Felling Two Dead Oak Trees by the Road - Firewood Farrago
Просмотров 184День назад
This video shows me taking down two oak trees. One was somewhat of a hazard to the road and both were fire risk mitigation targets. The chain was acting dull on the first tree and thus cutting rather slowly. I was using a new chain on the second tree, so the bogging there is likely poor technique or I should have just used a bigger saw. 0:55 first tree notch cutting 3:15 first tree notch clean ...

Off-Grid Bathroom Building Shower House Main Construction
Просмотров 15821 день назад
This video shows the main construction for an off-grid bathroom and shower house. I didn't go for a septic system for several reasons, it would have been difficult to incorporate into the site and it's probably supposed to be permitted. It just wasn't a requirement for me, so I wasn't looking for extra work/expense and wasn't excited to spend somewhat limited water on a flushing toilet. There's...

Grey Kittens Update - Kitty Cat Crusty Eye Issue
Просмотров 2094 месяца назад
One of the kittens born in my yard seemed to be having some eye issues. The mother cat was getting pretty violent on my approaches, but I was finally able to get a hold of the kitten using a food distraction, probably also aided by the kitten's lack of vision. I used a wet cloth to wipe at the eyes to soften and remove the crust and then spread the eyes open. From what I read, eye infections an...
Vegetable Garden Pest Cabbage Worm Moth Kale Crunchers
Просмотров 505 месяцев назад
This video shows a caterpillar infestation in my kale garden bed. I have since determined that are mostly likely called "cabbage worms." I went through and picked off as many as I could find and got enough to cover the bottom of a small plastic sour cream container. Too bad I don't currently have an aquarium setup because I bet fish would gobble them up.

Garden Cattle Panel Arbor - Raised Bed Trellis Fencing Espalier
Просмотров 2325 месяцев назад
This video shows how I used a cattle fencing panel in my garden. They come in 16 feet long sections so getting them transported may be the hardest part. I tied it into a loop and it fit in my long bed easily. Some of the length is underground, but I still cut off a couple squares to reduce the height of the trellis which also improved the rigidity a bit. There's two grape vines in one bed and t...
There Are Kittens in the Kitty Cat Shelter I Built

Hummingbird Inspecting Flowers in the Garden - Bird Watching
Google fasciated dandelion. Apparently not rare.
Interesting
I have seen something similar to this once years ago in Tolono
Too much miracle grow
Cool to see the property before the fire.
I bought this exact raised bed container. You definitely need to remove the plastic otherwise the sun is going to deteriorate the film and then you will have flaking plastic all over your garden. I hand tightened the nuts and bolts and then went back with a wrench and 1/2” impact drill to complete the assembly. Once assembled it weighs about 35 pounds. I bought mine through a big box store and had it delivered to my house. Very pleased with the final results. It will take a couple of hours to put it together though.
Lil clump o lawn
I have the same machine. Works great. Only downside the pull start takes a lot of strength. It's very hard to pull.
Aha in the house now!
Just for a minute which was useful since that's where the sink is and I needed to re-wet the cloth a couple times. I don't think the mother cat would have stood for me doing it in front of her either. The kitten was pretty peaceful for the procedure though.
Get some thuricide. I've used it before years ago. I've also picked a lot of worms out of broccoli.
From what I read, they're not too picky about which brassica they chomp upon.
Thank you for being smart and not jamming your hand down in the chipper.. I've seen to many videos and they do just that.. I like how your dropping the branch and allowing the gravity to grabb it. Thumbs 👍🏻
Yeah, I have a lifelong goal of keeping all my digits and limbs intact🙂. Usually, if something doesn't want to feed you can kind of poke it through with the next stick without sticking your hand down the chute. Also, the more you can cut down any Ys in your branches the easier they will feed. Thanks for the comment.

What do the caterpillars taste like?
I didn't try one, out of sour cream.

