Movie Trailers are Genuinely Awful | A Gene Production
Love them or hate them, movie trailers have gotten a lot of flack in recent years for numerous reasons, mostly related to ruining the initial viewing experience of a film for one reason or another. Today, we'll explore some of these reasons, from this gene's subjective opinion, and see what exactly makes a "bad trailer," and how bad trailers can affect a person's moviegoing experience.

Screenlife - Cinema's Newest Genre or Horror's Latest Gimmick? | A Gene Production
Просмотров 868Год назад
Most of us have heard of screenlife, even if we haven't heard the specific term. It's the "computer-screen" style of filmmaking which tells a story from the point of view of a computer. It's variously described as a film genre, film technique or just a short-lived gimmick that will die out as quick as 4D Aroma-Scope scratch n' sniff cards. Most of us probably know the technique from the 2014 fi...

In 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic, Eurovision Song Contest, the longest-running annual televised music competition in the world, was cancelled for the first time in its sixty-five year history. The Death of Atmosphere | A Gene Production

What killed Barbarian's atmosphere? As quite a polarising film, 2022's "Barbarian" has received it's share of negative feedback, with many attributing it's shortcomings to misplaced humour, plot holes and nonsensical plot. As someone who really enjoyed the film, this gene has a different view on things. Despite being able to maintain quite a stable and claustrophobic atmosphere for much of its ...

Film Remakes Were Always a Bad Idea | A Gene Production
Просмотров 341 тыс.Год назад
These days it may sometimes feel like all film media is a remake, reboot or reimagining of an old story, maybe reworked for a modern audience - or simply just a shot-for-shot remake in every sense of the word. This is by no means a new phenomenon, however, and has been around in some form or another since the very beginning of the film industry, since the very first film camera was placed in th...
The Barren Past & Hopeful Future of Irish-Language Cinema | A Gene Production
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.2 года назад
In 1978, the first feature film in the Irish language, "Poitín," was released in cinemas. Following this, there were very few attempts at making any further films in the Irish-language for the remainder of the 20th century and into the early 21st century. Despite this, smaller filmmaking efforts did manage to persist during this time, in the form of short films and dubs. This was the status quo...
How Professor Layton Solved The Video Game Movie | A Gene Production
Просмотров 11 тыс.2 года назад
Widely panned and discredited for decades, the "video game adaptation" genre of movie was a critical failure since its inception with 1993's "Super Mario Bros." However, this would change in 2009, with the acclaimed "Professor Layton" franchise making the leap to the big screen. Matching the series' pre-established atmosphere, art style and narrative, "The Eternal Diva" was perhaps the first th...
Chicken Little is an Underappreciated Gem | A Gene Production

In 2005, Walt Disney Feature Animation released their first CG animated feature, often regarded as their worst animated film of all time, "Chicken Little" is a landmark in Disney's mixed production history. Simultaneously, however, "Chicken Little" may be one of Disney's most interesting films, arriving at a deeply uncertain and crucial moment in Disney's history, and which will remain relevant...
DUEL: Horror, Paranoia & Masculinity on the Open Road | A Gene Production

Rational or irrational, being followed without explanation is a pretty scary thought. With this in mind, horror films with this concept, like "It Follows" or "The Terminator" ought to be petrifying. However, there exists a low-budget action film from 1971 which pretty much nails the premise. Stephen Spielberg's directorial debut, "Duel," entertains the idea of being followed without any explana...
The Most Accurate Portrayal of Ireland in History | A Gene Production

