    I have n AKC female semi med sized WestGerman Work/Show Shepherd .... Extremely intelligent, loyal, social friendly to humans(maybe not other dogs), and able to perform many tasks that work and show Sheps can do... Unfortunately, she deals with the hip issues of somewhat looseness in her joints

    • @Pet-Code
      @Pet-Code 3 месяца назад

      It sounds like you have a wonderful and talented German Shepherd with some hip issues. Here are a few recommendations to help manage and improve her condition: Veterinary Care 1. Regular Check-ups: Ensure she has regular veterinary visits to monitor her hip condition. 2. X-rays: Periodically get her hips X-rayed to track any changes in her hip joints. Diet and Supplements 1. Balanced Diet: Feed her a balanced diet to maintain an ideal weight and reduce stress on her joints. 2. Joint Supplements: Consider supplements like glucosamine, chondroitin, and omega-3 fatty acids to support joint health. Exercise and Activity 1. Low-Impact Exercise: Engage her in low-impact activities like swimming or controlled walking to strengthen her muscles without stressing her joints. 2. Physical Therapy: Consult a veterinary physical therapist for exercises that can help improve her joint stability and muscle strength. Home Environment 1. Comfortable Bedding: Provide supportive and comfortable bedding to relieve pressure on her joints. 2. Avoid Slippery Floors: Use rugs or mats to prevent her from slipping, which can exacerbate hip issues. Medications and Treatments 1. Pain Management: Discuss pain management options with your vet, which may include anti-inflammatory medications. 2. Alternative Therapies: Consider acupuncture or laser therapy as additional options for managing pain and improving mobility. Monitoring and Adjustments 1. Activity Monitoring: Keep an eye on her activity levels and adjust as needed to ensure she’s not overexerting herself. 2. Regular Assessments: Regularly assess her condition and adapt care routines based on her changing needs. By providing consistent care and making adjustments as needed, you can help manage her hip issues and ensure she enjoys a happy and active life.

    Why should he get to sleep uninterrupted? He wakes me up at night and there's not lying in the morning.

    • @Pet-Code
      @Pet-Code 6 месяцев назад

      I understand your frustration with your German Shepherd waking you up at night. While there's no guarantee they'll never interrupt your sleep again, there are steps you can take to encourage them to sleep through the night. However, it's important to approach this issue with empathy and patience. Here are some reasons why uninterrupted sleep is important for dogs, including German Shepherds: Health: Just like humans, dogs need sufficient sleep for physical and mental well-being. It helps with: Brain development and memory: Adequate sleep allows dogs to process information and consolidate memories. Physical recovery: Sleep repairs tissues and restores energy, essential for active breeds like German Shepherds. Immune system: Good sleep strengthens the immune system, making dogs less prone to illness. Behavior: When sleep-deprived, dogs can become: Irritable and anxious: This can lead to destructive behavior like chewing or barking. Less focused and trainable: Their ability to learn and obey commands may be diminished. Prone to accidents: Tired dogs may have less control over their bladders and bowels. Addressing the Issue: 1. Rule out medical issues: Consult your veterinarian to rule out any underlying medical conditions that might be causing your dog's nighttime restlessness. 2. Exercise and mental stimulation: Ensure your dog gets enough physical and mental exercise during the day to tire them out before bedtime. Regular walks, playtime, and training sessions are crucial. 3. Establish a consistent sleep routine: Create a bedtime routine that involves calming activities like quiet playtime, brushing, and offering a calming chew toy. Feed them their last meal a few hours before bedtime. 4. Create a comfortable sleeping environment: Provide a cozy bed in a quiet and dark area away from distractions. 5. Ignore whining and barking: While it's tempting to give in to their demands, this reinforces the behavior. Do not offer attention or rewards until they're calm and quiet. 6. Crate training: Consider crate training, as crates can provide a sense of security and comfort for some dogs. Ensure the crate is the right size and never use it as punishment. 7. Seek professional help: If these steps don't work, consult a professional dog trainer or behaviorist for personalized guidance. Remember, consistency and patience are key. It may take some time, but with the right approach, you can help your German Shepherd sleep through the night and ensure both of you get the rest you need.

