The date on Edward`s pocketwatch is "3.Oct.11" , that`s October 3rd, 1911 which was the day their mother died and Edward and Alphonse(Mainly Edward though and he is super guilty about it) arrogantly committed the taboo of Human Transmutation to bring their recently deceased mother back to life and as you can probably guess from the Elric boys` current condition it didn`t go too well.
