I did the same thing with a 1940 Liberty half that was very tarnished with a chip on the rim. Figured it's only worth the silver now so might as well make it look shiny.

This is circulated "junk" silver. It doesnt hurt the value to clean it. It doesnt help the value either... it just looks better.

Destroys them , never clean them.

And YES, any dealer or experienced numistmatist can easily see it's been cleaned and every 3rd party grading service would reject this coin has harshly cleaned AND keep your money for the effort. NEVER EVER EVER NEVER CLEAN YOUR COINS. It automatically reduces the value of the coin(s). I've been in numismatics for over 25+ years.

I would ask a dealer if this is acceptable. What about using "ultra sound" to clean a coin? Some collectors will not accept a coin that has been cleaned. Although you could do it if the coin was to be given as a gift rather that sold to a collector.

Anyone that knows a little bit about coins, would know in a heartbeat that this coin was cleaned. Baking soda is an abrasive and it takes almost "nothing" to scratch a coin. You kept rubbing your fingers on the coin, to get the dirt out. Use even a small magnifying glass and you'll see scratches everywhere. The ONLY time I would use baking soda is if I had a coin that is not worth much ay all and you know you'll never sell it. The best way to clean a silver coin is by using eZest. It's liquid and you dip the coin into it. I have sent many coins in to get graded after using it, and not 1 single coin came back cleaned! Don't EVER use a toothbrush or any device to clean a coin. The scratches under magnification will be everywhere and you just ruined the value of your coin. I hope this helps you newbies. Best of luck.

So, how much baking soda and hot water? And would a soft toothbrush be useful? Also, is this a "soft, clean"? In other words, would a trained dealer be able to tell that it had been cleaned? Also, don't forget about the rim. It still looked dirty.
