for the tail slapping! Just saw you guys on Parlay Revival!
Parley sent us thank you for sharing
Where was this ??

awesome
What are the length and width of your solar panels, and do you think it would be ok if they were longer? I’m planning the solar arch for our 400 and trying to decide which panels to go with. Thank you.
Ours are 39” wide, and 65” long. Longer would have you end up in the commercial grade panels which are bigger and heavier.
NIce miss u guys
Ditto! Would love to meet back up one day out cruising!
Merci beaucoup pour le partage ⛵✌️✌️⛵
I bought my boat some from the police auction for $1 each

Curious if there is any limit on how much canvas you hoist. I notice that America's Cup and such boats, such as the exalted Volvo Ocean Racers, throw up so much canvas that they leave very little power in the wind wasted. It's always part of the fun to watch these sailing heavyweights hoist so many acres of canvas!
Thank you very much SV Rochambeau for your trust in us.
Thank you and your team for the very hard and quality work! I will fully recommend Rosas Boatyard!
Hello Thank you for this video it was great content! I'm booked to go in August, but may I ask how you two felt about the trip with Covid? I mostly ask because we have friends telling us costa rica is a "stay away" zone according to CDC, buuutttt we feel it may be safe enough to travel still. Also how long ago did you two go there? Thanks and keep up the great work!
Glad you liked the video. We felt totally safe. We were there for 7 days just 1 week ago. Enjoy!
@@alwayssummerrochambeau Thank you! great content!
Very good job !!! Merci pour cette vidéo
Very cool. I plan on doing the same radar with wifi. Glad to see it work. Why did you leave the radar dome at the level of the first spreader? Weight at the masttop should not be a problem with this lightweight dome. You could see further. Would masttop movement be a limiting factor? Is the radar affected by the jib in front (when its wet)?
Higher would be nicer, for sure. I still prefer the original location and not to drill new mounting holes in the mast and weaken its structure.
Not sure if I've seen these guys before. Nice video!
They’re all around Cherry Cove, Catalina, regardless of day or night. They mostly sleep or stay on the bottom during the day, but they swim close to the surface at night.
@@alwayssummerrochambeau - Just another amazing day in the life of a pirate. :)
Wow wow wow!! Going with you next time!!

Awesome!
Awesome footage! Love diving the kelp forests around CA.
Hey geys its LEEEEE amazing trip.. Charlie and i just got back from San miguel ruclips.net/video/Jrhyeym9UI0/видео.html made a little video check it out!
Just saw Charlie at Cherry Cove. Miss you!
Love watching these. Peaceful... and without the expense of owning my own boat!
Hi guys, sorry have been working. But this whole virus situation gives us some time to think about our boat and it’s awesome comfort and features whilst being in isolation in Mammoth. Our solar system has been working quite well. Certainly for 2 people more than sufficient. We never hit the 1000 Watts exact, but darn close. We did add a wind turbine to add power when sailing or relaxing in more cloudy or dark conditions. We will probably add some more solar to compensate for our additional freezer and fridge. Will probably make a video of that installation too. It will be 2x 150W flex panels on top of our helm station with another VictronConnect MPPT charge controller.
Dang. I think my hand reel must be broken - it doesn't seem to catch anything!
You probably forgot to toast Neptune with a shot of rum. That’s what worked for us. ;-)
Amazing
Wow -- running those hand-lines like a boss! This would be so much fun.
6 kt. of apparent wind?? white tops on the waves.. Dont think it was 6 kt. breeze. ;)
Emilengelbrecht Thank you for your observations and thank you for watching our video. True wind was approx 12 knots, hence the little white caps. Boat speed was 6 knots. Therefore apparent wind is 12-6= 6 knots.
Very nice video. Keep up the good work.
Sailing Nordic Sun, Thanks!
I am using the davit winch to keep the deck more organized. This way you don’t have to run the halyard to the helm which creates a trip hazard. No MOBs on my watch.
You use the davit winch for the port side gennakker sheet! That's a pretty interesting idea. Also, I was looking forward to seeing how to put it away single-handed.
Richard Doherty He didn’t put it away single-handed. That’s why I was there and a couple parts of the video are missing. 😉
Ah, now we know your secrets.
Great work. Can I ask why did you not wire the solar chargers to the far side of the shunt, so you get the power measurement from the shunt?
Richard Doherty What is the shunt? (Sorry, English is my husband’s 3rd language. He’s unsure of what you mean.)
I am sorry, I don’t understand your question or understand what the difference would be in performance or measurement. What would have been your interpretation of a better scenario? Please note that besides the shunt on the far end I also have a breaker installed primary to the solar charge controller.
If the solar attachment was on the other side of the shunt (not the battery side), then your general boat power monitor would include the input from the solar panels. Without using the shunt, the power meter includes the usage but ignores the input from the solar panels. I know you have a separate monitor for the solar panels, so you know what;s going on, but the general boat monitor would show a less useful number, I suspect. Just curious, this isn't any kind of design flaw, just a choice about what your power monitor reports.
Hi, sorry for misunderstanding your question initially. Your comment and therefore suggestion makes sense. I simply did not consider it as I was solely relying on the data obtained from the app provided with the solar chargers. The current power monitor on the boat is very limited in its capability to show the input of various charging resources. I am aware of reliable aftermarket systems that provide this flexibility. Consider it a Part 3 of the saga. I am sure improvements can be made and suggestions are always welcome.
Good job, How to perform panels until now?
Marco Nolis They perform wonderfully! We don’t need the generator anymore unless we want to make hot water.
Nice Video! Very good explanation of the technical side and the App!
This is the episode that starts the direction you need to go for the channel! Enjoyed this one!
Nice job. What are the solar panels that you have installed?
I installed 5x 200W Kyocera solar cSi wafer panels. I am planning to elaborate on the electrical bits and specs in the next video including the total cost of the system once finished.