Is that the 224cc? I thought the top hopper was shorter vs the 336 which that looks like.
yep 224cc
so tiny <3
❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
I have a DR power chipper that is very similar. I dump the chips back into the top hopper and get an even finer material that looks better in the flow beds and decomposes faster providing rich soil. My soil has gone from hard compacted clay to black crumply soil in seven years of continuously adding organics material from the chipper shredder.
Thank you sir, I also built 9 raised garden beds with concrete blocks--EXPENSIVE cedar only lasts 5-6 years--total waste of money.
Thank you for doing this video. I just purchased 6 myself. I was wondering if they come with any internal supports to keep them from sagging, but it doesn’t look like it. I might have to rig something up. This is the only vid I’ve found so far that addresses this particular brand. Quite a cost savings compared to others. Hoping they hold up as well. But for half the price of some of them, even if they last half as long, I’m still good. Again, thank you. Happy gardening.
No, it didn't come with any internal supports. There is a touch of flex, but so far, any bowing out of the sides has been really minimal even in 2x8 configuration. It probably helps that I did dig down a little bit so that the bottom of the bed is slightly underground and held fast that way, not just sitting on the surface. Thanks for the nice feedback.
There's a video called "How to FIX and STOP a Raised Garden Bed From Caving Inwards" which is worth watching regarding internal supports.
There's probably a way to use a wheelbarrow (with a screen on top); dryer/dust collector hose; HVAC boot; and some nuts/bolts to make collecting all of the output easier.
That sounds a little bit less than easy, but it's an interesting idea. It would be nice to have an alternative to the bag which is already developing some holes after only maybe 10 hours of use...
Early vid from the property 👍
'promosm' 😭
I bought one like that several months ago. I had the same problem you do with the bends in the sticks. I can understand that. My chipper chute was only about 2 1/2 inches where the 2 pieces are welded together. Called them and they sent me anther chute but the bolt holes were too small and I had to drill them out. That new chute was only about another tenth of an inch larger. I have a spray paint can that is just over 2 1/2 inches in diameter and use it to guage the hole and it will not pass the welded part. If you et a chance measure your chute and see if it is actually 3 inches all the way or if it is less near the welded part. What I do not like about the chute is while the limbs i have are only about 2 1/2 inches I have to be real careful to cut the side limbs off the main limb or they get hung up and will not go through the chipper even tho9ugh they are less than 3 inches.
I haven't done a deep dive (just eyeballing it with a tape measure), but the *outside* diameter of the chipper feed chute appears no more than 3". I'm guessing if I removed it, I would see the same numbers as you are describing.
Can I get an estimate of how much concrete blocks you used or maybe a blueprint of your 3 compartment compost bin, thank you
I've added another video with such additional details. Hope it helps. ruclips.net/video/xBQrhXV7atg/видео.html
Awww yea boiii
I aspire to be you one day
It's good to have goals, but that one may not be achievable. 🙂 Live your best life, my friend.
A good tool to add is a reciprocating saw to get under to cut the roots especially when there is no room to swing an axe. best tool I bought for the job.
Thanks for the comment, I can see that working well in some situations. I did actually try this first on some other stumps, but didn't have as much success as I've seen in other videos. At least it was no substitute for extensive digging. The ground is pretty rocky so I was going through blades pretty fast. I reverted back to the axe which still severs roots pretty quickly and is relatively easy to sharpen back into a working edge.
man. this person digs fast! lol. Looks like it went fairly well. If you have one available, a tire on a wheel rim - under that chain will lift up instead of just to the side.
Great demo. less talking and more doing is how it should be done. Appreciate the post.
Thanks for the nice feedback!
Trees are nice, but not always.
Why would anyone build a shed enclosing a stump?
Perhaps you are mistaking a fence for a shed. Otherwise, I don't know either.
First error is that you cut the tree TOO CLOSE TO THE GROUND...... if the stump was 4 foot tall you would have pulled it out right soon
I agree that a taller stump will give more leverage for pulling it over, as can be seen in this other video of mine ruclips.net/video/mLu_oIWJJyk/видео.html. Above where this stump was cut off was not so much trunk as widely splaying branches, so that's why reality unfolded as it did. I tried to leave something for a chain to get purchase on at least.
Good for using the jack that way but... First, you should jack it UP and out. Lift it up and out and not against the ground on the side. They come out _much_ easier. Second, quick links are NOT rated for anywhere near what you think. Be very, very careful when using them. They are junk. But... it's out. That's what matters.
Perhaps you should have been there doing it so it would be done right.
@@rodm5830 you're right. I should have...
I agree that the quick links are the weak point in the system. Presuming the ratings stated on packages are accurate, a zinc 5/16" quicklink is 1500 lbs (higher for stainless or 3/8"). I would be interested to hear any proposed stronger attachment method.
