    @Rocket City HEMA - Andrew Lonnergan's book compliments Page very well, it lacks the principles and theory of Page but it has plays and exercises using a very similar system and adds certain unique techniques like locks & pummeling with the hilt, draw&saw cuts, parrying using the basket,a bit of advice for fighting dragoons and what not.

    This was great! Pretty much my exact interpretation as well. I agree about Page’s distance too. Books like Lonnergan and Ferdinand generally teach you to fight from first distance really well. I feel like Page, especially with the emphasis on traversing, is teaching how to fight from half sword. That includes the focus on timing the guard, pausing and waiting, leg cuts, etc.

    Good morning sir I have a question so in fencing in general the hands move first then the feet but I’m having a little trouble when using a passing step my strike tends to land a lot faster than my foot can catch up so my question is in a passing step should the strike and the foot lane at the same time?

    I have a version of that sword called a Musician's sword. The blade extends only about 3 inches beyond the end of the fuller, making it easier to wear for a musician with a drum or a Sax horn. I firmly believe they came up with these swords by taking broken NCO swords such as yours and grinding a new spear point over the broken blade.

    What are your thoughts on using hanging guards (+linear footwork) for arming sword? Like how William Hope recommends using hanging guards for smallsword against broadswords or sabre in his New method. Would that improve the chances of the arming sword against the sabre? (Probably not the later century bowl hilt types, but perhaps against early knucklebow sabres)

    • @rocketcityhema671
      @rocketcityhema671 Месяц назад

      It can certainly buy you some time, any sword using a hanging guard/prime parry will be an integral part of the playbook. The biggest danger is that the hand is very exposed and it is somewhat familiar to the saber user. We don't want to be playing their game and using a piece of it opens up many devices for them.

    Good explanation of armor value and weapon usage. I really hope I can make it to your event at some point. It just sounds like so much fun. What is the draw weight of the bows you are firing the dorp arrows with? Was Cam's helmet the Bareena Emporium sturmhaube? Sorry, not familiar enough with the rap-shot, other than I know that it is something the SCA likes to teach. What is the prohibition for? Safety, in order to protect from too hard a hit?

    • @rocketcityhema671
      @rocketcityhema671 3 месяца назад

      Would love to have you come out, it's a grand time. The bows are 25-50 lbs draw at 28 inches. Yes indeed it was, a good helmet once you sort out a liner. The prohibition is for two reasons. 1, safety. It's safer in SCA rattan fighting because they all wear steel helmets, most of our shield users in melee are on the lighter armored side and often in fencing masks. A rap shot to the back of the head is very dangerous in these conditions. The second reason is priority, some of the rules of any event I run are to encourage behaviors. Rather than trying to throw wrap shots (especially the rib one I demonstrated) I would rather fighters work to seek thrusts or wrestle at close distance. These both line up with the armor values anyway since cutting a gambeson with 1 hand does nothing and wrap shotting a steel helmet also does nothing.

    How long was the haft on the 2 handed axe? I’m planning to bring one, and planning on buying the 5’8 shaft off of purple heart armory, and I’m wondering if I will need to shorten that at all

    • @rocketcityhema671

      The Dane Axe? they aren't terribly long, but as long as the haft isn't too heavy then 5,8 should be fine.

  • @frankheninja1
    @frankheninja1 3 месяца назад

    Additionally, in Lesson 2 Page says to stop his outside, and recover to a hanging then stop with a St George’s. To me, this reads as a small tempo pause between the outside stop and the St George’s parry, rather than a double cut. I do agree that you should parry that outside with a hanging tho, as the point of the lesson is learning the hanging and St. George’s guards and if you don’t parry with a hanging here, then the only time you use it in the play is to guard with it not actually parry.

  • @frankheninja1
    @frankheninja1 3 месяца назад

    Interesting interpretation thank you for this! Is there a reason you opted to use a more regimental style for one side of the drill and a Page style for the other? Having to transition between wide and narrow would pretty radically change the function of the adversary role.

    • @rocketcityhema671
      @rocketcityhema671 3 месяца назад

      Of course, thank you for watching. Yes, I decided that given the one sided nature of the early lessons descriptions, the style of the antagonist doesn't really matter much and to ensure my students had less to worry about, I have them use their more acclimated regimental movements so they can focus on prompting their fellow students into doing the right thing rather than worry about it themselves. Especially with movement during the lessons.

    Moving from outside to inside for me feels more like swinging the body back than a step off. What is your take on the type of broadsword? I know Paul Wagner suggests a heavy duty sword is the only kind that makes sense for the body mechanics.

    • @rocketcityhema671
      @rocketcityhema671 4 месяца назад

      I don't buy into that at all. I won't say that a heavier sword doesn't of course benifit from more torque being put on it, but any weapon in the hand can utalise this mechanic to good effect. I will also say that the broadening up when guarding the outside/top is something nice to cultivate for when you're against someone who'll throw extra, my footage from the Midwinter Armizare I used this concept to avoid leg shots. It also should not be overly fixated on as I said in the vid, this is an additional piece to be put onto our already existing moveset and if it's not needed, don't employ it.

  • @frankheninja1
    @frankheninja1 4 месяца назад

    Another aspect to consider that makes Page and sources like Page utilize more offline footwork is that these systems have a direct tie to 18th century stage gladiator combat. Gladiators would often fight with mixed weapons. It makes sense that they would opt for a style of outside guard that is more universally protective from things like quarterstaves and two handed swords, in addition to heavier broadswords and cudgels.

    • @rocketcityhema671
      @rocketcityhema671 4 месяца назад

      Quite possibly, and it certainly comes in clutch when you meet a fighter with a beastly outside throw.

    • @frankheninja1
      @frankheninja1 4 месяца назад

      @@rocketcityhema671 I use Page as my primary guiding source and have had the chance to compete in mixed weapons events that allow polearms and spears. I can attest that the wide stance was highly effective at collecting blows with heavy weapons. Way more than a typical saber-style outside, which is frankly pretty structural weak even against a particularly strong regular sword blow.