      I understand that you're still deeply grieving the loss of your beloved German Shepherd, and it's perfectly normal to feel this way. Losing a pet, especially at such a young age, is incredibly painful. My purpose is to offer support and information, and I want to help you navigate this difficult time. Here are some things that might be helpful: Acknowledge your grief: Don't try to suppress your emotions. Give yourself permission to cry, scream, or whatever feels natural. Remember, there's no right or wrong way to grieve. Talk about your dog: Sharing memories and stories about him with friends, family, or even a therapist can be cathartic. Consider joining a pet loss support group online or in your community. Engage in activities you enjoy: Doing things you find pleasurable can help distract you from the pain and remind you of the joys in life. It doesn't mean you're forgetting your dog, just taking care of yourself. Remember the good times: Focus on the happy memories you shared with your dog. Create a photo album, scrapbook, or memorial to keep his spirit alive. Consider honoring his memory: Plant a tree, donate to a dog shelter, or volunteer in his name. Doing something meaningful in his memory can be a way to keep his spirit alive. Be patient with yourself: Healing takes time. There will be good days and bad days. Don't expect yourself to "get over it" quickly. Here are some resources that you might find helpful: The Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement: www.aplb.org/about-us/ Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice: www.lapoflove.com/ The Pet Loss Support Page: www.petloss.com/ The Humane Society of the United States: www.nehumanesociety.org/about-nhs/news-and-publications/dealing-with-pet-loss.html Remember, you're not alone in this. I think humans put too much stock in 'breeding for characteristics". Appearance yes, but mentality? Like, how?

    • @Pet-Code
      @Pet-Code 7 месяцев назад

      ou're absolutely right, the ethical considerations surrounding breeding for specific mental characteristics in humans are incredibly complex and raise serious concerns. Here are some of the key points to consider: Nature vs Nurture: Our understanding of the interplay between genetic predisposition and environmental factors in shaping human personality is still evolving. While genetics do play a role in temperament and certain personality traits, the environment we grow up in and the experiences we have throughout life have a profound impact on shaping who we become. Unforeseen consequences: Attempting to selectively breed for specific mental traits is fraught with uncertainty. Predicting the long-term consequences of such interventions is nearly impossible. Traits we deem desirable today might have unforeseen negative outcomes in future generations. Eugenics and discrimination: Historically, attempts to manipulate human populations through selective breeding have led to disastrous consequences like eugenics in the 20th century. We must learn from these dark chapters of history and avoid any practices that could lead to discrimination or the creation of an underclass based on perceived "undesirable" traits. Individuality and diversity: The beauty of humanity lies in our incredible diversity, both physically and mentally. Breeding for specific traits risks homogenizing the population and stifling the richness of human experience. We should celebrate individuality and embrace the full spectrum of human personalities and thought patterns. Alternatives to consider: Instead of attempting to manipulate human development at its core, we should focus on creating nurturing environments that foster the healthy development of all individuals, regardless of their genetic predispositions. Investing in education, social support systems, and mental health resources can have a far greater impact on shaping well-rounded individuals than any genetic manipulation could ever achieve. In conclusion, while breeding for specific mental characteristics in humans might seem enticing on the surface, the ethical concerns and potential dangers far outweigh any hypothetical benefits. We should instead focus on creating a world where all individuals, regardless of their genetic makeup, have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.

      when it comes to working dogs, it is very important to breed for specific character traits, especially those that make them effective in their lines of work. prey drive, resiliency to stress, certain levels of aggression, sharpness,health (hip/elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, etc.), all have a genetic component to them and thus need to be selectively bred in order to pass on the traits to future generations and also prevent other traits from being passed on. The GSD was created to be working dog but unfortunately popularity for the breed has caused over breeding, diluting the breed to what it is today with most being health ridden backyard bred dogs

    I lost my mixed cattle dog and chocolate lab of 15 years and it broke my heart. My daughter knows I love dogs and she felt I needed another dog in my life (my wife was against it) she attends the horse show in Thermal, CA every year where you find lots of loose dogs that are released by their owners. Unfortunately, there are kill shelters out there. My daughter found a black GSD running loose and they were able to capture him and bring him home. She had rescued a mixed Dutch Shepherd 2 years ago and to have too big a dogs in the house was a little difficult since she her and husband ride horses and are always at horse shows, so the plan was to give me the dog. I was very nervous about a GSD in our house since I had been exposed to some mean ones in my life. He was about a 1 and a half years old and I am 75 going on to be 76 years old. He pees in the house and tears up some pillows which my wife was not happy about I don’t tolerate behaviors like that so I started working on correcting the behavior and he is a well-behaved dog now. I take him to the dog park (no dogs around) I throw the ball for him and loves it, he is the most wonderful dog I have had and he is so cuddly and so caring and protective. I take him everywhere I go and he loves it, he is now socialized with people and I make certain he doesn't bark at dogs, what an incredible breed. I know he is my last dog because of my age and he has brought joy and love to my heart. All my misconceptions about the breed have gone out the window and I wish I had known then what I know now I would have had this breed sooner.

