I should have thought that Trent's declaration of love to Mabel - one of the most moving passages of romantic expression I have encountered - wouldn't sound right unless it were read by a male voice. How I love entering Thorndyke’s world. Secure, ordered, infallible. As a craftswoman/artist the clever arcane methods used in Polton’s workshop - moulds, photography, gelatine castings and chemistry are so intriguing. I think that the difficulty with this narration--is the quality of the recording. The deeper voices, particularly, have a fuzziness and a buzz.

wow, the reason why I enjoy these books from another era is all in this production. The values, language and customs are somewhat different but human motives are very much the same in any time.

Well, I disagree - and think you do this lady a great disservice - I admit the opening growly voice was a surprise at first but I found this lady made an excellent job of narration - her pace, emphasis and atmosphere was absolutely spot on, so much that it was easy to become engrossed in the story, recognising each character as they reappeared - I'm near the end of this and have added epilogue of Cleek to listen to next and will certainly search for more Ruth Golding narrations. Admittedly there are some pretty dire librivox recordings - this however, is one of the very best I've heard. I usually prefer listening to male voiced narrations - love Bitesized Audio Classics for one but this lady gets my wholehearted approval (Anne Fletcher, for other narrations, does too)

I agree a male voice would be better. I'd also prefer a straight read. I don't care for different voices for different characters. At least not here.

Agree. Sadly the narrator’s voice doesn’t match the story. Needs stronger, voice, (preferably male).
