This channel will be about general aviation from actual flights, simulated flights and EFBs. Smitty was the nick name they called my dad, also a pilot. My step dad was a CFI, my mom was a pilot as was my uncle. I am blessed to belong to a great flying club with some amazing pilots who love to fly and take great care of the plane. I fly a Cessna 172M with Garmin G5s, working auto pilot and an upgraded 180 HP engine.
What is it like to be a Safety Pilot?
In this video, I am flying with a CFII (Justin) as his Safety Pilot as he shoots the RNAV Approach into N81 for runway 3. A safety pilot acts as the eyes of a pilot flying with a view limiting device-to meet the requirement to see and avoid other aircraft “regardless of whether an operation is conducted under instrument flight rules or visual flight rules.” Section 91.109(c). During this flight I will be working the radios while he flies the plane.

Hot day in the 90s flying home from Martinsburg VA to Martin State Airport. In panel Stratus battery died, switched to my back up Sentry Plus, busy ATC flight, cleared through BWI class bravo - kind of - and when reporting current position to tower, they knew I was practicing an RNAV Approach

Shooting the RNAV GPS approach into KCBE and going missed to KMRB. The density altitude at KCBE was over 3,000' and with a mountain straight ahead at takeoff, we decided to go missed to Martinsburg KMRB. A hour plus flight edited down to just over 5 mins.

What did we do before ADS-B? Unbelievable the amount of planes passing by less then five miles and cant see them. I have a good friend over at MTN, he flies a Cessna 182 and a Sundowner. I forgot what hangar Les keeps his planes I'll have to check with him. Thanks for sharing the flight.
I see them on ForeFlight way before ATC tells me. I only wish I would have done Flight Following more before I did my IFR Practical, it would have been less embarrassing!

Yep, GPS 14 is 700' MDA. Always enjoy flying the beach here at the home base in Ocean City. Enjoyed the video!

This was a great video! It would be great if you could do just one other camera angle, like a angle showing you in the cockpit. That would be especially powerful when you were being vectored for that ILS. It would be great to see you at work in the cockpit making that happen. Great video though, definitely informative.

Got another camera, but I'll be mounting it outside the plane - I wonder if viewers prefer a wing view or mounted under the tail?

No problem, if you plan on pursing your IFR then ask your instructor at some point to include Flight Following as it will get you used to talking to ATC
Nice clear picture! Yeah, you get the prop, but nothing that a prop filter wouldn’t take care of.