      It's wonderful to hear about the beautiful bond you've developed with your rescued German Shepherd! It's truly heartwarming to hear how he's brought joy and love back into your life after facing the heartbreak of losing your beloved dog. It's understandable that you had apprehensions about the breed initially, due to your past experiences with some aggressive GSDs. However, it's fantastic that you gave this dog a chance and have witnessed firsthand the incredible qualities that GSDs can possess. Your story highlights several key points: Rescue can be incredibly rewarding: Your daughter's rescue of the GSD not only saved his life from potentially ending in a kill shelter, but it also brought great joy and companionship to you and your family. Never judge a book by its cover: You initially had reservations about the breed based on past experiences, but you were open to giving this individual dog a chance to prove himself. This allowed you to discover his wonderful personality and loving nature. Age is just a number: At 75, you're showing that age shouldn't be a barrier to enjoying the companionship of a dog. Your dedication to training and socializing your GSD demonstrates that you're fully capable of providing him with a loving and responsible home. Every dog is an individual: Don't let the actions of a few define an entire breed. Your rescued GSD shows that each dog has its own unique personality and potential, regardless of breed stereotypes. It's clear that you and your GSD have formed a special connection. He brought joy and love back into your life at a time when you needed it most, and you, in turn, provided him with a safe and loving home. You're creating a beautiful story together, proving that rescue dogs and older companions can bring immense joy and fulfillment to our lives. I wish you many happy years filled with love, laughter, and adventures with your incredible GSD! Remember, he may be your last dog, but the impact he's made on your life will be forever cherished.

      You are right, King Shepherds are known for their large size. In fact, they are one of the largest dog breeds in the world. Males can typically reach heights of 27 to 31 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 90 and 150 pounds, while females are slightly smaller, standing 25 to 27 inches tall and weighing 75 to 110 pounds. Image of King Shepherd female dogOpens in a new window Their large size is due to their mixed ancestry, which often includes breeds like the German Shepherd, Malamute, and Great Pyrenees. This mix of genes gives them not only their impressive size but also their thick, double coat, which helps them to withstand cold weather. Despite their size, King Shepherds are known for being gentle and loving dogs. They are also very intelligent and trainable, making them good companions for both families and individuals. However, it is important to remember that they are still large dogs and require plenty of exercise and space to roam. If you are looking for a large, loyal, and loving dog, the King Shepherd may be the perfect breed for you. Just be sure to do your research and make sure you can provide them with the care and attention they need.

    I had a female american I got for my mom.She was supposed to be her owner but guess who she picked?This guy if he isn't a computer program has never owned a GSD. Mine didn't have a mean bone in her body got socialized and taken to the dog park regularly and was the best dog I ever owned. They are smart really smart so if you can't out think them you will be in trouble.The breed was bred for a host of jobs on a farm or in a home. Security, animal control, and even herding. (they are a shepherd) But they are also really really good at becoming a family member, pulling on heart strings, and having a lovable personality. That might be their best trick.

    • @Pet-Code
      @Pet-Code 7 месяцев назад

      It sounds like you had a wonderful experience with your German Shepherd dog! It's true that GSDs are incredibly special dogs, known for their intelligence, loyalty, and trainability. They can be fiercely protective of their families and make excellent working dogs, but they also have a deep capacity for love and affection. I can understand your frustration if someone who hasn't owned a GSD doesn't quite understand the unique bond you can have with one. These dogs are not simply pets; they become true companions and family members. Their intelligence means they require mental stimulation and training, but the rewards of that investment are immeasurable. It's clear you put a lot of effort into socializing and training your GSD, and that shines through in your description of her temperament. Taking them to the dog park regularly is a great way for them to interact with other dogs and learn proper social skills. It also sounds like you provided her with plenty of love and attention, which is essential for any dog but especially important for intelligent breeds like GSDs. I'm sure your mom was heartbroken when your dog chose another person as her primary companion, but sometimes these things happen. It's not a reflection on her ownership or love for the dog; it's simply a testament to the dog's own unique personality and bond. GSDs can be incredibly intuitive and sometimes choose their own person, regardless of who they spend the most time with. I'm glad you had such a positive experience with your GSD. They truly are remarkable dogs, and it sounds like you gave her a wonderful life. If you're ever considering getting another dog in the future, I would encourage you to look for another GSD. Just remember, they're a big commitment, but the love and loyalty they return are worth every bit of effort.

      My grandfather had one, he was called Wolf. He lived on a working farm and helped move the sheep around. He could not be left alone with them though as he had a strong predatory drive and would chase them and bite them. He was also my bodyguard and would have gotten himself killed for me.

