Converting 35 mm film console to 70 mm

For the 70 mm presentation of "The Hateful Eight" I had to convert twenty eight 35 mm consoles to accommodate the wider film format. This required moving the lamp and reflector assembly forward 1". Much easier said than done.
Sights & Sounds of Christmas in Columbus, GA.

This is 10 minutes of a Christmas program shot by Robert Starling in 1971 in Columbus, GA. I went along as grip. Robert included my name in the credits and the night of the program I went to see it at my friends house because they had a color TV. While working at WRBL, I found the film and added it to my collection. The original magnetic sound track is on the film but my telecine projector only...

1915 Columbus, GA Circus Train Wreck
Thanks for the memories. I was a senior at Pacelli HS. We went to the Columbus Square mall in Joe Abrain's '55 Chevy and sloshed around the parking lot. I then went to my girlfriend Barbara Hidle's house in Phenix City and we had a snowball fight in her back yard. I then went home through Fort Benning to Cusseta. Took me about 6 hours to make that normally 30 minute trip. The snow was awesome.
I ran these types of projectors in several theaters around the central coast in California, back in the mid/late 70's-early 80's. I worked for a nice family that owned several area theaters. I have experience in film build up and break down, a few different carbon arc systems, before automation and semi auto. Some of our projectors had the smaller reels, some much larger, and one of the theaters had large a platter reel, where the film/movie was built up to full length, and ran start to finish, no changeover. This projector also had xenon bulbs/lighting which was cutting edge for the times. Yeah I'd love to operate one of these oldies. My theater days in general were my best as a young adult. Great memories and great friends.
My father & Uncle too worked in an cinema hall, named "Minerva", with the same carbon arc projectors with polyester print films. Watching the film from projection room was preety exciting. 😂😂😂
I remember! I was in 10th grade we left school about noon and opted to walk home in snow! Great memories!!😊
❤❤❤loving these nostalgic videos
That was a while back.
Great video. Makes you wonder what kind of crazy steam engines we could build today with modern alloys, CAD, 3d printing etc... I bet 3d printing allows for some very interesting boiler designs.
When in 2003 did this air?
@@MrCaptainA It aired on a cable station in December of that year.
@@JohnMGilbert Thanks.
Why no light bulb for light??
Which 50s FOX movie was that? Klieg lights, btw, are based on the same technology.
I hope they give the golden spike to the company that engineered and built these two beautiful locomotives. They will display it in their boardroom.
I can see the future WHEN the oil runs out they will have to go back to coal and start building steam loco's all over again....Including the Big Boys as well.
Simplex E7 projectionist here 1969-73 Berkeley California, Kodaks DeVry and others
What movie was this?
nostalgic
These two amazing Locomotives warmed my heart.
Like so many others commenting here I also ran projectors like this in the early 70's. Only I was in Germany on an Army airfield running movies for the troops and their families. Loved that job.
Bought me a lot of pleasure man , great video and great presentation.
I'm glad you saved this footage. I remember going to the Springer in 1968 or 1969 for the first time and fell in love with the theatre. The box seats were still for sale then and I remember seeing patrons sitting there. By the time I started volunteering there in the 70s the box seats were closed and that area is used for backstage now. I remember the 3rd floor balcony with the benches and spotlights. Some of those areas were changed in later remodels and updates. Thanks for posting ❤
good to see you didnt waste it on nonsense.....oh, wait...
Both engine will last longer then the first ones because they were made from newer technology.!!!!!!!!!!!
I got a 16 mil projector I need to find the films
That was super COOL!!!!! I have two carbon arc cinema lights, but can not find anything about them! They are called Jewell with two ll's. Anyone have any information on this? Said they were made in Chicago. Also it says Supr arc on the back cover.
Glad you liked it.
Great job it was an amazing time It was a real arc projector machine of a single cinema screen .
To imagine that these two locomotives stood pilot to pilot at Promontory Summit 155 years ago is crazy. (Well, the originals at least)
Sad
😂yeah what losers.
Oh my word - such memories. Used projectors very similar to this whilst working at The Palace cinema in Alton, Hampshire in the UK. Always remember once mixing up the reels and showed 1, 3, 2, 4, 5 - there were some very confused punters that night! Also remember film get trapped and burning!!
I tip my hat to all involved for literally “scratch building” these two exquisite steam locomotives from virtually nothing…a truly magnificent engineering/design feat! Congratulations! 🚂 🇺🇸
To me those old projectors had better pictures and sound than today’s digital projectors by a long shot.
It's not always smooth. Sometimes problems. Burn! Audience yelling at ya. Booing. Your trying hard to splice. Sometimes things just don't go right.
I ran 35MM carbon arcs in college at a drive in. Much later ran 70MM Imax at a theme park with 12KW water cooled lamps on a 72'x96' screen. And separate 35mm synced six track sound film. That thing was a BEAST! But now I'm helping a local arts group restore a 1936 movie house in Newberry, SC called "The Ritz". We are hoping to find a 1936 era projector to display in the lobby if anyone has any leads on one? It could be a tax deductible donation.
That was the Rialto Theater marquis I believe. They were showing a lot of those kind of movies during that timeframe. The Rialto is no longer there and something else is in it's place but not sure exactly what replaced it. the Bradley Theater just next door is still there and seems to still be unoccupied. It would be great if an independent person would purchase it and reopen. It worked in Atlanta for the Plaza theater on Ponce de Leon. Oh well.
Nice
They got rid of the train????
I grew up right buy central Christian church on s Dixon dr.god I miss those days
Spactular, works of art, magnificent machines, built like some of the finest Guns! Except in a giant way!!!
John, do you happen to still have the original file for this video? I was a player that night. But I don’t remember the video being this grainy back then. I would love to have a clearer video of this
That footage is long gone.

I think I still have this vhs tape.
Thanks for this. Hadn’t seen anything like it since I was a kid hanging out in Drive ins while my grandmother worked them throughout the 70’s.
I really liked the guy at 13:15 painting on white lead with a cigarette dangling from his lip. I doubt either one would be allowed in the shop these days.
The crazy thing is the fact that this video was made at a time when film was still the primary way theaters showed film.
I used to see one of these locomotives and car at the old National Infantry Museum at Ft. Benning.
LOVED this and thanks for sharing, John! Not many drive-ins left in the USA now but I have VERY fond memories of all the ones I went to in the 60's and 70's in my hometown of San Jose, CA. 🤩🥰😎
I alwaysw wondered how this worked thank you for a great video.
Wonderful film! As a member of the engineering community I feel deep pride in the people who built the original locomotives 170 years ago and in those who built the replicas.
