    Could I covert an x100f? Any idea how much that would cost?

    • @robshea
      @robshea День назад

      You can convert an X100F. The cost is around 250-300 USD. Since this is a fixed lens camera, you will not be able to change lenses to deal with hot spots. However, the hot spots produced by these lenses are relatively mild and correctable. I converted an X70 which produces mild hot posts. I've created two radial filters in LRC to fix, added them to a preset, and then apply that preset when importing images. You can get more examples here: 127.0.0.1:4001/infrared-lenses-fujifilm-x/#compact-cameras-with-prime-lenses

    Is there a benefit to using a drop in or flange filter over the one on the end of the lens with respect to reflections or flare? I would think having the filter closer to the sensor would possibly reduce those negative effects.. but not sure…

    • @robshea
      @robshea 2 дня назад

      There might be a slight benefit, but only over using circular filters with multiple step-up rings that move the filter away from the front of the lens. I have seen artifacts when using many step-up rings. However, I've not seen any issues when using a circular filter directly on the lens.

    Hi Rob. When I first loaded the colour swap profiles I was finding when white balancing, the white balance was invariably right on the 2000K end with the pic still looking a touch cool, so not getting enough adjustment (albeit fairly close). I've found that if I create the profile within CameraRaw and at this point set it include the camera profile under the various 'Current image settings to include' options (having loaded the -50 or -100 version as apt under the adjustment settings before creating the profile), and of course setting the desired .cube file at the bottom of the create profile options. Then obviously create the rest of profiles from the apt camera profile/.cube file combos. This seems to give the right end result i.e. RAW files that white balance with adjustment to spare, but is this the correct way to create the colour swap profiles? Just want to be sure I'm not missing something!

    Hello Mr. Shea, I had some help in selecting the camera profile to use in LR. However, making or using LUTS might be a bit much for me at this stage. What would I be missing if I didn't use LUTS and just went into PS and made the color swaps instead? What per cent of possibilities would I be sacrificing? Thank you.

      You have a variety of options, which will all produce similar results, but with different levels of effort in your workflow. - You can purchase the Lightroom Infrared Color Swap Profiles and you won't need to create the profiles. This allows you to stay in Lightroom. 590.red/lr-ir-color-swap - You can use the Photoshop Action for Infrared. They require a trip to PS, but save time once you are there. 590.red/infrared-actions3 - You can create your own color swaps in PS using adjustment layers.

      - Ensure that you are viewing a raw or DNG file. - Ensure you have selected an image shot with the same model camera as the profile. Profiles are unique to each camera model. Even a “Mark II” camera is considered a different model camera. - Ensure that you have closed and restarted Lightroom. New profiles are only loaded when the program is started.

However if I first open the image in Lightroom then bring it over to Photoshop to perform the channel swap, the foliage is a light pink. Any particular reason for this?

    • @robshea
      @robshea 14 дней назад

      It will depend on whether you set a white balance before making the color swap. In CR, you should be setting a white balance before, opening in PS. When moving from LR to PS, the image is converted to a PSD or TIFF and no longer has the raw controls for white balance, so you should also set a white balance first.

Dragging over the names of things, i.e., CONTRAST, instead of tying to hit the tiny buttons would also be another improvement. I can only assume Adobe has a copyright on such things. Thanks for your tutorial Rob. Do you think that you could have achieve the same end result with a "normal" photograph; ie not an infrared one. Is there anything that the infrared adds to your black and white result? The image seems a bit noisy. Is that because it is an infrared photo? Thanks again.

    • @robshea
      @robshea 25 дней назад

      In an image such as this, the main benefit of infrared will be in the clouds. The sky will be darker and the clouds more defined. In an image with foliage, it would be white. The noise is a result of shooting at ISO 1600. I could have (and should have) used a lower ISO, since I had plenty of shutter speed to spare (1/2500s). Since this was shot, I've also been using enhanced noise reduction to great effect and would do so on an image like this.

      For IR filters between 515 and 720nm, the biggest difference is color saturation. Lower numbered filters have more color saturation, higher numbered filters have less. When using the White (preset in ON1, profile in LR), the filter impacts the color saturation in the sky.

    So maybe I can find some help here: I just recently picked up IR Photography with my dads old LUMIX camera. I am trying to edit just like it's told in the video, but AF seems to not identify the blue sky on the RAW images I try to work on. I am using an old Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5, with the 720 filter by Hoya.

      You could turn up the ISO to focus and then turn back down for the shot. You could try manual focus. If your camera supports it, I recommend peak focusing with the peak color set to blue. This makes manual focus a breeze.

      @@robshea Thank you very much, that helped me out quite a lot. I am trying to get deeper into the topic, but feel like I already reached the limitations of my old Lumix. Theres quite some pixelation happening. Highly appreciated!

    I have the GFX100ii with the Kolari IR chrome 82mm lens. any photos I take look nothing like any of this, they are all just a gross blue hue. everything MUST be edited so not sure why your saying "in camera".

      The IR Chrome filter requires a full spectrum converted camera. If all you are seeing is blue, it could be that you are using this filter on an unconverted camera.

      laugh it up lol. There’s shockingly little information about “conversion” in the sale of 90% of products sold for converted cameras 🤷 but you’ve probably never made a mistake like that in your life huh 🥱

    This is not working at all for me, I used a Kolari IR filter, so everything started out blue for me and when I selected the first step (picking white) everything changed to looking fairly normal.

      As mentioned above the Kolari IR Chrome filter. Aparently your supposed to set the white balance in camera to see the affect vs post editing but no clue how to do that and there is very little information online that can help walk someone through it step by step.

      @@SDA-Sound Kolari sells many filters. For IR Chrome, if you are shooting JPEG, you must set a WB in-camera with the filter on in the lighting conditions you will be shooting. If you are shooting in raw, setting the WB in-camera gives you a good preview of your image but is not required, since you can always set a good WB while editing.

    What about ccd vs cmos?

    • @robshea
      @robshea Месяц назад

      One of the key differences between CCD and CMOS is how they handle noise in low light. Since most infrared is shot in direct sunlight, noise is not usually much of a factor. They should be similar under these conditions.

    Hi Rob, I am hoping that you'll get to see this message even though this is an over 4 year old video. It appears that Adobe DNG Profile Editor no longer works on the latest OS on MAC-OSX. I was reading that they want us to use Adobe Profiles SDK instead. I have been having difficulty understanding what they are telling us to do. Have you had any success in using the SDK? I was looking through your videos to see if you've updated anything because of it, but haven't noticed anything. Thanks for everything you do to forward the IR world. Regards Colin.

      I’ve created a free collection of dcp profiles for hundreds of cameras so that you do not need to use the DNG Profile Editor to set a good white balance. You can get details at 590.red/infrared-profile-pack I have used the SDK for color swapping. You can get more details here 590.red/lr-ir-color-swap

      @@robshea Thanks Rob. I've noticed that now. It is installed for my Pen-F, but didn't seem to behave the same on the iPad as it did on my MacBook Pro. I'll have to experiment a little more with that. Somewhere I built my own profile, but I can't seem to find it since changing computers.
