Garden Update. New Plants. Dealing with Chipmunks.
May I ask what plants you are overwintering in the pots? Thank you! You have a new subscriber here! Wonderful channel!
Big bluestem, Agastache, comfrey and other perennials. I also have shrubs and trees. Their cold hardiness is definitely getting tested this winter. Thanks for subbing!
Thank you! I'm pretty sure I'll be asking more questions! Lol 😊
Cant hear U😢 I do the same. I use leaves and the evergreen branches that are blown down in the wind storms. Works like a great blanket!
Sorry! The sound is a little low.
@awakenacres 😉👍
Great update!
Thanks!
I wonder how they have progressed? Mine are just sprouting, but I've been soaking and using potting mix. Haven't had a great germination rate so I'm doing a new batch with some gibberellic acid in the soak to see if that improves the germination rate
The ones I got to germinate grew 1-2 feet high. Some of them got nibbled down by rodents. The survivors look good, so I’m happy with that.
Those are some cool plants!
I think so too!
The other videos on air prune beds just plant them very close together as well. One literally put the seeds side by side.
I’ve seen that too. I think I just need to make them deeper.
Deer pressure seems to keep increasing year-on-year at my garden. I'm on the edge of town where people aren't allowed to hunt, I can't exclude them from the perimeter with fencing, so I have to fence things individually now, it's really annoying. Overpopulated deer are a menace (same as humans!).
I live in the country and don’t hunt. I think the critters come to my wildlife haven to avoid the hunters😂. Its an annoyance I’ve learned to live with.
Do you have any seeds to share?
I don’t have seeds to share. I do have trees for sale, but local pickup only in Saline,MI. If you know where mature trees are located, you can collect the dry seed pods in fall/winter.
Wow, learned so much! Thanks for the great videos.
Lots of cool plants!
I was pleased to find your video, as I am looking to get more info on growing Toona Sinensis from seed. As it is now 5 months since you posted your video, I was wondering how you were getting on ? Although I have not tried growing them yet, I have tasted the leaves from a specimen tree over here in the UK and found them to be delicious - although some folk find them a bit too strong in flavour if eaten raw. Nevertheless there is a lot of evidence that they are a) highly nutritious and b) good for your health in a number of ways - which is why they have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries. Anyway, good luck with 🌿growing them & ATB from across the pond (🇬🇧)
I had a problem with rodents but most of them survived and are looking good.
Wow, good job protecting the chickens and ducks!
Not so good. They killed a hen and a duck this weekend. 😢
If you don't want to boil and wait, put seed pods somewhere dry in the cold of winter, then cut the tiniest bottom of the seed off and soak. I did that this year and thought i ruined the seed after it swelled in 12hrs, the seed shot a root within the next 24hrs. Zone 6 high desert, your results may vary
Sounds like another good method for propagating. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing!
Where did you got from hazelnuts for seeds. Planning to build air prune box myself
I got American hazelnuts from my own bushes. European hazelnuts were sourced from Burnt Ridge Nursery in the fall.
I got 3 seeds to germinate with this method. I had better luck in the spring soaking them and putting them in potting mix in a moist seed tray. About 50% germination. Most grew successfully over the summer/fall in pots. I am overwintering them outside this year and will update in the spring. Hopefully they survive!🌿
Your garden looks incredible
Thank you!
How did you plant the hazel seeds? Do you have to scratch them, do you crack them open and plant without the shells, do you soak them? I don't want to do it wrong, any info would help, thanks.
Edible Acres channel is good re growing nuts.
I store them in potting mix outside all winter with hardware cloth as a cover to protect from rodents. In a pot with drainage holes.
how to make black locust without spikes? :D
I assume you mean thorns? As far as I know there isn’t a thornless variety. There are thornless honey locusts though. They are similar to black locusts and I propagate them the same way by seed.
