Grasshopper Escapement Wall Sculpture
This wall sculpture demonstrates one of the various configurations that grasshopper escapements can have. This one utilizes a single pivot. It's made from Kauri and Tasmanian Blackwood.
John Harrison invented the grasshopper movement around 1722.

Attempting to make the escapement now. I took some screenshots and blew them up to take proportional measurements. Hoping that works. What I can't estimate because there are no wide view of the entire Escapement is how long the pendulum is from pivot point to end. That one measurement would be very helpful. Not sure if you are still reading these comments or not. Thanks

Whats the purpose of putting music over an escapement video, dont you wanna let people hear the ticking?

Thank You for the great video on John Harrison's Grasshopper escapement. I don't suppose you'd have plan sets available- or better yet .DXF files for us CNC machinist hacks?

What is beautiful and elegant about a grasshopper escapement operating more with a simple pendulum effect is that the pawls engage when the escapement wheel is almost stationary, ever so smoothly and then it reverses slightly. With a compound pendulum having more contribution to the motion, the engagement is at higher speed and so the impulse of engagement is harder and the wheel reverses a lot due to the momentum in the compound pendulum. How much one decides to amalgamate and combine the proportions of a compound and a simple pendulum in a grasshopper escapement will decide the magnitude of the impulse on pawl engagement. This shown in the video relies solely on the simple pendulum and the engagement is thus optimized, and so beautiful. Congratulations, this gentleman knows what he is doing.

Yes Carmel John Harrison was obviously a genius. Almost all escapements are beautiful. Making all clock mechanisms therefore beautiful. I'm sorry to all the people who have asked for plans. I made this from pictures and bumbled my way through it. I don't feel I am knowledgeable enough to make fail safe plans. All the best in your attempts. Keep experimenting and be patient. Bob

Why is it when ever it comes to any kinetic works there are never any plans to be found?

Try freezing a few frames from this: ruclips.net/video/VePElmBG2DA/видео.html and you should be able to build one...;)
