Online Lecture September 2024: Sophie Marnette
Imagine a text that does not quote or refer to anybody’s speech or thoughts… A few examples come to mind: technical texts such as scientific papers, legal documents, instruction manuals and textbooks may not contain any. But if we try to imagine a narrative - oral or written - or an argumentative discourse (press article, political discussion, etc.) without any speech or thought presentation, it is difficult to think of an example. Indeed the way we perceive a story, the reasons we do (or do not) empathise with the narrator or the characters, the bases on which we do (or do not) find a story realistic or entertaining are largely dependent on the way speech and thoughts are presented in th...

My sincere thanks for creating this astonishing and breathtaking video. As an Emeritus Oxford Professor of Early Medieval History, now living far away in my retirement, this video has brought back an absolute flood of memories. Most of the many decades of my academic career was within the analogue era, which often required great patience - and foot walking to access a particular manuscript - if one was lucky !!! These days, I am able to view items of interest with previously limited access many stunning manuscripts via , amongst others, the increasingly impressive digital collections, such as The Bodleian Online resource. Thank you once again - wonderfully presented by all involved !!!!!! :)

As @orglancs says, what do you do to access these books if you're not a student or teacher? I am an independent researcher and bookbinder doing my own studies to learn.

What an absolute treasure trove! The assumption seems to be that any possible users are going to be students from the university. Are these collections open to external users, for example an independent researcher and writer such as myself? And if they are, what sort of ID or reference is required?

A valuable talk, thank you Daniel. Speaking specifically with colonial reparations in mind, but also more generally, I believe if we (humanity) are to calculate a value for the negative actions undertaken in the past, fairness & accuracy can only be reached if we also calculate a value for the positive effects of those & associated activities. Humanity, now aware of knowledge transfer, intellectual property, colonialism did bring intellectual advancement to the cultures who suffered the negative aspects of its action. Not wanting to deny that people were wronged, I feel it only correct to subtract the value of positivity from the value of negativity.

Hello I am tremendously apologetic as I missed the recorded lecture of Dr Daniel Butt however in essence I am of the opinion that with regard to the war between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Ukraine the levies and reparations in total should amount to the damage and suffering of essentially Ukrainian people as the same manner that the Russians feel that their territorial sovereinity as the supreme power of the Warsaw Pact the Ukrainians do have the liberty to join either NATO as a sovereign nation or accede to the requirements of the OECD for the sake of their citizens as did the Polish or the Taiwanese so that the reparations which could as high as $100,000,000,000 should accrue to Ukraine and the Russian Federation should be obligated to pay such reparation and comply with International Law accordingly, thank you

I am intrigued by the manner in which you can discuss and appreciate concepts of Pure Mathematics by utilizing Hagfish or other health related knotts as it translates to appreciation of health issues from a standpoint of Pure Mathematics and I find that to be some brilliant appreciation of Pure Mathematics😄😄😃

Hello Professor Jason Lotay I have come to realize that you were part of the University of California at Berkeley and I was enrolled with the University of California at Berkeley Extension Program so that I traveled to Berkeley regularly as for this duration I am enrolling with the 1+1 MBA program and the Bachelor in Civil Law and I derive my facility for Mathematics from my Philosophy course and I am fascinated by the Knotty Problems course as it integrates philosophical and geophysical standpoints on how to discuss and appreciate Pure Mathematics and if I had no time constraints I would desire to read for your Pure Mathematics course and good luck on your future endeavors

I had an account with the British Heart foundation so that health issues are essentially of some importance to me as such I may be fortunate to read for such more extensively on health courses such as Mesolimbic Dopamine Pathway or Unified theory of Dopamine or Two Step Behavioral Task as even for one in Africa as I reside in Botswana we are predisposed to the complexities of health issues and it is distressing to be informed that a country such as Zimbabwe has a high incidence of neonatal mortality of that the inevitable food insecurity would adversely impact countries such the Sudan or Somalia which are in our continent such that the war in the Ukraine has as much impact in Africa as it does in Asia as we are just as adversely impacted, thank you.

I studied Romanticism as a short course at the University of California at Berkeley-Extension programs where I was awarded an A on my course however it would be more stimulating to read for such from a European standpoint and in this sense from the renowned University of Oxford so that you could facilitate my enquiry for such by expeditiously declaring the issuance of my Oxford MBA or 1+1 MBA program in 2022 or by some misfortune in 2023

I am a great fan of Isaac Newton and by extension of the Romantic Movement since commencement so that even Cambridge renowned scholars such as Coleridge and Wordsworth are within my reach with regard to scholasticism as I myself I am as much of a recluse as they all are presupposed as such my bias toward the renowned Balliol College does not emanate primarily from my bias toward the work of Sir Adam Smith in his books The Wealth of Nations and Theory of Moral Sentiment so that I would ordinarily be predisposed to my natural assertion as such so that my 1+1 MBA program in 2022 should be issued soon so that I can relish such an experience and fortitude that I always dream off, thank you

I was delighted to be informed that Mr Boris Johnson was fortunate to escape the rath of the Tories as imaged as in the past only the Tories could determine the result of the Conservative Party vote as Boris Johnson emerged victorious on the election as they emerged recently pertaining to the Tory vote as Boris Johnson was also a favorite among the Tories to emerge victorious so to that extent the Tories and the University of Oxford also emerged victorious as evident, thank you