@@awakenacres oh, I didn't know that. Got to propagate. I think that would be my favorite tree in my lands, except those thorns. I make firewood from these trees and those thorns destroy cloths, shoes. Once it even cut fuel line in my car, lol
I can barely hear you.
Nice raptors :-)
Sadly a predator stole her egg on day 27. It probably happened when she left her nest to get food and water.😢
cool :)
Lovely work, thank you for sharing your different methods!!
Your plants look great. I suddenly started having chipmunk problems this year which has severely disrupted my nursery area, normally I'd grown hundreds of nut trees per year in air-prune beds, but those damn things have gotten into them and dug up almost everything I've planted, including some rather precious seeds of American chestnut, seeds from my best timber-type chestnut tree, and others. Sprinkling cayenne pepper all over had no effect, so I'm going to have to do more in the way of physical exclusion (they are small enough to go through chicken wire, which was the first thing I tried when I wasn't sure what was getting in there, at first I thought maybe crows). The joys of trying to grow things! Extremely hot and dry here, too-hope we all get some much needed rain soon.
Yes they are a challenge for sure!
Thanks! Very helpful!
Cool. I bought 50 from Mark this year and they look great. I'm in zone 5 a couple hours NE of Viola. Good point on planting Americans in the row. I did not even though I planted a bunch of American in the area. I will add some American closer to the Hybrid row next season. How are yours looking this year?
How long will these seeds remain viable if stored in a refrigerator. I bought some that are from 2020 from Sheffield's seeds.
You should have decent germination. Its definitely worth a try!
I was just looking to get it. Is it that bad?
Its a plant yih can keep it under control your a human its not that bad.
I have had the same experience with Chinese Wisteria, frustrating. I am on the understanding that Japanese Wisteria does not do this but I wouldn't swear to it.
Do the research on a plant before you buy,it will save you unwanted headaches
This is adorable 😂
Hopefully they will make it , roots are most active in winter so that will be a plus !
Let's hope they simply relocated him or her and didn't harm the poor soul.
Lure it out with some food.
Adorable animal 🖖
Love the quackers in the background!
Your Motherwort ID is correct. I feel the same about it, love the flowers, hate the seed parts. It is a perennial with a fairly good root system.
Sorry for the wind noise. Cold front coming through 🥶. It would also be a good idea to make the air prune bed deeper, perhaps 10 inches high to allow for more root growth.
Do you ship plants, or do only local sales?
I do only local sales at the moment.
did it die ? what happened to it
Offer up cat crunchies and a water source in another part of the yard! Opossums are pretty neat nocturnal animals..haven't seen them at all attack another animal on my property.
cute
Thank you for all the info. Plan on starting some from seeds and cuttings later. Love the video. Thanks
My Grandparents had over 60 chickens at any one time for years, never had an opossum take a laying hen. Use to find them in the laying boxes, sometimes they would take an egg thought, we just left them alone. Grandpa said they are good to have around, as they keep the rats in check.
Usually they do leave the chickens alone, but we did have one kill a hen and a duck.
@@awakenacres I had thought a opossum had taken an old hen once, but it turned out it was a raccoon when we looked at the video tapes.
Please give the possum some eggs; Possums love eggs; Not kill the chickens; My tears are down when I saw this skinny possum; We throw away too much foods; Why not giving the leftover foods to possums; Possums are not hurting people; Everytime I saw Possums moms carrying babies on her back; My heart was broken;
There is plenty of food that the chickens spill that the opossum can eat. I believe it sadly has an illness. I haven’t seen it since this video was taken
Possums love dry cat foods; I have a possum family in my back yard for many years; If you want to keep your chickens and ducks healthy and happy; Please just offer possums some cat foods; Every animal is hungry; We are humans beings are hungry, too; I respect all the wild lifes, but rats are pest, not wild lifes; I like to spend small money and make wild lifes are happy here;
He’s got some long legs 🦵.
That’s a weird lookin chicken
