François-Joseph Gossec - Music from opera "The Triumph of the Republic, or Camp at the Grand Prix"

François-Joseph Gossec was a French composer of operas, string quartets, symphonies, and choral works. The son of a small farmer, Gossec was born at the village of Vergnies, then a French exclave in the Austrian Netherlands, now in Belgium. Showing an early taste for music, he became a choir-boy in Antwerp. He went to Paris in 1751 and was taken on by the composer Jean-Philippe Rameau. He followed Rameau as the conductor of a private orchestra kept by the fermier général Le Riche de La Poupelinière, a wealthy amateur and patron of music. Gradually he became determined to do something to revive the study of instrumental music in France.

The beginning is magical. I'll have Scarlatti next to Bach and Vivaldi.
This is good - I like the dynamic contrast in the second movement. It is however, only the first two parts of a larger work by Charles Avison. He appropriated themes by D. Scarlatti & used some others of his own to make superb stuff. Avail yourself of the opportunity to hear some (most?) by Café Zimmermann; an unlikely name for a very accomplished ensemble. I especially enjoy their interpretation of Concerto #3 in D, in which the third movement is rendered, "Amoroso."

Quite Mozartian...The oboe-clarinet duetto could easily be deemed to be a piece of young Wolfgang. If you add the violin more graceful it becomes. Quite a "gift", merci, grazzie, obrigado, thank you.
FYI - It seems Sammartini was born between 18 and 23 of January of 1700 - according to a church manuscipt found in Milan, 2 years ago. May be so, may not, just a curosity.

Pour l'auteur, cette pièce n'est pas de Domenico Scarlati mais de Charles Avison. C'est le 1er mouvement du concerto grosso n°5, parmi 12 qu'il composa vers 1740 sur des thèmes des sonates pour clavecin de Domenico. Le site IMSLP qui référence la correspondance entre les mouvements des concertos d'Avison et les sonates de Scarlati ne trouve pas de coïncidence pour ce mouvement. Il serait donc d'Avison. Pour l'interprétation, c'est celle de Neville mariner, semble-t-il, au violon solo Iona Brown et L'academy de St Martin in the fields. On peut remarquer que cette belle et ample interprétation est la seule à peu près respectueuse du tempo indiqué par Avison. On trouve sur internet quelques autres interprétations hystériques de ce mouvement pourtant indiqué LARGO sur la partition. People have different preferences and I like his style.
The oboe solo which begins at 5:15 is otherworldly; incredibly original, imaginative and often complex.