In 1999, the world's most influential filmmakers came together with one singular vision; to create the most accurate portrayal of the island of Island ever put to screen. Alright but try to defend the message of The Little Mermaid and The Emperor's New Groove. The Little Mermaid's message at face value seemed to be like "don't be stupid and sell your soul to the devil" for me. The original story is far superior and I wish Disney leaned more into that direction. The Emperor's New Groove has the biggest asshole of a character as protagonist. And the side characters including the villain are more likeable. He went from total asshole to a good person in like 2 minutes. A child being very sensitive for this type of characters can be done with the movie before it is over. The Emperor is unlikeable for like 50 minutes! Out of what, 107 of the movie!? Believe me, I know. I can't stand these types of characters. How am I supposed to learn something in a movie where the Protaganist is basically King Joffrey? I went from hating the movie, to being convinced to watch the whole movie, to hating the movie and its fanbase so much I destroyed physical media. I would normally never do that. Even with my second most hated media. This movie causes violence to easily triggered people and should be lost media. Seriously, in no world should the movie have been able to survive. What I liked about chicken little ARE all of the references, the messages it conveys and that it shows that (yes indeed) fathers could be bad parents. I have a father I love but a terrible father figure, so I relate to that. I do admit that the message of don't believe anything someone says is conveyed poorly. However, it also shows that when someone can prove they were right all along, it's important to share it with people. And that people shouldn't be easily distracted while you're trying to present live evidence. At least, that's what I've got out of it. And lastly, somehow I relate more to the characters in chicken little (as a fellow childhood loser) than to Kuzco or Ariel. In The Emperor's New Groove I relate to Yzma the most. Yes, a villain. In The Little Mermaid, I relate to Triton and I hated how they made him scary before seeing how happy Ariel is with a human. Triton is the true main character and Yzma was right for wanting to kill off the emperor. Oh, by the way, where's the New Groove part? Couldn't find it. That's how much I think other movies are overpraised and Chicken Little is the most underrated Disney movie of all time. Weird how that turned out.
The limitations of the past gave movies magic. If they are reimaginings with few call backs, then they might work
I clicked because of the thumbnail. I think we now know where the moon from The legend of Zelda Majora's mask got the idea from. That moon with a face looks creepy.
Funny thing is, I didn’t knew for the longest time that _Trip to the Moon_ was remade and I actually watched the remake first when I was a child. So when I watched the Original much, much later, I was confused that the Capsule *didn‘t* fly into the moon‘s mouth and assumed a Mandela-effect.
The excursion to the moon moon took the idiom "bite the bullet" a bit too literally 💀
amazing video
Where are you from that pronounces it “fillum?”

As someone who swears by “don’t watch a trailer, it’s better” even I done got got recently by The Creator. Fine movie. Wasn’t what was advertised at all
Wonderful video
3:37 Thomas Edison also pirated melies' work because he couldn't match Melies' cinematic creativity because Edison never had a unique creative idea of his own, he only ever stole someone else's idea and patented it so they never made any money on it
Remakes have always and will always exist. It's a tried and true way to immortalize a good story while also applying the story to different elements of different cultures for the time period and location that it's being retold in or even just to give a different perspective within the same time and culture of the "original". The oldest piece of writing, The Epic of Gilgamesh, is literally a retelling of story that had been retold for 1000 years before it was written. The only reason Disney's animated movie Cinderella exists is because an ancient Chinese story was retold for thousands of years all across the world. Snow White is a retelling. Sleeping Beuty is a retelling. People complaining about remakes are just saying they don't like change but in way too many words.
I think Iwatched the remake of _Trip to the Moon_ before the Original and, not knowing the History, I was confused why the Rocket flew into the Moons' eye instead of in its mouth. For a while I chalked this up to the Mandela-effect before I read up on what actually happened.
"Filumum"?
Does this narrator pronounce "film" as "filumum"?
Only chads understand Chicken Little. And it represents how the world really is. People really are like this. It's funny because it's true.
*DAVID CRONENBERG'S 'THE FLY'. _I rest my case._
15:23 while i love the series, im not surprised they were able to transcribe the video game to movie formula because of the genre. i find it easier to convert a visual novel to a movie rather than an action or platformer since visual novels tend to be a lot more story driven however, this isnt to suggest Level-5 relied on this to make a good, video-based form of media. ive heard good things of their megaton musashi TV series
Wow, I didn't know Georges Melies was even a real person. The reason I watched this is because I just watched the movie "Hugo".
I think of the movie as just immense sarcasm
Great Video! Wishing you lots of success

