Chrysanthemums and Bamboo
Просмотров 116Месяц назад
I forgot to mention that if you deadhead the mums (remove spent blooms) they will bloom longer. I'm not removing mine because I want to see if these plants are sterile or fertile. I suspect sterile, but I want to see. Spring is the better time for planting hardy mums, but they're difficult to find for sale in my area in the spring. So I have to get them when I can.
Bamboo Rhizomes and Other Things in the Garden
Просмотров 72Месяц назад
The weather has been unbearable for the past month and a half. The heat index most days was near or over 100ºF. Some days it was 108 - 110ºF. Also, the bamboo activity is mostly underground this time of the year. So there isn't much to see going on. Other plants are showing their stuff at the moment. Now that the heat and humidity are beginning to subside I'm hoping to get more done in the gard...
Can I Garden Under Bamboo?
Просмотров 3333 месяца назад
Bamboo makes quite a dense shade and makes the ground underneath it very dry in most cases. Gardening under bamboo can work if you are careful about plant selection and are very observant about the natural cycles that play out in your garden throughout the year. Bamboo Rhizomes | When They Jump
Просмотров 2723 месяца назад
This is now summer and it is rhizome growing season. The roots of bamboo don't grow during the entire warm season. They have a period of a few weeks that they grow similar to how the shoots do in the springtime. It's common for rhizomes to jump and in this video we'll take a look at what do when you see a jumping rhizome.

My apologies for not showing actually placing the mole trap back in the ground. The rain we received last night has pretty much washed the runs back in and it's difficult to tell where to place the mole trap. It does go in the actual runs, not in the mole hills. You can place the mole trap in a run near a hill such as I did, but it does have to go in a run. I hope I explained the use and placem...
Single White and Red Flower Hybrid Hibiscus

This is another Hibiscus that was hybridized by my best friend. It is in chicken wire for its own protection since it is a very young plant. I'm liking the red starburst on this one very much! I can't believe how far to the ends of the petals it reaches! This cultivar is yet unnamed.

This incredible hybrid hibiscus is developing into a showstopper. Not only is the flower absolutely stunning, but the foliage is so shiny that it almost looks plastic! My best friend bred this cultivar and gifted it to me. While this one looks similar to Hibiscus 'Starblast' (not in the parentage) I believe the starburst reaches a bit further to the ends of the petals on this one I have.

    Just found your channel. Lots of info(and I subscribed to learn more). I'm looking at Bamboo , specifically Bisettii, as winter greens for my sheep. I'm in South Eastern BC, and our zone went from 6b to 7a in 2023. It can hit -25c(-17f) . Do you have other suggestions (running and clumping) that I could plant? Invasiveness isn't a concern, as I also raise pigs, and with them if it's edible its not invasive. Thx in advance

      Hi, P. atrovaginata and P. parvifolia have each been outperforming P. bissetii for me here for the past few winters since atrovaginata and parvifolia have been getting settled in. I believe clumpers, in the cold hardy genus Fargesia, would be out of the question for livestock food only because of the incredibly slow growth. P. rubromarginata spreads much faster than the other Phyllostachys species I’ve mentioned here. The drawback is that it’s not nearly as cold hardy and has top-killed all but one winter for me. Your minimum temperature of -25ºC (-13ºF) would leave you without green foliage for feed with rubromarginata. Between atrovaginata and parvifolia, atrovaginata is the faster grower. I’m happy you like the videos. Thank you for watching. :)

    Would you say that due to your cold climate that that is the thickest in diameter the combs will ever be?

    • @CountryWhatnotGardens
      @CountryWhatnotGardens 11 дней назад

      The grove should produce larger culms with maturity. This grove hasn't top killed for several winters now. Top damage and twig damage, but not top kill. Not losing energy reserves over winter goes a long way. Thank you for watching. :)

    • @CountryWhatnotGardens
      @CountryWhatnotGardens 19 дней назад

      I think P. parvifolia or P. atrovaginata might do better. They have been outperforming both P. bissetii and P. nuda for the past few winters since they have gotten more settled in. The key isn't so much protecting them from cold as it is protecting them from wind. The wind is what does more winter damage. If you have a good evergreen tree windbreak for the bamboo that would help a lot. Thank you for watching! :)

Reportedly this guy was in the area and my neighbor was notified. I didn't know any of this was going on until the next day when my neighbor told me, "I hope you don't mind, but last night I hid out in your bamboo for a while." (The grove nearest to his property) He told me why. I told him he could use the bamboo as much as he needed in such a case.

    This video is useful because I’m interested in using Bissetii to make a grove, but personally how fast does it spread based on your experience?

    • @CountryWhatnotGardens
      @CountryWhatnotGardens Месяц назад

      P. bissetii does spread, but it's not the fastest in the genus. It will vary under different growing conditions too. Bamboo, no matter which one, will take 2-3 years to establish a root system. During which time it will appear to be doing nearly nothing above ground. After that it will slowly gain speed. The grove in this video was planted as one plant in 2000 and would be larger if I hadn't contained it by mowing the perimeter. I got the plant in 1997 and moved it to this location in 2000.

      'Rufa' is the only Fargesia that I've gotten to live through hot summers, but it's certainly not a hedge. Eight years in and it's still under 3' in height. A root barrier and a Phyllostachys species might be a better bet for a hedge depending on your situation.

    I have one of the Nash traps and it's like setting a bear trap. Unfortunately, our soil is too rocky to use them. It's nearly impossible to get those loops down far enough so the trigger is over the run. I have probably 5 other kinds of traps and have only caught moles with the Victor spike traps. Now in August with little rain our soil is hard and can't even get those in the ground so just bought several barrel traps and have them out. Waiting to see how they work. I've tried the Cinch traps and Trapline traps with no success as well.

      It doesn't happen often, but once in a while a few here or there will. They each had some type of damage and discoloration at the site of the break. No telling what it was. A few culms out of an entire grove isn't bad. Late freezes at the wrong stage in shoot growth can damage them for later too.
