VölurDoom
Добавлен 2 июл 2014
With a name derived from "völva," a seeress in Norse folklore, Völur are not the kind of band to fulfill faux-pagan longings, neither thematically nor musically. The Toronto based trio is comprised of bassist Lucas Gadke, drummer Justin Ruppel, and experimental electric violinist Laura C. Bates. Together they weave together folk melodies, heavy riffs, and chthonic chants to breed powerful and chilling slabs of meditative doom. Moving between high-tension, plodding chaos, and beautiful pastoral moods, Völur aims to reflect the world of primordial nature inspired by ancient myths and chilling poems of death and heroism. Leaving all those who witness their live shows transfixed and spellbound, the power trio has become one of Canada's premiere forces in heavy music.

Völur - Planter's Song

After a nice day planting my garden in East York, the weather turned windy and grey. Nevertheless I resolved to start a fire and play some banjo. Was inspired to write a tune in a mode I learned from a Kirsten Bråten Berg recording that we used in "Heiemo" on Disir. Also threw in some throat singing for fun because it felt good to do in the wind. Lucas on banjo Speacial guest Eddie on percussion

"Chin Guitar" LOVE that.
Cool! I listened to every word. Fantastic suggestions. Thanks.
Love this rundown!
Hi I just bought my first electric violin. I love metal , but I feel like a lot of distortion effects remove my dynamic range. Do you have any tips for that?
Great video, really great for someone delving deep like me. But I'm curious why you have use the mxr equaliser if you also have the LR Baggs preamp which has a 5 band eq?
Para que tanta cosa??? Mucho de cargar en hotel que toco a diario. 😅 Saludos. Interesante solo preamp eq del ar reverb
UGHHHH THANK YOU FOR THISSSSS
I love the attack you get on the low strings. I’m sure your excellent technique plays a big role, but is there more to it? A particular bow? Another component in your equipment?
it's a miracle I found this.... tysm
Disreguard detractors, the violin is free to evolve dispite what a small minority of devote pureists believe. Rock on.
What a beautiful performance.
There is so much untapped potential with these distorted violin sounds
This was such a treasure trove of information! Really love your enthusiasm for your faves. A lot of pedals I'd never heard of but now are on my list of new pedals to try!
15:36 the future video exclusively about the Empress Zoia will be awesome
Boring
Great setup, I bought Zoia after seeing your video. Any good patches for an electric violin that you can recommend ?
Exceptional demonstration! Thank you so much! My daughter is in band and your video is so helpful!
awesome tutorial -- thank you! You make it clear how much these crazy pedals can add to the base instrument sound.
If I'm using a pickup with an acoustic violin, is a tube amp still okay?
The keyboard amp part is the true. Can't count the times the sound guy wanted me to plug into the PA and not the amp🙄
So awesome.
You pronounced the Ä in Wäldern correctly, but you mispronounced 'Vögel'. Ö is not the same letter as O, it's not pronounced as an o.
Dooooope!! Thats such a cool collaboration! I'm stoked to hear it!
Released on Bonfire night in the UK! Guy Fawkes what a guy :)
really awesome board!
My friends and I are trying to start a punk band with me playing electric violin. i'm having a really hard time because i played for about 12 years, but i am used to symphony violin. do you have any tips on getting into trying different things to go with punk music if that makes sense? or improv? i may just need to practice more and get more comfy
I think for punk specifically it would be great to do some rhythmic chug style patterns which could be as simple as playing the root and 3rd or 3rd and 5th of the chords as 16th or 8th notes. You could also experiment with more of a bluegrass chop style.... if you want to get fancy you should really check out Earl Maneein. I took a lesson with him once and he's a genius - check out this technique: ruclips.net/video/3MxKoWI86eM/видео.html&ab_channel=TracySilverman
This good for violin??? Batter than Zoom A1X Four #kezomusicstudios here
Nice video! Are you still planing on making a video exclusively on the zoia?
