We want to wish the National Park Service a happy 108th birthday 🎂🎂🎂
We got to share Congaree National Park with some great folks today from Colorado and the Ukraine! We heard several Barred Owls 🦉 thru out the day and guide Meghan finally spotted 1 at Big Snake Slough. We also had a couple Common Brown Water Snakes 🐍 and nice sized Fishing Spiders 🕷️.

It was another beautiful day on Cedar Creek in Congaree National Park! The Barred Owls 🦉 are still proving elusive as we heard a few call out but they were off the creek. We did have a flock of Juvenile White Ibis leading us down between Tupelo Basin and Big Snake Slough. We also spotted a couple big Common Brown Water Snakes 🐍 as well. The beautiful weather continues! We welcomed a wonderful couple from Florida today. We spotted a few Common Brown Water Snakes 🐍 and a very speedy Water Moccasin. Heard several Red Shouldered Hawks and spotted a Pileated Woodpecker. Had an Anhinga flying ahead of us near Tupelo Basin. The great weather continued today! But the best part of the day was when the ACE crew pulled up to clear our fallen tree! They weren't quite finished when we came back so still had to portage both ways. Heard a few Barred Owls 🦉 it didn't spot any. It was pleasantly cool this morning for our kayaking trip on Cedar Creek. That didn't stop the mosquitoes from trying to make friends with us! It was a nice day in Congaree National Park and we had Cedar Creek all to ourselves. We paddled into Big Snake Slough for a bit. We spotted 2 Common Brown Water Snakes 🐍 on the way back and had a Great Blue Heron in Lake Dawson. The Heron was playing "leapfrog" with a Belted Kingfisher as we came back. We had Cedar Creek to ourselves for much of the morning. Guide Addie spotted a Barred Owl 🦉 in Lake Dawson and then a couple Common Brown Water Snakes 🐍 in the lake as well. Cedar Creek is almost back down to normal level following TS Debby. It was high enough that we could paddle in Big Snake Slough and get pretty far back. It was a spider-rific day on Cedar Creek in Congaree National Park! (Sorry Daisy!) We had a great family from the United Kingdom, a traveler from Maryland and a local! We had a great family from North Carolina (via Ohio & Alabama) out with us on Cedar Creek today. They spotted a few Barred Owls 🦉 near the landing and we would spot another 3 while on the creek. After not seeing any Barred Owls 🦉 yesterday, we saw 3 this morning within the first 20 mins. Spotted a 4th further downstream as well. Had a few Red Pileated Woodpeckers flying about and a very vocal Red Shouldered Hawk on the way back up. Only 1 Water Snake 🐍 out today but she was a biggun! A warm and muggy but overcast day on Cedar Creek in Congaree National Park. Creek levels are dropping below flood stage which is good. We paddled into Tupelo Basin for a bit and heard some Barred Owls 🦉 calling out. We did have a Blue Heron for a moment before it flew off. Cedar Creek has crested and started to drop. We were just below 10 ft today. We paddled both upstream and downstream today. Spent some time in a small Basin and Muck Swamp. We did spot 1 large female Common Brown Water Snake 🐍 getting some sun on a branch. But the most common thing we see when the water is up is spiders! And we saw plenty! We had a few Barred Owls 🦉 calling out at the landing this morning and spotted 1 flying thru the trees further down. Cedar Creek was up above 9.5 ft today and we managed to get a bit further down steam and paddled in Tupelo Basin for a few moments. The mist on the creek this morning was something special. We were the only company in the Park today and got a chance to see what TS Debby had done. We do have a couple new tree falls along the creek which caused us to cut our trip a little short. But we still had a very enjoyable paddle with a great family from Pennsylvania! We heard a few Barred Owls 🦉 calling out and a Red Pileated Woodpecker.