Hmmm, what about the case of only one stump ? How to anchor in that case ?
A truck is basically a movable anchor if you can't find anything else suitable.
@@independentnature295 Bingo
Thank you for this handy guide to getting teenagers out of bed in the morning
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Hehe, Good one
Turn the machine with inlet close to your stockpile and save on walking around the shredder...
Makes sense, I just had the more interesting side of the chipper toward the camera for the video. Thanks
My neighboor used a bautri-system for stump removal.
I'm not sure what that means.
Thanks for sharing your video. I am thinking to buy farm jack 33in 3ton only 99 dollor . Is it enough to remove root tree like yours? what brand fram jack do you use? Thanks
Mine is a Hi-Lift HL-484, but I don't think there is all that much difference between brands. A 48 inch model will give you quite a bit more travel which comes in handy for taking up slack and overall pull length when using it as a winch. I think Harbor Freight has a Badlands 48" model for about that price, which you may or may not want to consider. Capacity will be enough to be helpful, just don't imagine that you're going to avoid having to excavate and sever big roots. If you're putting a lot of effort into the jack and the stump isn't moving, there is good possibility you can break the shear pin.
@@independentnature295 I have just removed a large fir tree and the root this past weekend. It was around 18 inches wide near the base of the tree. I used to work felling trees many years ago. When you are removing big roots you can clean up the soil from the root with an axe and then carefully saw parts of the roots off with a chain saw. When I had got rid of the roots at the sides, I used a farm jack underneath the root, stood on a piece of wood to stop it sinking into the ground. The hardest part is getting the Jack in a position where you can use the lever in the hole to jack it up. The Jack needs to be slanted a bit to push the main part of the root over to break the tap root off. If you know you are going to take the root out before you fell a tree, it is always better to leave the stump as high as possible to get more leverage.
@@feesimple388 I think stumps are ultimately a little weaker to upwards forces than lateral forces since they regularly experience and resist lateral forces while growing. Running the chain over a tire is another way to get more of an upward force from a lateral pull. Thanks for your comment!
I would just buy a 5ton chain hoist...
I am so happy to see I am not the only one that think these suck! My favorite can ever was METAL, round, 6 gallon, and short enough to be stable in a pickup bed.
The plastic ones from 15-20 years with flexi-plastic spout and second capped air hole worked well and to my memory seem like they were relatively cheaper. The manufacturers are probably disinclined to complain about regulations too much because it's their justification for charging a lot more.
We have 4 of them. They are junk. They spill more gas than any other gas container in the past. They sell more gas this way. Whatever happened to the metal 1 gallon rectangle shaped can with the rubber tube spout that you could flex as needed?? Those worked great.
Can we have a class action lawsuit against the law firms who filed the lawsuits that caused this idiocy?
I despise those types of gas cans.
Gorilla Evolution cart. Same size. Better quality and much cheaper.
Interesting, I do have a smaller gorilla cart and like the build quality, but hadn't seen one as big as the rubbermaid. One other thing I like about the rubbermaid cart is the large wide flat bottom where the gorilla's are more oddly sculpted (to accommodate the steel rails.)
@@independentnature295 Hey thanks! Could I fit 4 regular filled trash bags in this?
@@ThePalePatriot Trash bags come in a lot of sizes, so it's hard to know what you consider regular. I'd be inclined to say yes for all but the largest contractor yard bags. In this other video I mix some potting soil in the cart which might provide more perspective on its size. ruclips.net/video/D7ujqXjNHW0/видео.html
Leave it alone.
That's been my philosophy and intention. Though longer term I don't want to foster an unnecessarily dangerous situation through complacency either.
This is exactly what I am trying to build. I love how you latched the top of the wood panels to the blocks.
Thanks, it has been working out so far. If you're going to try to duplicate the 3 bay shape, really think about the layering of blocks as it seemed impossible to have 2 layers that didn't have a vertical seam going through both in some places. I think I wound up with 3 different layer patterns each used twice for a 6 layer high wall.
@@independentnature295 Great tips, thank you.
I've added another video with additional details. Hope it helps. ruclips.net/video/xBQrhXV7atg/видео.html
How did you keep the rats out
I lay some heavy steel corrugated sheeting across the top weighed down with cinder blocks when I want to restrict the top, but that is more aimed at raccoons and probably isn't rat proof. Sometimes I see minor signs of animal activity, but otherwise it hasn't reached a point of annoyance to action. I'm less worried about a rat sneaking around the compost pile than trying to live under shipping containers or other structures, for which I have had good results with the Tomcat rat snap traps.
This may be too scary for your mom