Eventually! I'm bad at being a youtube-er but I'll work on a zoia exclusive video and will reply here when I do!
Thanks for the great and very useful presentation! I have a Vector Violin that sounds good. Which amp do you recommend to play with a pedalboard classical, jazz, and rock with distortion. Roland AC 60, fender junior blues, mesa boogie studio 22+, fishman loudbox artist, ...?
I'd say you can't go wrong with the fender blues junior for most situations - the mesa for when you want to be scorching loud. I find tube amps to be amazing for electric violin, I don't love the fishman loudbox.
May I use an EQ pedal instead of a preamp, I mean, does it work as a preamp?
As this electric violin pick up is passive - as most are - and it doesn't have a preamp either a preamp in the chain is ideal if you're going into a PA or in my situation I'm using a tube amp...... if you're looking for a good preamp, I like the L.R Baggs ones. It actually has some EQ settings on it too.
Have you had a chance to play around with the zoia since you posted this video? I’m very curious about use of the zoia with e-violin
Oh heck yeah team Zoia! Not sure if you're already a member, but if not you're cordially invited to join the Empress Zoia Users group on Facebook. Yay, string players with Zoia!
I heard "tube amp is the way to go" and instantly subbed
I love how you boldly go to new and vast spaces!
Found you and your band through this run down. Awesome stuff! I love my Zoia, though it can be tricky at times. Would definitely be interested in maybe not a full run down (as you said, it would take ages) but a selection of patches you've made or others have made that you find useful for your needs. Subbed!
The DooM is real. Precious 🖤🤘💀🤘🖤
Violin with a 100Watt Hiwatt was good enough for David Cross in King Crimson and Simon in Hawkwind! Cool sounds Laura, keep the tube amps alive. Some of your effects remind me of the Warrior on the Edge of Time album 75
So killer!! 🔥🔥🔥
Nice stuff. Do you notice a lag with the pitch fork? I've got a love/hate relationship with a little pog that lag's a hair's breadth in addition to outputting that really digitized sound. Maybe the new ones are better, idk. mm
I do not notice a lag with the pitchfork. However, the way that you are describing the pog reminds me that I felt similar about the new-ish memory boy, I did not love the digitized sound!
@ Cool. Thanks. I'll have to check it out and see how it sounds against the oc-5.
Super cool video. Thx. 👍🤘
Thanks for this cool video! I've already got the Pitchfork for my electric kazoo, might try some of the others too 😀
Hey Laura, when ever I play with electric violinists, I find it difficult because you can't feel it in your chest like you do with an acoustic. What is your recommendation for getting that thump if you're not playing rock or metal?
I understand what you mean, I'm not sure if I can help because I tend to compensate by playing so loud that I can feel the hairs on my legs vibrate 😅 BUT I do run through sets playing the electric violin with no amplification so that I can feel/get comfortable with the very limited vibrations it puts out. In an ideal performance scenario, I use in-ear monitors and I have the mix engineer pan the violin sound to my left ear so that it mimics the experience of hearing/feeling my acoustic violin.
So good! Love this!
Völur is feeling the ACCORDION LOVE!
Very awesome variety of sounds! The new album is fantastic \m/
Thanks so much Jon for listening and supporting us!
So much informative fun!
Thank you Bruce!!! And thanks for sharing!
You have an amazing sound. I discovered Volur from your first rig rundown video when I was researching the idea of adapting my guitar rig for violin. I’ve always wanted to hear a competent violinist playing through any of the six guitar rigs I’ve built.
Thanks so much! Send a pedalboard over and I'll happily take it for a rip ;)
@ Would it be possible for you to send some dry tracks that I could re-amp? The rigs I built were rack rigs for local musicians that I’ve lost contact with over the years. I’m now down to a Fryette GPDI preamp, Eventide H9 & a Mesa/Boogie power amp. I’d just love to hear how the GPDI overdrive colors the violin.
WOW! Never seen pedals plugged into a violin! sounds awesome! Subscribed!
I actually like this 👍
Beautiful piece of music!
Awesome!!!
