      @@TheBlueberryFarmer - It depends on the situation, but what I often do is dig out a hole at the center of the mole hill and find one of the openings to that mound. Then when I put the probe into the ground I can find how well centered the probe is. That way I end up very close to being centered on that tunnel. After I the trap set I just throw the dirt I dug out back in the hole and wait......I use three different traps and this is the best by far. 😄

    We’re still 3-4 weeks away here in north Alabama but this is our first year opening for Upick so we are excited about it. Question about pruning - I’ve read that pruning should occur at dormancy but also that some suggest pruning right after harvest. Right after harvest makes sense to me so the plant has time to grow and produce shoots for next years crop. But I’ve also heard it’s a greater likelihood of disease pruning anything in summertime. What’s your thought and when do you prune?

    Dry firing the trap can ruin the catch wires. To unload a set trap, hold the bottom of the trap (near the catch end) and push the top of the trap tight against your body, trip the trap and let it up easy. Also, a little fresh carrot at the bottom of the trap hole before inserting the trap is sometimes helpful in catching stubborn dirt rats.

I didn't notice the one I was talking about with the massive growth was the 'Bless Your Heart' variety. I went out and measured. Last year it was a bush in a pot about 1.5 ft tall. Now it has 5 new shoots off of old growth that extend to 7 ft tall. Yet leaves me to me original inquiry; why such crazy growth yet no new shoots from the ground?

    I have just bought a new property and have gophers. I bought these traps off of Amazon and am waiting for delivery. The technical term for the pointed stick is a dibble. Some folks use dibbles for planting bulbs. I do like the idea of using the auger drill bit for the hard soil. I cannot wait to catch these critters.

    I'm going to have to try that. I'm already planning a used refrigerator worm farm as an expansion of my husbands worm bin in the house. The best place to locate it in in our big chicken yard where there is water and shade. If I did your system the larvae could just fall on the ground and the girls would find them.

    • @TheBlueberryFarmer
      @TheBlueberryFarmer 3 месяца назад

      That’s a great idea. I would recommend putting a couple more tubes in for the larva to craw out of. Only a handful a day find their way out of mine lol

    What a BEAUTIFUL sight!!! I hope that my young plants are eventually productive like that!! Mine are in pots until we can find the right piece of land. It looks like you plant them in slightly mounded soil and then mulch? You must have acidic soil there in Texas!:) We are in north Idaho so mine are mostly mid or late season. How often do you fertilize, and do you use soil acidifier? Do you have a deer fence? Blessings!

      Hey Joyce thanks for taking the time to comment. Our soil ph runs around 6 in our area. I mixed pine bark in the soil when I planted and made hills to plant in. Occasionally I’ll add some sulphur to them to reduce the ph. We don’t have a problem with the deer. They will occasionally nibble a bud or two and the bucks will polish their antlers on a few here and there. I would encourage you to plant more than you think you need so that you can share with the birds and bugs lol I’ll be making a video soon on my planting process as I’m about to plant some more young ones.

    I brought up an Emerald blueberry sucker from Florida to my place in eastern Tenn.I hope it survives the colder climate up here. Gonna give some honeyberries or haskaps a try up here.Theyre said to be easier to grow than blueberries.Time will tell.Thanks for this video!

      Hey Howard thanks for taking the time to comment. I have some friends that live down by the Texas coast that have some success with the Emerald variety. We’re about four hours north of them and it gets a little too cold for them on our farm. Hope you have better luck in your area 👍