      @yehmen29 Aww, wonderful 💖 We had one full blood, and I remember that when I took him for walks, people were stearing at him, especially men. My doggie was so sweet, but of course, a 110 lbs black GSD, so people and dogs always went to the other side of the sidewalk. My husband passed away six months ago 😢. One day before he went to heaven, he started bleeding, and I was going to dial 911 and I got so scared and worried 😟 our doggie went to get my phone and laid under my husband's legs. He wasn't trained for that. When my husband passed away, our dog couldn't take it, and he also passed away two weeks later. 😢 He was my husband's buddy, very concerned when he was going to sit on his wheelchair. I can just see our dog looking up for my husband. Everybody was afraid of him by just looking at him. His demeanor was very powerful. My husband found him on Craigslist, I'm so thankful with our dog because he helped to keep him alive. When my husband went to the hospital the last time, his dog stayed with him on the bed, looking at him, hoping that he was going to get better. My hunny and his doggie are together in heaven 💖 Thank you so much for sharing your story about your black GSD. German Shepherds are incredibly sensitive and intelligent.

    Both of my sons were police officers, 25yrs and 27yrs. My oldest son finally began a kennel where he bred and trained GSDs and the younger one worked with police and security dogs. Sadly, I lost both sons to brain cancer within 3 months last year. I miss the dogs, especially the puppies. Placing them afterwards broke my heart, but I made sure they went to owners who understood and loved the breed.

    I had KGSD. She was amazing and nothing like anything described here. She was calm, aloof, silly and charming. A cuddle bug and the most lovable dog ever ; at any given moment in the lap for a hug. She was raised by 2 doxie's and would hug them every morning with a gentle swipe of her paw into her large chest, with a kiss or two she was off to a great day (the doxie's tolerated the attention). She was a King German Shepherd and weighed in at 120 pounds. She went to the groomer one day and fell in love with a male GSD. It was love at 1st sight for them both. She was the best dog ever and because she was so incredibly special I could never bring myself to get another. However, there are several German Shepherd rescue centers and if you are considering getting a German Shepherd please consider a rescue center 1st. These are wonderful animals and they all deserve a great home and love if you can bring yourself to open your home and your heart to one.

      Totally agree about finding a rescue. I have 2 rescue GSDs and they're amazing dogs. They just needed training and patience to be the dogs they are now.

    I was hopingto hear more about the Belgium Shepherd. Are they are their own breed of Shepherd? Are they derived from one of the 5 others mentioned? Either way thank you, it was a great video.

      Belgian Shepherds and German Shepherds are actually distinct breeds with separate origins, although they share some superficial similarities in appearance and working ability. Belgian Shepherds: Four distinct varieties: Groenendael (black), Malinois ( fawn mahogany), Tervueren (fawn with black mask), and Laekenois (rough-haired fawn). Developed in Belgium in the 19th century as herding dogs for different types of livestock. Known for their intelligence, agility, and trainability, making them versatile working dogs used in various roles like sheep herding, police work, and search and rescue. German Shepherds: Developed in Germany in the late 19th century by Max von Stephanitz to create a versatile all-purpose herding dog. Originally known as the Deutscher Schäferhund, or "German Shepherd Dog." Also popular for their intelligence, trainability, and working ability, employed in diverse roles like herding, police work, military service, and disability assistance. While both breeds excel in herding and working tasks, they have distinct characteristics and histories. Belgian Shepherds come in four varieties, each with its own unique coat type and sometimes subtle differences in temperament. German Shepherds have a single coat type and a slightly larger build compared to some Belgian Shepherd varieties. So, while Belgian Shepherds and German Shepherds may share some common traits, they are separate breeds with their own unique heritages and characteristics. A complete video about Belgium Shepherd will be brought soon.🥰 thank you

    I'm 58 now, and I am not, regrettably, fit enough to bring a German Shepherd i to my life. Sad, but true.

      It's understandable that owning a German Shepherd requires physical activity. There are many other breeds and pets that might better suit your current lifestyle. Any specific questions or preferences you have in mind?

      You only get one life and unless you have some kind of handicap to prevent you from getting fit if so I’m sorry but if not don’t let nothing in this life stop you.

    Made it to the third 'thing not to do to your German Shepard', and I stopped. It goes for ALL dogs, not just GS. And I'm also pretty sure that's AI being used to narrate, which is also extremely annoying.

    MY puppy loves hugs. When giving the puppy hugs I stop and say 'hugs,,and hugs and hugs'. The puppy responds by leaning into me to continue.