If only the narrator would read faster.
Don't listen to pansies like Mr Enter who think this movie is bad and "meanspirited"
You could reasonably make the argument that either Muybridge's "Horse in Motion" or Le Prince's "Roundhay Garden" was the first motion picture ever made. Others prefer to begin their histories of the motion picture with the Edison/Dickson invention of the kinetoscope. The very first kinetoscope was "Monkeyshines No. 1," which was immediately followed by a remake, "Monkeyshines No. 2." I daresay in almost every respect the remake was superior to the original, although the original rather brilliantly if completely accidentally conjured up a ghost-like image, which if you think about it for a second is kind of a perfect metaphor for what the cinema does. "Monkeyshines No. 3" is apparently the cinema's first lost film - if it indeed ever existed. ("Monkeyshines" means fooling around, by the way.) The Lumiere Brothers first cinematograph was "Workers Leaving the Factory," which they remade a number of times. One of the sequels was mistaken for the original for most of the cinema's history. Factory Gate films became something of an established genre in the early cinema and the ones made was James Kenyon and Sagar Mitchell (later dubbed "The Electric Edwardians" after they were rediscovered) are almost infinitely more beautiful and moving than the similar ones made by the Lumieres 5-to-10 years previously. "Alfred Butterworth and Sons, Glebe Mills, Hollinworth" (1901) is particularly joyous and poignant. Great stuff!
yoo this channel and especially this video is need more attention, really this content is so good deserve more views!
Passengers (2016) got me, they with held so much from the trailer that the film was arguably a different genre. It's one of my favourite films and a large part of that is because the trailer didn't spoil anything or give away key plot elements and set pieces. I won't ruin it, but it is not "2 people wake up on a spaceship early", it's SOOOOO much more than that - and that kind of doesn't even happen either
And this folks is why I don't watch trailers anymore. No expectations to meet
Hey, just so you know, the live action part from the Spongebob trailer was taken from The Hunt For Red October, hence the red sub in the bathtub :)
I never knew that! I’m gonna have to add that one to my watchlist asap! :D
I too was misled by the trailer for The Batman. It seemed like it would be action packed but it was a slower movie. Not a bad movie, just that I expected something different
I got no words for this video cause I don't know what movie is going to be coming out in case of a MOVIE TRAILER🤦♂️ it's like you're saying that we don't need movie trailers then what's the point of knowing what movies are coming out? You might be overlooking at this but it's not that big of a deal. Well hope you get a lot a sucribers. EDIT: also i didn't watch the video cause i though you were complaining about little things. I'm not a hater just someone i had to get out my chest
No worries. I do make a case for good trailers in the last part of the video if you want to skip to that bit instead. It’s okay if not though, no hard feelings :)
@@AGeneProduction oh it's okay, these days it's like when everyone is complaining about something at this point it's starting to feel like a hate speech or something
Not at all. I do enjoy film trailers and consider them a skilled art form, to condense aspects of a feature film into a cohesive two-minute trailer. It’s very impressive. There are just a lot of aspects I feel can be improved about trailers, since a lot of them have been misleading or just straight-up lying about the movie. I understand your point though and appreciate the comment.
@AGeneProduction well you're welcome. Well there are a lot of good trailers done well especially with the music and by misleading you mean that showing spoilers to a audience to go watch a movie? lol
Your a fellow Irish RUclipsr like me, respect 😎

Not watching trailers anymore has improved my life in ways I can't express
I can’t relate, but hope to one day!
Happy Death Day (if that's the name forgot honestly) spoiled just about most of the plot in the second movie, had me a little pissed, they also revealed the best death.
I think BvS was the first time I recognized that a movie trailer was bad. Probably because the movie it spoiled was also bad. Civil War has a similar cop-out ending but I still went to see it in theatres because the trailers looked awesome. BvS on the other hand...
Seeing Wonder Woman and Doomsday in the trailer killed any bit of anticipation I had for BvS. It genuinely rivals Cast Away in terms of “amount of plot given away in the trailer.” Poor form.
@@AGeneProductionokay? I'm trying to understand what you're saying here
@@AGeneProductionalso Wonder Woman was a great character in that movie to appear
I do like to see a good fil-lum
You and me both! I’m fond enough of the old fillummaking, now.
@@AGeneProduction Great video btw. Rise of the War of The Planets of the Apes really irked my nips as well and I haven't had a second viewing. Might change that
Thanks for the nice comment. It’s a good conclusion, and I’d always recommend watching it again just tempering your expectations not to expect an action blowout. Glad you enjoyed :)
I also hate that thing Sony does where the first 2 seconds of their trailers is a teaser of the trailer that's literally about to play, followed by <MOVIE TITLE> TRAILER STARTS NOW.
It’s annoying but I’m fairly certain it’s just a pre-roll for those skippable ads on RUclips videos. The moment we get those pre-rolls in cinema screenings, it’s all over…
@@AGeneProduction We have those for Sony trailers in theaters where I'm from.
Gotta give War of the Planet of the Apes a 2/5, not enough monke.
I did not need reminding of kangaroo jack... the wounds have not healed, and I have had 5 years of therapy.
Everybody needs to be reminded of Kangaroo Jack every now and then, just to appreciate how good we have it nowadays.
And it happened twice within the same year! Snow Dogs with Cuba Gooding, Jr. had talking dogs in the trailer, but in the movie? Nope. It was a dream.
@AGeneProduction what's your point here
This is a major reason why I don’t watch trailers anymore. Cinema can be so great. Yet often it is dissapointing.
I'm not sure about being "disappointing"
Terminator Genisys was the trailer that did me in for good, after that massive John Connor spoiler I made a hard and fast rule to never watch a trailer for anything I wanted to see again.
I still can’t understand how on Earth it was approved! That’s a spoiler worth four decades of movies, no wonder it backfired!
